Though the victims had all been asleep when they were killed, the weapon use was clearly the axe. This was particularly puzzling because Agent Leeds was locked inside his car, where there was obviously no room to swing the weapon! Doggett later identified a weapon that would have left the wounds they found in all the victims: a "ceremonial axe used over a thousand years ago to cleave the skulls of unbelievers." Unfortunately, that axe was on "permanent display in a Calcutta museum."

Agent Leeds was found in his car, where he'd fallen asleep, but they couldn't locate his partner, Agent Stedman. Doggett thought to check the condo Stedman kept in the city, and when they did, they found him dead in his bed.

The homeless man was asking Tipet for change, and Tipet said this to frighten him off so he could call Andre. Later, when the homeless man again encountered Tipet, he imagined himself getting stuck in wet concrete so he couldn't struggle as Tipet used the axe to cleave his skull.

Following the lead from the pay phone records, Doggett and Skinner went to Andre's lab at 4:54 am. Andre let the men in, and when Doggett asked if he was always up at that hour, he replied, "It's when I dissect my rats. Neighbors can't hear 'em screaming." The agents didn't reply, so Andre was compelled to explain that it was a joke, but it didn't make the agents any more amiable.

He dreamt he was walking down a hall in the police station where Andre was being held and he came face to face with Tipet. Doggett saw that he was creating bloody footprints on the floor, and when he looked down, he saw that he was holding Scully's bloody, severed head. Just then, Skinner woke him to take a call from Scully.

After that dream, Doggett started to realize that Tipet was somehow invading people's subconscious minds while they slept and killing them.

Andre dreamt he awoke in his cell and stood to find Tipet outside. Then a huge swarm of rats ran into the cell as Andre fell to the floor. The horde of rats covered Andre's body, biting at his exposed skin. Meanwhile, Doggett was starting to question things and went with Skinner to check on Andre.

By the time the agents got into the cell, though, Andre was dead, covered in tiny bite marks, but positioned on the cot as though he'd simply fallen asleep.

Thinking Tipet would be looking to replenish his drug supply, Doggett and Skinner went back to Andre's lab. Sure enough, Tipet was there, and as the agents watched, he lowered his head onto a spinning table saw.

Doggett dreamt he awoke and went to work, but was unsure if he was actually awake or not. He made his way to Skinner's office, where he confessed, almost in tears, "I'm not sure... I'm awake." Doggett realized that Tipet's other victims must have experienced the same surreal dream-state before they were killed and was clearly frightened that he would soon face the same fate. Out in the hallway, Doggett found Tipet, who told him Scully was going to die. Doggett replied, "I'm not going to let you do that." Tipet ominously informed him, "I'm sorry. I'm not going to kill her. You are." Then Doggett found himself in Scully's apartment, weapon in hand.

In his dream, Tipet was impelling Doggett to kill Scully as she slept in her bed. Doggett seemed about to do the deed when he lowered the axe and rotated the blade. He swung the axe upward toward his own forehead, and just before he made impact, Scully shook him awake. Doggett, clearly shaken from the dream and what he believed it to have meant, told Scully thankfully, "You just saved my life, Agent Scully." Looking somewhat uncomfortable in the face of his appreciation, Scully replied, "I just woke you up, Agent Doggett."

Scully told Doggett that on her way over to his house, Skinner had called to tell her that Tipet had died in the hospital. Apparently, he'd never regained consciousness. Of course, Doggett was only more disturbed by the thought that the violent dream he had just woken from had stemmed from something within himself rather than with Tipet!
