Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following are you required to have, in order to go on hunting missions?

Answer: Tags

The state of Alaska, through its Department of Fish and Game, offers the Basic Hunter Education course, which trains prospective hunters in vital safety procedures and conservation rules. The course is required for hunters 16 years of age or older. For those under 16, they must go hunting with a person who has completed the course.

2. In the cabin shop, there is an onscreen list of places where you can go to hunt. What is the first one on the list?

Answer: The North Slope

The North Slope is a region of Alaska comprised of 89,000 square miles of land. It borders on the Arctic Ocean. The area is home to about 7,400 people. Among the towns of the North Slope is Barrow, the northernmost in the United States.
3. What kind of fishing is not available in the game?

Answer: Net fishing

Ice fishing is highly popular in the northern and Midwestern United States and Canada. A saying among ice fishing enthusiasts is that "no ice is safe." Participants carry gear including augers and picks, among other items, to help them cut through the ice and create fishing holes--as well as provide grips in case someone falls in the water.
4. What is the goal in the North Slope hunt?

Answer: Two musk ox

The musk ox, Ovibos moschatus, is a formidable animal. Individuals can weigh between 440 and 880 pounds. Its wool, called 'qiviut,' can be harvested and used in knitting.
5. What do you see playing in the snow at the North Slope?

Answer: Bear cubs

The bears you see in this game are Ursus arctos, the brown bear. They can weigh anywhere from 300 to 1,500 pounds. In the Koyukon Native Alaskan culture, bears are known by the nicknames, among others, "Dark Thing" and "That Which Went Away."
6. How many species of fish are available in the game?

Answer: 10

One of the species you can catch in the game is the sockeye salmon, Onchorhynchus nerka. It has undergone severe depletion of stock in some areas of the United States. This quiz was written in October, 2007. At the time, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the sockeye in the Ozette Lake water system in the state Washington were considered endangered, and those in the Snake River, Idaho region were of threatened status. Conditions are somewhat better in Alaska, where the state maintains eighteen hatcheries in an effort to replenish stocks.

7. When you zoom in on a game animal, what information appears above the target?

Answer: How many yards away it is

If the animals hear you before you have a chance to open fire, they will run away. Alternately, they may turn and charge you. The game is realistic in that it involves a great deal of hiking, searching the environment for animal tracks, and waiting for the quarry to emerge from cover.
8. To how many regions of Alaska can you travel in the game?

Answer: 12

Alaska was the 49th state admitted to the United States. Its motto is "North to the Future."
9. What item do you carry to restore your health?

Answer: A medical kit

A medical set resembles a small backpack and is available at the Outpost building. Energy drinks and iodine do not exist in the game. Beef jerky does, however, and it has restorative powers similar to that of the health kit.
10. The dogsled race is an enjoyable part of the game. Which of the following can happen if you are not careful?

Answer: The sled may be destroyed

Dogsledding was a demonstration event at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Dogsled races held in Alaska include the Iditarod, the Cantwell Classic, the Klondike 300 and the Kobuk 440, among many others.
