Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many different ways (cards) to enter the Party Cube are available upon first loading the game?

Answer: Six

When the player first selects a game file and enters the main menu screen, six cards appear from a magical envelope before the Party Cube. These represent the six major modes of play in "Mario Party 4":
Party Mode- the main multiplayer area of the game, containing the classic board game square-off between four characters. Of course, you can also play a one-player game with three computer players, but that's not very much fun.
Story Mode- the game's one-player mode. Pick a character and difficulty level, then try to defeat each board to win special birthday presents.
Mini-Game Mode- Here, you can play any mini-game you've previously played in Party or Story Mode. Players can even play special battle and tic-tac-toe modes to spice things up a bit.
Option Room- Set the game options, listen to music/sounds, and view records here.
Present Room- Here, you can view the presents you've unlocked in Story Mode. There is one room for each character, and a mini-games room.
Extra Room- Thwomp and Whomp prepared a few additional cool boards and mini-games to play here.
2. Which of these is NOT a 2 vs. 2 mini-game?

Answer: "Toad's Quick Draw"

"Toad's Quick Draw" is a 4-player mini-game. Each player is given a sniper, and a variety of colored balloons appear out of a train. When Toad holds up a colored flag, players must be the first to shoot that color balloon. The first player to shoot three correct balloons wins.
"Order Up" is a 2 vs. 2 mini-game set in a fast-food restaurant. Each team of two has a table full of various food items. After the food is boxed and spun around, Toad calls for two different food items. The first team to find them on their table wins the round, and the first team to win three rounds wins the mini-game.
"Revers-a-Bomb" involves two teams, each given a set of six "redirecting" buttons, and six Bob-ombs. Bob-ombs will walk in one direction, until a player presses a redirecting button to send the Bob-omb in the other direction. If a Bob-omb reaches the player, it explodes, the player is stunned for a few seconds, and the team loses a life. The first team to lose all ten lives loses, and the other team wins.
In "The Great Deflate" teams race to be the first to completely deflate a huge inflatable Thwomp, using Ground Pounds. This game is pretty self-explanatory; the first team to deflate their Thwomp wins.
3. In "Dungeon Duos" how many different obstacles does each team have to clear (count the lowering walls as one, and each spinning platform/pipe zone as one)?

Answer: Six

"Dungeon Duos" is a 2 vs. 2 mini-game, and probably the most effort Nintendo's ever put into a mini-game thus far. The first team to clear the various obstacles and exit the cavern wins.
The first obstacle the players reach is a series of Whomp-looking walls blocking the path. One player must use the switch to lower the wall for the other, then the other player lowers the wall for the first player. Each player will cross a total of two walls.
Next, players encounter rotating platforms to aid in crossing a bottomless pit. These platforms remain motionless until a player presses the switch before or after the pit. One player rotates the platform while the other player jumps across, and vice versa. There are a total of two platforms: the first has two "carriages", while the second only has one.
The next obstacle is a pipe puzzle, where players repeatedly jump into a series of green pipes to attempt to find the correct pipe, leading to the next area. Players must clear two pipe rooms to reach the last room of the mini-game.
In the final room, teams must work together to inflate a large hot-air balloon they can use to exit the cavern, and win. A la "Balloon Burst" from the first "Mario Party", a steady pace of pumping is the key.
4. Which of these Story mini-games is incorrectly matched with its board?

Answer: Bowser's Gnarly Party- "Bowser Bop"

"Bowser Bop" is the Story mini-game for Toad's Midway Madness. The game is set in a bedroom, where Koopa Kid, and occasionally Bowser, heads pop out from various locations. The player must use a large mallet and whack more heads than Toad to win the game. Koopa Kid heads are worth one point, while Bowser heads are worth two points.
"Goomba's Chip Flip" (Goomba's Greedy Gala) sees the player engaged in a luck battle with the always-gambling Goomba. Ground pounding on chips may either give or deduct points, of varying values. After the player and Goomba each have five chips, the player with the higher overall total wins.
"Archaeloguess" (Shy Guy's Jungle Jam) takes place in an underground cavern containing images of Shy Guys, and five switches. In each round, a shape appears above each switch. It is up to the player to find which shape is different and Ground Pound on that switch. Whoever finds the correct shape three times first (Shy Guy or the player) wins.
"Mystic Match 'Em" (Boo's Haunted Bash) is an ominous card game invented by Boo. The player and Boo are each given three cards with images of different instruments on them, and the rest of the cards are placed in the middle. On each turn, players must choose a card to discard from their hand, then choose any face down card from the middle. The first player to get three matching cards wins.
The Story mini-game for Bowser's Gnarly Party is "The Final Battle", a huge molten lava-filled cube containing platform-jumping sequences and sliding puzzles alike. After crossing two sets of flaming platforms and solving two sliding puzzles (of Koopa Kid and Bowser), the player finally comes face-to-face with the Koopa King. One climactic battle later, the player wins a Bowser-themed present for that character's Room, a constellation in the shape of the character appears, and the credits roll. Also, after completing all six boards with one character in Story Mode, Bowser's Gnarly Party will become available for play in Party Mode.
The final Story mini-game, "Kareening Koopas", a sliding tropical-themed puzzle involving Koopa shells, is played after Koopa's Seaside Soiree.
5. Which of these is NOT an effect of the Mini Mushroom?

Answer: The player takes coins from any player he passes

The Mini Mushroom reduces the player to a diminutive size for the duration of the turn. Subsequently, the Dice Block only rolls from 1 to 5, but the effects of being Mini make up for that. The player may now pass through orange Mini-Pipes on the board, and play Mini Mini-Games for coins or items. Each board contains two Mini Mini-Games, one for coins and one for items. If a player is normal-sized or Mega, they will bypass these games.

They are only played when your character is Mini. The Super Mini Mushroom allows for even more Mini fun.

It has all the same effects, except now the player rolls two dice, each containing the numbers 1-5. Taking coins from players you pass is an effect of the Mega Mushroom, which makes the player more than double in size for the duration of the turn. Any player the Mega player passes is squashed and must give the Mega player 10 of their coins.

The player also rolls two dice instead of one. However, he will bypass all board events, such as Item Shops, Lottery Shops, and even the Star.

The Super Mega Mushroom has the same effects, but the player now rolls three dice instead of two.
6. Which Battle Mini-Game is completely based on luck?

Answer: "Bowser's Bigger Blast"

When any player lands on a Battle Space (green with a picture of a Bob-omb), a Bob-omb appears and takes a random number of coins, from 5-50 coins, from each player. Then the player who landed on the space chooses one of two Battle Mini-Games for everyone to play. There are a total of six Battle Mini-Games. The winner gets 2/3 of the coins in the "pot", while the second place player gets the other 1/3 of the coins.
"Bowser's Bigger Blast" (similar to "Bowser's Big Blast" from "Mario Party 2") sets the four players in an abandoned factory containing a giant bomb in the likeness of Bowser. In front of the bomb are five colored switches, one that sets off the bomb and four duds. Each player, in turn, must choose a switch and see what happens. If the switch is a dud, the player stays in the game. If the player chooses the real switch, the bomb explodes and the player is out. A new Bowser head bomb is lowered into its place. The game continues with one less switch each round, and the last player left wins. This Mini-Game is completely based on luck: it is completely random which switch is the real one each round.
In "Paths of Peril" players must walk along a narrow mountainside until they reach the goal. The path splits twice, and each side is randomly either a straighter path with minimal curves or a longer path with many twists and turns. Falling off costs a few seconds each time (the player is rescued by Lakitu). The first player to reach the goal wins.
"Trace Race" is similar to "Crazy Cutter" from the first "Mario Party". Each player is given a crayon, and must trace a squiggly line on a sheet of paper as accurately as possible. Each player's line is given a score, and the player with the highest score wins.
"Rumble Fishing" sets the players fishing on a pier. When the controller rumbles, players must be the first to press A and reel in the fish. The player who reels it in the fastest wins.
Other Battle Mini-Games include "Chain Chomp Fever" and "Butterfly Blitz".
7. Which of these is NOT a Bowser Mini-Game?

Answer: Table of Doom

Whenever a player lands on a red Bowser Space, they are usually menaced by a Koopa Kid who steals coins from them, and sometimes the other players. However, sometimes Bowser himself appears. He either switches everyone's place on the board, divides everyone's coins evenly, gives the player a Bowser Suit, or forces all players into one of three Bowser Mini-Games. Whoever loses either gives up all their coins, half their coins, or all their items.
In "Balloon of Doom", players take turns pumping up a Bowser balloon. Players must be careful, however, as whoever bursts the balloon loses.
In "Darts of Doom", each player must throw three darts simultaneously at a spinning dart board, with Bowser's face smack dab on the bullseye. Whoever gets the lowest score loses, though if any player hits the bullseye, they automatically lose.
In "Fruits of Doom", Bowser gives the players a list of fruits he wants, starting slowly but then trailing off very quickly. Each player, in turn, chooses one of a set of fruits to bring to Bowser. Whoever brings the fruit Bowser dislikes loses.
8. On Goomba's Greedy Gala, how can the player win more easily at the Roulette Wheel?

Answer: By giving Goomba coins

Shortly after the beginning, players on Goomba's Greedy Gala come across a large Roulette Wheel that decides which section players travel to next. Goomba throws a counter onto the roulette, and whichever color it lands on determines the section the player goes to. If the counter lands on a star mark, the player gets 20 coins and the choice of any path they want. Players can also bribe Goomba with coins to up the odds of the roulette landing on the section with the Star.

The more the player pays (5, 10, or 20 coins), the higher the likelihood of reaching the Star section, but the system is not foolproof.

It's entirely possible to pay 20 coins and still not get the right section. The dice-rolling competition refers to the Dice Duel located on each section. If the player rolls higher than Goomba, he receives 10 coins and continues normally, but if the player rolls lower, he is sent back to Start.
9. What is the effect of the Sparky Sticker?

Answer: Zaps 10 coins from the first player to pass its space

When the Sparky Sticker is used, it immediately electrifies the space the player is standing on. The first opponent to pass that space loses 10 coins, as well as any transforming effects (Mega/Mini). Luckily, players' items and stars are safe.
10. Who appears from one of the game's items to transport players to the Star?

Answer: A genie

The item is the Magic Lamp, which costs 30 coins at the Item Shop. When a player uses the Lamp, a large genie appears and transports the player directly to the Star. Just make sure you have 20 coins first! If you guessed Flutter, that refers to an Orb with similar effects in "Mario Party 6".
11. Which of these Mini-Games does NOT use the A button at all?

Answer: "Take a Breather"

"Take a Breather" only uses the L and R buttons. Players take as many breaths as possible in a few seconds, before everyone goes underwater. Whoever stays under the longest wins.
"Domination" only uses the A button. In this Mini-Game, players press the switch in front of them, by rapidly pressing A, to set up their Whomp dominoes. After the initial ten seconds, the dominoes are counted, and the player with the most Whomps wins.
"Right Oar Left?" uses the A and B buttons. Players are split into teams, and each team must pilot a Dorrie paddleboat out of a dark cave. Using the A and B buttons to paddle the right and left oars, respectively, players paddle through the cave, while avoiding flamethrowers along the way. The first team out of the cave wins.
"Stamp Out" uses the Control Stick and the A button. Players are set on a piece of notebook paper, sitting on colored stamp pads. Everyone stamps their color all over the page, and tries to cover more paper than the other players. When time expires, the player with the highest percentage of their color on the page wins.
12. Which popular team sport appears as a 1 vs. 3 Mini-Game?

Answer: Soccer

The soccer Mini-Game is "GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!" It pits one player as the goalie, against three players kicking soccer balls at the net. Within the time limit, the kickers must kick ten balls into the goal, while the goalie tries to block their shots. If the kickers can make ten goals before time runs out, they win.

Otherwise, the goalie wins. If you guessed basketball, there is a basketball Mini-Game, "Three Throw", though it is a 4-player mini-game. In this game, players simply shoot an endless supply of basketballs at three rows of moving baskets (the middle row baskets are worth two points).

The player with the most points wins.
13. What is the effect of the ? (Happening) Spaces in Shy Guy's Jungle Jam?

Answer: They activate the wishing well

All the Happening Spaces in Shy Guy's Jungle Jam are located in front of the board's two wishing wells. If a player lands on one, they can choose to cast a wish, either a fun or sad wish. It seems to be random, but the player's wish can either please or anger the well. If the well is pleased, the player can continue on their merry way. But, if the player angers the well, the middle bridges connecting the two halves of the level will be out for the next 1-3 turns.
Effects of Happening Spaces on the boards:
Goomba's Greedy Gala- the player rides a poker chip along a course full of coins, between the blue and purple sections of the level.
Toad's Midway Madness- the ones by the teacups switch their direction, while the ones on the roller coaster track cause all players on the track to be chased by the car to the opposite end.
Boo's Haunted Bash- puts players one "minute" closer to Big Boo's appearance
Koopa's Seaside Soiree- the ones by the docks cause the player to ride a dolphin across to the matching dock, while the ones around the Koopa Kabana give the player a one-night's stay at the Kabana for the current worth of the hotel (afterwards, a wave knocks it down and building resumes at zero coins).
Bowser's Gnarly Party- located by the Bowser statues, landing on one burns one of the player's items, rendering it useless.
14. Of the following, which is NOT a type of Mini-Game in "Mario Party 4"?

Answer: Duel

There were no Duel Mini-Games in "Mario Party 4". Duels first appeared in "Mario Party 2" and re-appeared in "Mario Party 6".
Etc. Mini-Games include "The Final Battle!" (Bowser's Story Mini-Game from Story Mode), along with two other Mini-Games encountered on Bowser's Gnarly Party. If a player passes Bowser in Mega form, he challenges the player to either an ability battle ("Bowser Wrestling") or a luck match ("Panels of Doom"). I'm still not too sure why "The Final Battle!" was considered an Etc. Mini-Game rather than a Story Mini-Game.
Battle Mini-Games are played during the board game when a player lands on a Battle Space (green with a Bob-omb). The Bob-omb takes 5-50 coins from each player, and the winner gets 2/3 of the pot, while the second place player takes the other 1/3.
Story Mini-Games only appear in Story Mode. After a player wins one of the boards, he must face off against the Board host (Goomba, Shy Guy, Toad, Boo, or Koopa) in a Story Mini-Game. When you win, you get a present for the Present Room. Story Mini-Games match up with the boards as follows:
Goomba's Greedy Gala- Goomba's Chip Flip
Shy Guy's Jungle Jam- Archaeologuess
Toad's Midway Madness- Bowser Bop
Boo's Haunted Bash- Mystic Match 'Em
Koopa's Seaside Soiree- Kareening Koopas
Bowser's Gnarly Party- The Final Battle! (Etc. Mini-Game)
15. Which of these Mini-Games is a Bonus Mini-Game (a coin-collecting game)?

Answer: "Pair-a-Sailing""

"Pair-a-Sailing" is a 2 vs. 2 bonus mini-game. Players are split into teams, and one player on each team drives the boat while the other is attached to a parachute. The player in the boat controls the speed to make the parachuter rise and fall, while the parachuting player steers to catch the coins in the air. At the end of the game, players get the number of coins their team collected.
"Candlelight Flight" is a 1 vs. 3 mini-game. One player runs around holding a lit candle, while the other three, armed with water hoses, must try to put out the light before time runs out. The light takes five squirts to destroy. If the team puts out the light in time, they win. Otherwise, the single player wins.
"Cheep Cheep Sweep" is a 2 vs. 2 mini-game. Players are split into a red and blue team and placed in a fountain full of Cheep Cheeps. Red Cheep Cheeps are worth one point, while yellow Cheep Cheeps are worth two points. Players must catch Cheep Cheeps with their net then bring them back to their team's flagged area for points. The team with the most points when time runs out wins.
"Team Treasure Trek" is a 2 vs. 2 mini-game, as its name implies. Each team must combine a treasure chest and a key found in two ? boxes of that team's color (red or blue). Players trek throughout the maze, each collect the appropriate colored ? box, and then meet each other in the maze. The first team to accomplish all those tasks unlocks the chest and wins.
