Moving away from the enchanted river I head up a hill and come across the dwelling of a being who is believed to be the most ancient being in Middle Earth.

Although the area is grassy it is bereft of trees. In the distance to my right is a large stone monolith, like a skeleton finger sticking up, called the Dead Spire.

Many of the hills are large burial tumulus covered with moss and rocks that appear to have been sealed for years (hopefully).

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let us start our tour on the west side of Bree-land. I am standing beside a large bridge that spans a river that is the physical border between the regions of Bree-land and The Shire. What is the name of the river?

Answer: Brandywine

The Brandywine River is also known as Baranduin, meaning "golden-brown river" in Sindarin. It originates from Lake Evendim and flows south providing a natural border between The Shire and Bree-land.

Anduin, also known as the Great River, flows through Rhovanion, Rohan and Gondor passing by sites such as Lothlorien. Bruinen, also known as the Loudwater, originates in the Misty Mountains, flowing through Rivendell Valley until it meets the Hoarwell. The Water arises from Rushock Bog, running through Hobbiton until it eventually empties into the Brandywine River.
2. Turning south I immediately enter Buckland, an area populated by Hobbits who tend to be deemed by Shire Folk as a bit queer, primarily because of their familiarity with boats and more adventurous spirit. As I travel south I come across a small settlement where Frodo Baggins purchased a house as an excuse for him to leave Bag End and the Shire. What is the name of the settlement?

Answer: Crickhollow

A quiet community which was excellent as a guise for Frodo's departure, it is conveniently out of the way of the Shire and close to not well known passages out of Buckland.

Newbury is one of the first hamlets that you come across when entering Buckland from the north. Michel Delving is the capital of the Shire and Tuckborough is in the southern part of the Shire, primarily the home for the Took clan.
3. I walk through a tunnel through the High Hay and come across an old dark forest. You can feel an ominous presence here. As if the trees were watching you. What is the name of the forest?

Answer: Old Forest

The Old Forest is an untamed wood that is home to "active" trees. Frodo and his fellowship entered this forest to escape notice of the town folk and keep away from the highway where the Black Riders were watching.

Mirkwood, previously known as Greenwood, is another foreboding forest on the eastern side of the Misty Mountains. Bilbo, many years ago on his adventure to the Lonely Mountain, had numerous adventures there.

Lothlorien is the golden wood that is the home to Lady Galadriel and Cereborn.

Fangorn is an ancient forest where Treebeard resides along with the Hurons, the tree herders. These trees are related to the trees found in the Old Forest.
4. I enter into the forest following a close path. Funny, the path seems to be heading a little different than last time I was here! As if the trees move to shepherd unwary travelers away from their destination. After a while I come to a clearing on a hill. This is Bald Hill, where Frodo and his fellowship stopped to eat and rest. I pick a path from this clearing and eventually end up at a slow moving river. Although the water is tranquil the atmosphere is not! What is the name of the river?

Answer: The Withywindle

The Withywindle meanders through the forest and is hard for travelers to avoid because the paths in the forest tend to move and channel people toward it. There is a sinister feeling to these waters which seem to saturate the forest around it.

The Shirebourn is in the Shire which runs into the Brandywine south of Stock. The Hoarwell, also known as the Mitheithel, runs from the Misty Mountains through the Ettenmoors forming a natural border the Lone-lands and the Trollshaws. The River Isen flows out of southern Misty Mountains through Isengard and forms part of the natural border of Rohan.
5. I travel along the quiet river heading deeper into the forest. Although the path along the bank is not too tenuous, I am feeling very tired and lethargic. My mind drifts back to some warning in a traveler's guide about this area. A large willow tree looms in front of me. So peaceful... so comfy! I think I might have a spot of rest beside it. What is the name of this tree?

Answer: Old Man Willow

Old Man Willow is a treacherous and ancient tree who saps the energy from the unwary and then strangles them with his roots. Frodo and company nearly fell prey to this ancient power as it protected the forest from unwanted intruders.

The Party Tree is located on the outskirts of Hobbiton in The Shire and is the centrepiece of the Party Field where Bilbo Baggin's 111th birthday festivities were held.

The Great Willow, also in The Shire, is not as well known but is a place of mystery and romance for young hobbits.

Grima Wormtongue is Sauraman's offsider who poisoned the ear of King Theoden in Rhohan. Radagast the Brown is one of the five wizards and is by no means a villain. Smeagol, also known as Gollum, has no political agenda. He seeks only the return of "his precious", the one ring.
