Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let us start our tour on the west side of Bree-land.
I am standing beside a large bridge that spans a river that is the physical border between the regions of Bree-land and The Shire.
What is the name of the river?
2. Turning south I immediately enter Buckland, an area populated by Hobbits who tend to be deemed by Shire Folk as a bit queer, primarily because of their familiarity with boats and more adventurous spirit.
As I travel south I come across a small settlement where Frodo Baggins purchased a house as an excuse for him to leave Bag End and the Shire.
What is the name of the settlement?
3. I walk through a tunnel through the High Hay and come across an old dark forest. You can feel an ominous presence here. As if the trees were watching you.
What is the name of the forest?
4. I enter into the forest following a close path. Funny, the path seems to be heading a little different than last time I was here! As if the trees move to shepherd unwary travelers away from their destination.
After a while I come to a clearing on a hill. This is Bald Hill, where Frodo and his fellowship stopped to eat and rest. I pick a path from this clearing and eventually end up at a slow moving river. Although the water is tranquil the atmosphere is not!
What is the name of the river?
5. I travel along the quiet river heading deeper into the forest. Although the path along the bank is not too tenuous, I am feeling very tired and lethargic. My mind drifts back to some warning in a traveler's guide about this area.
A large willow tree looms in front of me. So peaceful... so comfy! I think I might have a spot of rest beside it.
What is the name of this tree?
6. Shaking my head I clear myself of the cobwebs inside and focus on the tour at hand.
Moving away from the enchanted river I head up a hill and come across the dwelling of a being who is believed to be the most ancient being in Middle Earth.
He looks pretty good for his age! Always with a song on his lips and a dance in his step. He obviously "is a merry fellow; bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow."
Who is this ancient being?
7. We cannot leave this area without meeting a famous water-spirit who also resides in this ancient forest. She is the spouse of the ancient being we just met.
We will find her at a spring that is named after her.
What is her name?
8. Moving east and leaving the forest I come across a large area of rolling hills. There is an ancient and foreboding feel about the area.
Although the area is grassy it is bereft of trees. In the distance to my right is a large stone monolith, like a skeleton finger sticking up, called the Dead Spire.
Many of the hills are large burial tumulus covered with moss and rocks that appear to have been sealed for years (hopefully).
What is the area called?
9. Moving further east I come to a lush valley with the North-South Road (also known as the Greenway) traveling through it. Looking a bit further I can see the township of Bree.
This area has had some recent disturbance as it was rumoured that the Witch-king of Angmar camped there whilst searching for the Ring-bearer.
On the southern side you will find ruins called the South-guard ruins which are currently over-run by brigands as they seek to isolate the Bree-land area by cutting off access to the area of Minhiriath.
What is this area called?
10. For the final part of our tour we head back into the town of Bree.
Entering through the South Gate we come across the house of an infamous townsperson who has now been shunned because of his dealing with the Southerners.
Although heavily implicated with the theft of Frodo and the fellowship's horses, he sold a bedraggled pony to Barliman Butterbur for the party to use. Sam named the pony after him.
What was the name of the villain that owned this house?
