Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Since we last met him in Spielburg, our hero has taken a long ride on a magical carpet. He reaches the magnificent desert city of Shapeir. What is the name of this new and exotic kingdom?

Answer: Shapeir

In "Quest for Glory 1", after defeating the Brigands of Spielburg Valley, our hero recovers a magical rug belonging to Abdulla Doo, a merchant robbed by the Brigands. Abdulla and his two friends, the cat-like Shameen and Shema, ask you to come back with them to their home land of Shapeir, and help to save the kingdom from a growing evil.

"Quest for Glory 2" takes place in a large Arabian-style city called Shapeir, which is in the magnificent kingdom of... Shapeir. Parts of the game involve wandering into the vast deserts that stretch out around the city.
2. The city of Shapeir is a bonafide maze of narrow streets and alleyways. At least for the first game or two, you'll probably be unable to navigate properly without the use of a map. Some easy-to-reach areas are the plazas in the east, west, south and center of the city. So there are four plazas, but which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Bazaar Plaza

All plazas have at least a few stores, and although the central plaza is the largest and offers many different amenities, the dominant part of that plaza is the fountain that sits at its very center. The fountain is the heart of the city and gives it life. Therefore, this grand plaza is called the Fountain Plaza.

Your inn, which is owned by your Katta friends, is situated at the Gate Plaza, right at the city exit. This means you'll have quick access to both the main city streets, as well as the desert outside. Unlike "Quest for Glory 1", getting back to the Inn is usually easy, and you can do it at any time of the day or night.
3. Some of the more interesting places to visit in the city are located within the narrow alleyways and cul-de-sacs. Getting there can be confusing, and a map will surely help. But no one will sell anything to you, because you do not have local currency to trade with! Fortunately, there's a moneychanger in town. How do you get from the main gate to the moneychanger without a map?

Answer: Left, Right, Right, Right, Right, Left

Ali Chica (Chico Marx), from the store across the Gate Plaza, will give you these directions. Getting back involves walking the route backwards, which can be confusing if you don't remember the way. But getting back to any plaza or main street is usually not too difficult.

The map is a very useful tool - it allows you to instantly teleport to any of the four plazas, as well as any places of interest you've discovered in the city. You can use the map to navigate manually too, as it shows your current location and heading. But you'll have to explore manually to find those "interesting spots"!
4. Amongst the shops in the central plaza you'll find Harik the Apothecary. He serves largely the same purpose as the Healer did in "Quest for Glory 1". However, instead of potions, he sells pills. How many different kinds of pills does he sell?

Answer: Four

Harik sells the regular "Health-Vigor-Magic" variety, but will also sell poison antidote pills. These will help protect you if you face scorpions in the desert. Their poison could easily kill you, so you'll want to carry a few antidote pills.

Pills cost a pretty penny, but fortunately there is an overabundance of money to be made in Shapeir and the deserts around it, so you'll probably be able to buy a great amount of pills by the time the game is over.

Also, it is possible to carry pills into the next game in the series, which will save you a LOT of money on potions in "Quest for Glory 3". You don't carry over your money, so consider investing it before leaving Shapeir in the later part of the game.
5. What adorns the front of the weaponsmith's store, in the western plaza of the city?

Answer: Bellows

The weaponsmith has a rather limited selection of items. He'll sell a fine sword, regular daggers, and chainmail armor (though if you're a fighter, you may already have one). Issur, as is his name, is very macho, and will not treat you with respect until you prove your masculinity (you too, girls) by beating him in an arm-wrestling competition. You'd have to be pretty strong for that.

The bellows hanging over his store front will become very important later in the game.
6. There are close to a dozen stalls available that will sell all kinds of stuff. These stalls are run by Katta, a race of humanoid cats indigenous to the region. Which of these items is NOT sold at any of the Katta stalls?

Answer: X-Ray Glasses

Katta are very humble and honorable, and they all look up to you as a Hero for helping Spielburg and in particular its two Katta residents Shameen and Shema. They sell pottery, jewelry, brasswork, food, leather, carpets, and many other things. You'll find that most of them will sell at least one useful or even very useful item. Treat the Katta with respect, and they'll be your most loyal helpers to the very end.

The X-Ray Glasses are sold at the Magic Shop, and their only purpose is a bit too naughty to be described here. ;)
7. The Sultan's palace stands at the very edge of the eastern plaza. Regardless, it is the least important of all plazas.

Answer: True

Unfortunately, it's true. Entrance to the palace is forbidden, and there's little to do in the Palace Plaza anyway, as even the merchants here have nothing you need. Still, you'll have to help those merchants later in the game, and once you do they will reward you properly. Other than this, there's no reason to go to the Palace Plaza.
8. There's an Astrologer living south of the palace, an esteemed adviser to the Sultan. His room lies at the end of the Tarik of Stars. The astrologer sits on the floor, divining. What is he sitting under?

Answer: An unusually tall four-poster bed

He does have an orrerie in his room, or maybe it's a model of the atom? He also has a star chart, but his most important divining tool is a dartboard that has "YES" and "NO" on it. So it all boils down to a 50/50 chance, in the end.

The Astrologer isn't very useful for anything, but you will get points for having him read your future.
9. Excluding the cut-scene at the end of the game, the poet Omar will give poetry readings at only two different locations in the city.

Answer: True

Omar talks only in rhymes and metaphors, and can sometimes be hard to follow. Fortunately, he has a translator companion who will translate his poems into... err... English. Of course, some of his poems contain important hints, if you read carefully. Still, the translations are usually enough.

Omar gives poetry readings at the inn every few nights. He'll also read at the Fountain Plaza on day 7.
10. There's one place in the city that you'll find in almost every "Quest for Glory" game. It doesn't sell anything, but you'll definitely want to visit it. There's a lion sitting out front. What is this place?

Answer: The Adventurer's Guild

While you can't buy anything here, the adventurer's guild is usually your best bet for information about tackling the various dangers you'll face during your adventure. In "Quest for Glory 1", you could at most talk with the guild-keeper about monsters, but in "Quest for Glory 2" you can also practice actual fighting there. You'll do this with the help of Uhura, a warrior woman from the savannah tribes, and the keeper of the local guild chapterhouse.

Practicing is a great way to boost up your skills and learn the proper use of combat actions without risking your life. Fighters in particular will spend most of their time either here or out in the desert. You'll want to get your skills up quickly, because the desert is truly a dangerous place.
11. Also hidden in the maze of alleyways is a door adorned with the symbol of an eye. Don't force down this door or try to sneak inside! When you knock, you will be asked several questions. Which of these is NOT one of the questions you'll be asked?

Answer: What is your favourite color?

This door leads into the home of Shapeir's resident water-sorceress, Aziza. Despite her specialization in the ways of the magical element of water, Aziza can only be described as "dry". She can tell you a lot of things you really need to know, but will not tolerate any sort of disrespectful behavior. Greet her when you enter, sit when she asks you do, always agree to drink some tea, and whatever you do, don't get up without asking permission to leave! If you do manage to upset her, you can try to apologize.

Aziza is an important authority on matters of magic, mystery, and the art of advancing-the-plot. If you think you've hit a dead end trying to solve some of the problems you're facing, it's possible that you simply need to pay her another visit.

Oh, and "What is your favourite color" is one of the questions asked by the bridge-keeper in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". Erasmus' guardian gargoyle will also ask you that question in "Quest for Glory 1" - the answer is obviously "pink"!
12. There's a door at the very northern edge of the city, but not everybody can go through it. Which of the following character classes can go through the door?

Answer: Magic-Users only

This door leads into the Wizards' Institute of Technocery, otherwise known as "WIT". While anyone with magical ability can detect the door (using "Detect Magic"), only true Magic-Users can go inside and perform the trials involved.
13. Groucho Marx (yes!) makes a cameo appearance in this "Quest for Glory" episode, as do two of his brothers. Groucho will be at the stables which are right outside the city gate. He'll try to sell you an animal for riding into the desert. What kind of animal does he sell?

Answer: Saurus

A Saurus is a small cousin of the dinosaurs - "Quest for Glory" features several kinds of dinosaurs in the first three games in the series. In "Quest for Glory 2", you can ride one out to the desert. The saurus you buy will be pretty cowardly, and will throw you off each time a monster approaches. But riding is often better than walking, because your Saurus has the ability to instantly find the way back to the city gates. This is very important because it's easy to get lost in the desert. Also, your Saurus has a secret which you'll later uncover.

By the way, there are no camels in Shapeir, and virtually no horses in any games in the series. There's one horse standing outside the stables in Spielburg Castle, and that's pretty much it. Weird, huh?
14. Later in the game, you will travel to Shapeir's sister-city of Raseir. These two cities were once true twins, but Raseir has since fallen into dark hands, and there have been many changes here. Which of the following is NOT a difference between Raseir and Shapeir?

Answer: Walking through the streets of Raseir, you might get ambushed by brigands.

The Emir of Raseir has been overthrown, and his brother rules in his stead. However, the new Emir is not truly the one in power. The captain of the guard holds the city with an iron fist, and his men patrol the streets constantly for violations of the many new draconian rules. But even the captain of the guard is not really in charge - there is someone even more sinister than him, who is really in control of Raseir. Regardless, it's obvious that Raseir is not a pleasant place to stay. You'll have to return it to its former glory by the end of this game.

Raseir's map shows that it is almost identical to Shapeir, except it's "flipped" with the gate on the north side. Therefore, to get from the Gate Plaza to the Fountain Plaza, go south instead of north. Also, most streets in Raseir are blocked, and there's really not much use to exploration.
15. During your stay in Raseir, you will meet a woman who will have something to ask of you. Where will you meet her?

Answer: Along the road between the gate and the fountain.

The woman will take you to meet the Emir's daughter, but this isn't a pleasant occasion - she needs a favour which may put you at grave risk. You can refuse to help, but some characters just can't pass up the offer if they want to complete the game.

Oh, and where did I put those X-Ray Glasses? Hmmm...
