Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can a thief become a Paladin by the end of the game?

Answer: Yes

However strange that may sound, any character class can have a go at Paladinhood. Still, thieves are the least likely to succeed in this. The main reason for this is that any illegal activities you perform will decrease your Paladin Score, and several of them can actually bar you from Paladinhood instantly. While a thief can theoretically avoid illegal activities, this will make his efforts extremely more difficult - unless he is either a magic-user or very well-trained in combat.

Things to avoid if you want to be a Paladin: Don't steal, don't backstab (VGA remake), and return any item you find which obviously doesn't belong to you.
2. Of all three character types, the Thief is the primary puzzle-solver. As such, he will have an array of skills that are required for his special puzzle-solving attitude. Which of the following skills is NOT unique to the thief?

Answer: Throwing

While it is possible to add Climbing, Stealth and Lockpicking to any other character (at a high cost), only the thief has these by default. They are vital to pretty much everything the Thief does.

Throwing is also an important skill for thieves, who generally throw daggers at things, mostly to get them to stop attacking. However, fighters can also throw by default.
3. Of all three classes, the Thief is least suitable for combat. Therefore, which of these is the Thief's best choice for circumventing combat altogether?

Answer: Stealth

Throwing is good for weakening an enemy before it reaches close-combat range. Dodging is only useful once combat has started. Luck is unreliable. Stealth, however, will often allow you to avoid fighting completely. This is one of the thief's most important skills, and will also assist in puzzle-solving. With a high enough stealth level, a thief can actually avoid ALL combat in the game.

Therefore, Stealth is the most useful skill for survival, unless your combat skills are paramount enough to take on dangerous creatures with nothing but a dagger.
4. Have you been paying attention? How is the thief sign performed?

Answer: Thumb on nose, palm stretched out, other hand rubs belly.

The thief sign is extremely important. It identifies you as a thief, which means it can save you from being robbed (or killed) by other thieves. Of course, you'd better watch out - if you make it to the wrong person, they may arrest or assault you for being a thief, if they can recognize the sign.

The full description is: One thumb on your nose, hand stretched out perpendicular to your face, fingers wiggling. Eyes are on your thumb, while your other hand rubs your belly. This is very bizarre (try it), and some of the reaction you might get from characters who think you're sick or insane can be hilarious.
5. How many characters in total will respond favourably to the Thief Sign in "Quest for Glory 2"?

Answer: 2

Only those who are willing to give you employment as a thief will respond favourably. In Shapeir, this is Dinarzad the moneychanger. In Raseir it will be Signor Ferrari. Also, Rakeesh the Liontaur will recognize the thief sign, but he is a righteous Paladin and will do nothing except warn you not to use the thief sign if you don't want any trouble (how nice of him). Also, whatever you do, don't show the sign to Issur the weaponsmith!
6. Aside from one extra break-in available in the VGA remake, how many different break-in jobs can you perform in the city of Shapeir? (Remember, if you play the VGA remake, deduct 1).

Answer: Two

Strangely, the first job is harder than the second, but the third (available only in the VGA remake) is considerably harder than either of these. In addition, you will be given another break-in job once you get to Raseir, assuming you know who to talk to (the choices are pretty limited).
7. Thieves must make sure that they are fully equipped to undertake any assignment. In "Quest for Glory 2", there are three essential tools you should carry. Which of these three tools is NOT useful for each and every break-in?

Answer: Magic Rope

The lock-pick is a no-brainer, as you will need it to get in through the door. Oil comes very much in handy, because it helps prevent squeaky cabinet doors from waking up the sleeping residents.

The Magic Rope is extremely useful for a thief, and you'll absolutely need it by the endgame unless playing the VGA remake. However, the break-ins at the brothers' house and the weaponsmith's shop do not require the use of the rope. In the VGA remake you'll need the rope for the third break-in, and it's also required for the break-in at Raseir in both versions.
8. The Magic Rope is required for more than robbery. How many times will you have to use the Magic Rope in "Quest for Glory 2" (not counting the VGA remake's extra break-in)?

Answer: Six

This includes the theft of the Bellows, acquiring a Griffin Feather, the break-in at Raseir, the Chamber of Elementals, and twice at the Palace of Raseir. You can use the rope for training your "Climbing" skill, but it has a limited number of uses so you'd better avoid that.
9. Aside from the coins, and the item available only in the VGA remake, how many items can you steal from the Four Brothers' house (the first break-in)?

Answer: Two

You were sent to recover a silver tea-pot for Dinarzad, so that's one. The other item is an emerald bowl, which you'll find if you thoroughly search the cabinet. In total, this break-in is worth about 100 Dinars. Not bad, eh?

Unfortunately, it's not that easy - you'll need to be able to quickly find hiding places, because the four brothers keep coming back from god-knows-where and they'll be moving through the well-lit room where you're trying to do your work. Make sure you cover up everything you've done before they come through, otherwise they'll quickly realize that there's a thief in the house!

Oh, and in the VGA remake, you'll have to look very closely at some things - you may be able to find a valuable silver dagger, which is better held-on-to than thrown! This item does not appear in the original EGA version.
10. Where does Issur the Weaponsmith keep his valuables?

Answer: Under the anvil

The Weapon Shop break-in is quite simple, as there's no real threat and there's very little to do. Of course, unless you're as strong as an ox, you won't be able to move the anvil. That's why thieves carry lubricant though - to help ease the insertion. This break-in is also worth around 100 Dinars, in straight cash.
11. In "Quest for Glory 1", thieves could play the Dag-Nab-It dagger-throwing minigame. Which of the following skill-based minigames in "Quest for Glory 2" is unique to thieves, and cannot be played by other character classes if they have the proper skills?

Answer: All of these are unique to thieves

In "Quest for Glory 1", playing a thief meant solving puzzles and avoiding skill-based activities. Thieves can usually avoid combat by sneaking (and should, given that they are definitely not built for fighting), and even their unique minigame did not require manual dexterity (it was turn-based).

In "Quest for Glory 2", you will need to be able to work your fingers quickly if you wish to survive some of the ordeals awaiting your thief. Walking the tightrope is probably the most difficult mini-game (worse even than combat). Still, if you work your skills up before attempting this, it may become a lot easier.
12. Unless you're capable of powerful spell-casting, you will need to acquire a few packets of burning powder to defeat one of the Elementals wreaking havoc in Shapeir. Which elemental is defeated using these packets?

Answer: Earth Elemental

The Earth Elemental is vulnerable only to fire. Fighters can acquire a flaming sword for the task, while Magic-Users already have their own fire-spitting powers. Thieves, however, must settle for throwing little packets of burning powder (gunpowder?) which must quickly be hurled at the Earth Elemental. If you don't throw them fast enough, the elemental will close into combat range. Your best bet at this point would be to run - your weapon cannot possibly hurt it.
13. At Raseir, you will need to rob the captain of the guard himself. There is only one item you must recover. It is a black statue. What does the statue depict?

Answer: A bird of prey

The black falcon statue is a play on the Maltese Falcon, a legendary treasure depicted in a movie of the same name. In fact, one of these statues appears in each of the "Quest for Glory" games, serving as a sort of running gag. Unfortunately, this particular statue holds value. The break-in at Raseir doesn't really seem to give much of a reward at all.
14. At the final showdown, the thief will have made his way through the Palace to reach the place where Ad Avis is performing his evil ritual. What is your direction in relation to Ad Avis when you arrive at this final scene?

Answer: Behind Ad Avis

You will go out to a balcony across from Ad Avis' platform where he is performing the ritual. You'll need to cross the chasm between these two balconies, then make your way along a narrow ledge towards him. This will require a lot of skill and very quick reflexes.
15. What is your last action in the game, as a thief?

Answer: Throw Dagger

After making your way toward Ad Avis, you will need to strike him twice with a thrown dagger. This can be tricky, as you need to dodge the fireballs he throws at you at the same time. So make sure you have enough daggers by the time you reach him. In the VGA version, if you do not have enough daggers when leaving for Raseir (or lack the Magic Rope), you will play through a different ending which is similar to the Fighter's endgame.

Getting through the thief's game requires good puzzle-solving skills, quick thinking, and quick reflexes. It can easily be the trickiest class to play, but that's part of the fun!
