Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many playable characters are there in "Super Mario Kart"?

Answer: eight

All of the playable characters in the game are Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach only referred to as Princess in the game, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong Jr., and Koopa Troopa. While playing in Mario Kart Grand Prix mode, the computer characters have special abilities that they use while racing. Donkey Kong Jr. throws banana peels, Koopa Troopa throws Koopa shells, Yoshi throws eggs, Princess and Toad throws mushrooms that can make drivers smaller, Mario and Luigi use star power that makes them invincible, and Bowser throws lava balls.
2. Many of the courses in "Super Mario Kart" are based on locations in what other popular Super Nintendo game?

Answer: "Super Mario World"

The Choco Island tracks are based on Chocolate Island in "Super Mario World" and the Ghost Valley tracks are based on the Ghost Houses in the same game. There are a total of twenty tracks in the game. They are divided into four cups Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special, there are five tracks in each cup.

There are in total four Mario Circuit tracks, three Donut Plains tracks, three Bowser Castle tracks, three Ghost Valley tracks, two Choco Island tracks, two Koopa Beach tracks, two Vanilla Lake tracks, and the final course Rainbow Road.
3. There are no tracks in "Super Mario Kart" that have to be unlocked.

Answer: False

The five courses in the Special Cup have to be unlocked. They are unlocked by winning gold in the three previous cups in Mario Grand Prix on 100cc difficulty. Even though there are three difficulty levels in the game, 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc, the Special Cup can only be played on either 100cc or 150cc in Mario Grand Prix. Only 50cc and 100cc are available in the beginning of the game, to unlock 150cc you must win the gold cup in the Special Cup as well.
4. Which of these is not a usable item in "Super Mario Kart"?

Answer: Spiny shell

Lightning is used to make all opposing drivers tiny, they can then be ran over by the larger driver. Red shells are homing shells that will hit the nearest driver in front of the user. Feathers are used to give the driver a large spin jump, they can jump normally but the item enhances that trait.

The blue spiny shell that is used in other "Mario Kart" games is used to automatically hit the driver in first place, is not in "Super Mario Kart" that item first appeared in "Mario Kart 64" for the Nintendo 64.
5. What common enemies of Mario are seen on the second and third Donut Plains courses?

Answer: Monty Moles

The Monty Moles are seen popping out of holes, drivers can run into them but the Monty Mole would get stuck on them. While driving with a Monty Mole the driver slows down, jumping in the go-cart will get rid of the pesky rodent. Although Shy Guys, Goombas, and Bloopers are also Mario's enemies they do not appear in any part of this game.
6. Many different versions of "Mario Kart" have a battle mode in the game, does "Super Mario Kart" have one as well?

Answer: Yes

The object of battle mode is to knock off the three balloons on your opponent. Balloons can be lost if they get hit by a shell, slip on a banana peel, get hit by a player using star power, or if they fall off the course. Balloons can also be lost if a large driver such as Bowser hits a small driver such as Yoshi.

There are four courses to choose from in battle mode in "Super Mario Kart".
7. If you ever drive off a race course in "Super Mario Kart" Lakitu will use his fishing pole to get you back on the course but at a price. How many coins does Lakitu take for putting you back on the track?

Answer: two

Coins are used in the game to make the drivers faster. Most of the courses have coins scattered all over the track, there is even an item that will give you two coins. Coins can be lost from falling off the course or by bumping into other drivers. If you have no coins left and get hit by another driver they will cause you to spin.
8. In Mario Grand Prix what place do you have to finish to advance to the next course?

Answer: At least fourth place

At the end of each course in the Mario Grand Prix the top four finishers are rewarded points. Which ever player accumulated the most points throughout the five races wins the gold cup, second place would get silver and third would get the bronze cup.

In each race first place finishers are rewarded nine points, second place six points, third place three points, and fourth place is only rewarded one point. If you finish in fifth or worse you have ranked out and would have to redo the race until you reach the top four.

In "Super Mario Kart" you are given three lives and you lose a life every time you rank out. If you lose all of your lives you would have to restart the entire cup from the first track.
9. How many laps are completed in a single race in "Super Mario Kart"?

Answer: five

Most of the courses in "Super Mario Kart" are relatively short when compared to "Mario Kart 64". Most laps in "Super Mario Kart" take between fifteen and twenty seconds for experienced players while in "Mario Kart 64" it takes between one and two minutes to complete a single lap. Even though the laps are longer in "Mario Kart 64" there are only three laps in a single race in the Nintendo 64 game.
10. What enemies of Mario can be seen on both the Bowser Castle courses and the Rainbow Road?

Answer: Thwomps

Thwomps are dangerous in two ways when playing "Super Mario Kart". They can fall right on top of you squishing you or they can block you while they are on the ground. The thwomps look slightly different on Rainbow Road, they are electrified. Boos can be seen in the background of the Ghost Valley tracks but they are not an obstacle like the thwomps.

There are no bob-bombs or chain chomps in "Super Mario Kart". Chain Chomp is an obstacle on Rainbow Road in "Mario Kart 64".
