Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which game, originally on the Sega Saturn in 1998, was released for Wii by Atlus in North America a decade later?

Answer: Baroque

Developed by Sting Entertainment and published by Atlus, "Baroque" was released in April 2008 on the Wii in North America despite having had many versions of the game released to Sega and Sony consoles for a decade before. A notable point about this RPG is the fact that in order to advance your character, every death adds to the experience as every battle and action. Much like "Fire Emblem", released on Wii the previous year, the game follows a turn-based RPG battle system on a grid.
The game was notable for being unnecessarily difficult (but then, Atlus does have a hardcore fanbase) and as a result received mixed to low scores upon North American release on the Wii.
A "Baroque" manga series tied to the game was released as well. Sting Entertainment also created the DS game "Knights in the Nightmare" in 2009 and "Dokapon Kingdom" for the Wii.
2. Which game for the Wii, whose title literally translates to 'great god', was released in April 2008?

Answer: Okami

Critically renowned for its approach to action-adventure games, "Okami" originally sold on Sony's Playstation 2 as an exclusive, but because of the Wii's motion sensitive capabilities, certain features strongly lent themselves to better gameplay. The Celestial Brush, used by changing to a canvas in the game and directing the Wii Remote to paint a shape or image on the screen (to complete a task or defeat an enemy) is one of the game's many perks, separating it from many others. The game was lauded with positive reviews and due to its popularity as a standalone game, it was released on the Wii in August 2008. Porting developers, Ready at Dawn, also created "God of War: Chains of Olympus" and "Daxter", both exclusive for the PSP.

The original developers, Clover Studios, created the "Viewtiful Joe" series before becoming defunct.

They later merged to create Platinum Games, known for the Wii exclusive "MadWorld" and the PS3 title "Bayonetta".
3. Which Wii game, released in April 2008, was originally known as "Band Mashups"?

Answer: Battle of the Bands

Despite releasing in a genre typically dominated by Harmonix and Activision games and on a system targeted (at the time) towards casual gamers, the people at Planet Moon Studios (who released "Smarty Pants" on the Wii the previous November) created "Battle of the Bands", a game which does not require instruments or talent, but does require the incessant strumming or beating of Wii Remotes.

Much like "Rock Revolution" released later in 2008, the game was both panned by critics, contained a very minimal setlist (mostly remixes...and bad ones at that), and sold poorly. Those who though "Guitar Hero" was simply glorified air guitar would be surprised by this one.
4. "Mario Kart Wii" was released with which add-on peripheral?

Answer: Wii Wheel

Highly anticipated as one of Nintendo's most popular Mario spin-offs, "Mario Kart Wii" was the first "Mario Kart" title to be released on a console since the Gamecube's "Double Dash" offering many years before. Although "Mario Kart Wii" was the first game to be packaged with the Nintendo-brand Wii Wheel, two different Ubisoft racing games released on the system's launch date were the first games to be released with a wheel peripheral included. "Mario Kart Wii" was released in April 2008 earning quite modest scores. Reviewers praised the good control schemes and the welcome return to the series. IGN gave the game its award for 'Best Racing Game' in the year of its release.
5. Steven Spielberg designed which Wii game released in May 2008?

Answer: Boom Blox

A Wii exclusive title, "Boom Blox" gained popularity due to the big name backing the game. Since its release, it has sold over one million copies, becoming one of the more popular games of 2008. Additionally, the game was very well-received by critics, and it earned many awards and high scores.
The point of the game is to destroy...or occasionally prevent the destruction of structures made of blocks. The game's physics engine allows for endless possibilities in the hundreds of levels involved. A sequel, "Boom Blox Bash Party", was released in May 2009 due to the first game's success.
6. "The Dog Island", released in May 2008, was developed by which company?

Answer: Ubisoft

Although Ubisoft typically releases quite high profile games (see "Rayman" and "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell"), "The Dog Island" was fated to dive to the depths of the bargain bin in your local video game store. A swift kick from critics and players alike, "The Dog Island" never really reached its full potential as an RPG/dog-simulation game in which the player takes control of a canine with a mission.

As cute as the game seemed, it was too cartoony to appeal to older players and its simplified missions and collecting quests made it a little too bare-bones.
7. Which May 2008 Wii game was the first to be sold with the Balance Board?

Answer: Wii Fit

"Wii Fit" was a major step forward in terms of casual gaming. Appealing to kids with its fun minigames and adults with its physical fitness workouts, "Wii Fit" was an impressive and unexpected addition to the Wii roster. Sold with the Wii Balance Board, the system could track balance, weight, BMI, and proper technique in order to bring the proper workout or more refined activities. Specializing in strength training, aerobics, and yoga, "Wii Fit" was the most anticipated holiday title of 2008 and sold over twenty million copies in its first year alone.

A sequel, "Wii Fit Plus", was released in late 2009 and many games have since made use of the Wii Balance Board.
8. Which Lego game's "Original Adventures" appeared on shelves in June 2008?

Answer: Lego Indiana Jones

Like many before it, "Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures" got Lego treatment in June 2008 appearing to coincide with the release of the fourth film of the series, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". Players, like in previous games in the series, could switch between numerous different unlockable characters to partake in challenges all around the plots of the "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Temple of Doom", and "The Last Crusade".

In 2009, a second "Lego Indiana Jones" game was released featuring the fourth film and a number of add-on features.

The first game released to modest critical reception.
9. Although this game showed up on other consoles before Christmas the previous year, its Wii version (which featured the otherwise downloadable songs "Dirty Little Secret" and Roxanne") appeared in June 2008. What game is it?

Answer: Rock Band

"Rock Band" has since gone on to sell numerous units consisting of a set of drums, a microphone, and a guitar/bass (though another of these can be added). The original title received the 'Game of the Year' award from numerous publications and perfect scores from many outlets.

Although downloadable content was available for the series before the Wii version's release, the Wii Shop Channel wouldn't be able to get new songs until well after the release of "Rock Band 2" (later in 2008). Sine then, considerable efforts have been set forth and the setlist is available on all systems except the Playstation 2.

In a year of sales, thirty million songs were downloaded from the "Rock Band DLC Store".
10. Critically panned, what survival-horror title was reinvented in June 2008 with a self-titled fifth installment set in New York City?

Answer: Alone in the Dark

With mid-to-low-range reviews, perhaps the only good thing about it (according to fans) was the fact that it wasn't based on Uwe Boll's adaptation, one of the lowest-rated video game adaptations ever made. Although the game had an interesting concept, many believe it was executed wrongly in every aspect and with a bit of tweaking, it would've been an extravagant addition to any survival-horror collection. Regardless, in one year the game sold over one million copies.
This game features a protagonist working his way through New York (ie. Central Park) as demons begin their attack.
