Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Valve Software's "Half-Life 2" (2004), protagonist Gordon Freeman begins his story on a train. He is accompanied by two passengers. One is standing, and one is sitting. From Gordon's perspective right as the user assumes control, is the sitting passenger to Gordon's left or his right?

Answer: Left

Gordon sees these two gentlemen immediately following a disturbing cutscene from the ominous Gman. One remarks that he hadn't seen Gordon get on board (in truth, he was placed there by forces unexplained in the game; the man's confusion was justified).
2. In Midway's "Mortal Kombat" (1992), one stage features a great audience that is backed by a well-decorated throne. What is the name of the sorcerer who sits upon it?

Answer: Shang Tsung

Although the original game didn't outline much story, it was later revealed that the first "Mortal Kombat" was of great importance to Earthrealm. Had Liu Kang not won this tournament, Earthrealm would have been annexed by Outworld! Shao Kahn was the main antagonist of "Mortal Kombat II" (1993), and Kintaro is one of his minions. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung form what is known as the Deadly Alliance in "Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance" (2002 USA).
3. Nintendo's "Mario Kart" has always been about taking the driver's seat. In which game of the series does the player also control a character hanging onto the back?

Answer: Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

This game saw release on the Nintendo GameCube in 2003. Due to different weight class, vehicle, and exclusive item possibilities, choosing the right team of two could greatly affect race results. The next game, "Mario Kart DS" (2005), followed the standard formula of vehicles being operated by only one character.
4. In Rocksteady's "Batman: Arkham Asylum" (2009), the head villain is none other than the notorious Joker. Near the end of the game, he sits upon a throne talking to Scarface, a puppet. What is his throne made of?

Answer: Mannequins

Although he'd never hesitate to kill a man, Joker is content to build his throne out of fake bodies. He sits to patiently await Batman's arrival to the "party" he'd invited him to. This scene happens only moments before the final battle, so I'll avoid saying much more!
5. In Nintendo's "Metroid" (1986), protagonist Samus Aran can find weapon upgrades and abilities in the hands of statues built in seated positions. What are they called?

Answer: Chozo

"Metroid" was hailed at the time of its release for being one of the first games to have branched paths and incredible room to explore. The gameplay style of the "Castlevania" series has been called "Metroidvania" by some due to its adoption of similar level structure after the success of Metroid.
6. Mario can sit down in Nintendo's "Super Mario 64" (1996).

Answer: True

Indeed, if the player remains idle long enough, Mario will yawn and sit down for a nap. If the player waits even longer, he will lay down. Of course, the player won't make very much progress on collecting the game's 120 stars if he or she just watches Mario sleep!
7. In Rockstar/Team Bondi's "L.A. Noire" (2011), who is the first criminal suspect that Cole Phelps sits across from to interrogate at the police station?

Answer: Edgar Kalou

Mr. Kalou murdered a man in cold blood, and Cole Phelps wrenches a confession out of him. Mr. Kalou committed the murder because he felt he was being unfairly treated in the business world by his victim for merely being Jewish.
8. In Interplay's "Earthworm Jim" (1994), Jim must fight a rather fat fellow seated in an unusual machine that carries him along a wire above Jim. In which level does this occur?

Answer: New Junk City

This boss's name is Chuck, and it's more than slightly appropriate. Chuck throws assorted objects at Jim in an attempt to defeat him. Since he is elevated, Jim has to be resourceful. He can use plasma bullets, or he can whip the crates that Chuck throws at him onto a spring. The spring will launch the crate up, and if Chuck is in the right place at the right time, Jim will hit him.
9. In Harmonix's "The Beatles: Rock Band" (2009), players follow the journey of the Beatles from start to finish. As a drummer, Ringo Starr does the most sitting of any of the Fab Four. What is the name of the achievement/trophy the player earns for earning expert gold stars on four specific songs sung by Ringo?

Answer: And the Band Begins to Play

"And the Band Begins to Play" are words taken from "Yellow Submarine", a song Paul McCartney wrote for Ringo to sing. "No One's Frightened of Playing" are lyrics from "I Me Mine", a song George Harrison wrote and sang, and it is the achievement for accomplishing the same feat on four of George's songs. "Better Free Your Mind Instead" are words taken from "Revolution", and it is the title of John Lennon's achievement. "Things That Money Just Can't Buy" are lyrics from Paul McCartney's "Can't Buy Me Love", and, of course, it's the title to his achievement.
10. In Nintendo's "Punch-Out!!" (1987), which fighter sits down on a knockdown or knockout and doesn't lay down completely in defeat?

Answer: King Hippo

King Hippo's two main weaknesses are his sensitive belly and his loose shorts. If player character Little Mac can manage to punch him in his gut, the shorts will fall, and Mac can continue to pummel him until he manages to pull them all the way back up.
