Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the lead ship for the most numerous class of American fleet carriers?

Answer: USS Essex

USS Essex served until 1969, when she was decommissioned in Boston.
2. What British invention enabled aircraft carriers to both launch and recover aircraft simultaneously?

Answer: The angled deck.

The angled deck allowed aircraft that failed to hook a wire to fly off and go around again while another launch was in progress.
3. What is UNREP the acronym for?

Answer: Underway replenishment.

The U.S. Navy made a science of the underway replenishment. Tankers and supply ships could go alongside a carrier and renew stores, while helos could deliver supplies to screening vessels.
4. Why were WWII British aircraft carriers more impervious to bomb damage than American carriers?

Answer: Armored flight decks

British carriers had armored flight decks, while the American practice was to armor the hangar deck. How successful the practice was may be determined by the fact that all subsequent American carrier classes, beginning with the Midway, were given armored flight decks.
5. Who are "grapes" on the flight deck of a carrier?

Answer: Aviation fuel handlers.

The responsibilites of flight deck personnel are determined by the color of their vests/jerseys. Fuel handlers wore purple jerseys, thus the "grapes" appelation.
6. During the 1970 Jordanian Crisis, which U.S. carriers showed the flag in the Eastern Mediterranean?

Answer: USS Independence and USS Saratoga.

During the height of the crisis, helos on the Independence had large American flags painted over the national insignia, and the aircraft were to be tasked with retrieving US citizens from Jordan.
7. What was the primary duty of the SH-3A?

Answer: Anti-submarine warfare.

The SH-3A was equipped with a dipping sonar, and could carry two homing torpedoes. I was an ASAC on the Indy, spent many a watch controlling "Sea Kings".
8. What was the last conventionally-fueled carrier constructed for the U.S. Navy?

Answer: USS John F. Kennedy

Although planned as a nuke carrier, the Kennedy ended up being oil-fired.
9. As built, what was the primary gun armament of the USS Saratoga and USS Lexington, of WWII fame?

Answer: 4 twin 8/55 turrets.

Both carriers were designed with 8" mounts. Since it became obvious that they were useless as AA weapons, both carriers had them removed early in the war.
10. In the context of aircraft carrier operations, what is a JBD used for?

Answer: It deflects afterburner blast away from the flight deck.

Whenever a jet aircraft is positioned for launch, the Jet Blast Deflector is raised to protect other aircraft and personnel from the afterburner blast. It also provided much-appreciated warmth for the lookouts on the island.
