Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Greenland is almost three times larger than any other island that is not a continent. Which is the world's second-largest island?

Answer: New Guinea

Although technically part of Denmark, if considered independently Greenland would be the world's 12th-largest nation. Australia is the world's 6th-largest country and, whilst an island, it is also a continent.

With an area of 303,300 sq miles, New Guinea is the world's second-largest island - about the size of Turkey. The island is shared by Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. Borneo (289,000 sq miles) is shared by Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. With an area of 227,000 sq miles, Madagascar is the world's largest single independent nation island. Is is only marginally smaller than the Ukraine, the largest country wholly within Europe. Baffin Island (196,000 - the size of Spain) is the largest of the Canadian islands.
2. The dalasi is the unit of currency in which small African country?

Answer: The Gambia

The smallest country on the African mainland, The Gambia gained independence from Britain in 1965 and became a republic five years later. The dalasi replaced the Gambian Pound as the country's currency in 1971. There are 100 bututs to 1 dalasi. Curiously, the highest denomination bill in circulation is 100 dalasi, which converted to about £2 (just over $3) in 2012.
3. Begun in 1386 and taking almost six centuries to complete, the cathedral in which European city is today home to the world's largest collection of marble statues?

Answer: Milan, Italy

The Gothic 'Duomo du Milano' is the fourth-largest cathedral in the world (after St Peter's in Rome, the cathedral of Seville, and a new cathedral in the Ivory Coast). Building began in 1386 and it was not finally finished until 1965.
4. Which large flightless bird is native to South America?

Answer: Rhea

The name "rhea" comes from the Greek word for 'ground'. Males can grow to a height of 5'6" and weigh 90 pounds. They have a huge wingspan (up to 8 feet) for a flightless bird, and are spread while running so that they act like sails. Of the alternatives, the cassowary is native to New Guinea and northern Australia, the weka (or woodhen) is a small flightless bird native to New Zealand, and the ostrich can be found only in Africa.
5. The Caribbean region has thousands of islands (an island being defined as having a circumference of more than 100 meters). Which country comprises the greatest number of these individual islands?

The Bahamas territory includes a remarkable 501 islands. Puerto Rico includes a surprisingly high number too - 142. Martinique includes 50 islands and there are 23 islands within Cuban territory.

8. Which city that stands on the banks of France's longest river is the capital of the Loiret department, named for one of the Loire's tributaries?

The mighty Loire river, France's longest, begins as a trickle from beneath the eastern Massif Central in southeastern France. It flows through Roanne, Nevers, Orléans, Tours and Nantes before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Saint-Nazaire. The central part of the Loire Valley, dubbed 'The Garden of France', was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city of Orleans, about 80 miles southwest of Paris, is the capital of both the Loiret department and the Centre region.
