Mike Gravel was originally from Springfield, Massachusetts. His parents were French-Canadian immigrants and he served in the army in West Germany after graduating from Columbia. He moved to Alaska in the 1950's to work in real estate.
2. In what year was Mike Gravel first elected as a U.S. Senator?

Answer: 1968

Mike Gravel got to be the Democratic Senator from Alaska by beating Ernest Gruening in the Democratic Primary. Gruening was one of the two Senators who voted against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which started the major U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
3. What is the title of the book Mike Gravel wrote while he was in the Senate?

Gravel also supported including the U.S. in the Convention on the Law of the Sea. Gravel supported Communist China being admitted to the United Nations and China being diplomatically recognized by the United States.

In the 1980 election, Gravel was defeated in the Democratic Primary by Clark Gruening, the grandson of Ernest Gruening, the man Gravel had defeated in the 1968 Democratic primary. Gruening was defeated in the general election by Republican Frank Murkowski.
