Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I-270 in Maryland runs from Frederick to near Bethesda. Which of the following 2di does it connect with at its northern end?

Answer: I-70

Since it ends in '70', I-270 intersects with I-70.
2. What 3di is the longest?

Answer: I-476 (PA)

It's 129.61 miles, from Philadelphia to Scranton. It used to only be 21 miles, until State Route 9 was redesignated an interstate.
3. What 3di is the shortest?

Answer: I-375 (MI)

It's 1.06 miles long. It goes from I-75 to the Civic Center. The freeway dates back to 1965, but number dates back to 1970 or earlier.

Baltimore's I-395 had been shortest at only 0.72 miles long. But its northern entrance ramps are now considered to be a part of its official length, so it's now 1.98 miles long.
4. What is unique about I-238, in Hayward, CA?

Answer: It doesn't intersect I-38

And the reason it doesn't: there is no I-38! 238 was the state route number for the highway being upgraded to interstate standards. But they had run out of numbers ending in '80'. Another nearby highway, CA 17, got the designation {I-880;} CA 238 became I-238.
5. How many different I-295 segments are there?

Answer: 7

The seven distinct I-295's are in Maine, Massachusetts-Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey-Delaware, DC-Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.
6. Louisville, KY is unique in the nation because of its 2 3di's. How?

Answer: They're consecutively numbered

I-264 and I-265. It just happens that I-64 and I-65 intersect in Louisville.
7. What 3di has a segment that goes through 3 different states (as of September 2000)?

Answer: I-275

At almost 83 miles, I-275 forms a beltway around Cincinnati, OH. Only 2 miles goes through Indiana. Also, the Capital Beltway, I-495, goes through Virginia, Maryland, and the very bottom corner of the District of Columbia. But DC isn't a state.
8. The Long Island Expressway is also designated

Answer: I-495

9. I-395 (VA-DC) is also called this

Answer: Shirley Highway

It was named after Henry G. Shirley, who was the Virginia Highway Commissioner who gave the 'go ahead' for work on the expressway. FYI, Jefferson Davis Highway is the name of US-1 and VA 110 through Arlington, VA, near the Pentagon.
10. Which of these states does NOT have a 3di?

Answer: Alaska

It doesn't even have interstates! Slightly tricky: although Hawaii has no highways that go from state to state, they do have interstate-grade highways funded the same as the contiguous states' interstates. One, I-H1, has a 3di: I-H201.
11. Wyoming's only 3di, I-180, is unique in what way?

Answer: it has traffic light in the middle

It's in Cheyenne. It's not technically a {freeway;} instead, it's a four-lane divided road with two at-grade traffic-lighted intersections.
12. What is the highest-numbered 3di associated with I-5?

Answer: I-805

It's 28.0 miles long. Called the Jacob Dekema Freeway it serves San Diego, paralleling I-5 to the east. Approved as a chargeable interstate route in July 1958. FYI, CA 905 is planned to be redesignated I-905, but not yet.
13. What is the only 3di with all three digits the same?

Answer: I-444

It serves downtown Tulsa, OK. It's the only interstate divisible by 111. If you hate using impersonal numbers, call I-444 by its catchy name -- the Inner Dispersal Loop. Like Texas' I-345, I-444 is not signed. There is a proposal for a I-555 in Arkansas.
14. What's unique about the three-digit interstate highways of I-76?

Answer: They all are in Pennsylvania

There are 5 existing 3-digit variations of I-76: 176, 276, 376, 476, 676. There was once an I-876, but it became I-579 instead.
15. What would be the difference between the theoretical 3di's I-199 and I-299?

Answer: I-199 would only have one end connected to another interstate

3di's starting with 2, 4, 6, or 8 typically start and end at an interstate. 3di's starting with 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 have a 'dangling end' that ends at a state highway or local {street;} e.g., I-395 in DC ends at a stop light on New York Ave NW.
16. How many 2di's (or 1di's) do NOT have 3di's associated with them?

Answer: 20

These are H2, H3, 4, 8 , 12, 17, 19, 24, 27, 37, 39, 43, 49, 57, 66, 68, 73, 86, 88, and 97. The questionable I-99 was left off this list because of its dubious nature as a valid interstate.
17. True or false: All 2di's are longer than all 3di's.

Answer: False

Interstates 19, 86 and 97 are all shorter than 65 miles. I-476 (PA) is 129.61 miles.
18. What will be unique about I-840 (TN) if it's finished to its maximum extent?

Answer: It will be the longest 3di, 50 miles longer than the longest in October 2000

19. What's the number of the Capital Beltway that goes around Washington, DC?

Answer: I-495

It was initially called I-495, with I-95 bisecting it through Arlington and Washington. But in 1977, the final part of I-95 through Washington was {cancelled;} I-95 inside the Beltway was renumbered I-395 and the eastern half of the Beltway was renumbered I-95 so that I-95 would be continuous.

Then in 1993, the whole Beltway was again numbered I-495, with the eastern half having a dual I-95 and I-495 designation.
20. What 3di has the highest number?

Answer: I-990

The Lockport Expressway, a 5 mile spur off I-290 to the Millersport Hwy (NY 263) in the Buffalo suburbs. It's 6.18 miles long.
