Answer: Thomas Dewey

A former governor of New York, Dewey lost to FDR in 1944 and then again to Truman in 1948. Dewey was the heavy favorite in the 1948 race, so much so that the "Chicago Daily Tribune" erroneously published an edition of their paper with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman".

Since no candidate received a majority of electoral votes, the contest was decided by the House of Representatives. After 36 ballots, Jefferson finally won and Burr, finishing second, became his Vice President.

Taft was elected president in 1908 with the support of out-going president Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt at first supported Taft for re-election in 1912, but decided to seek the nomination himself when Taft brought an anti-trust suit against US Steel.

When it became clear that Taft would secure the Republican nomination, Roosevelt hastily formed the Progressive Party and went on to win 27% of the popular vote to Taft's 23%. Roosevelt had become president himself in 1901 upon the assassination of William McKinley. Charles Hughes was the Republican nominee defeated by Wilson in 1916.

Andrew Johnson became President in 1865 following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln but lost the Republican nomination to Horatio Seymour in 1868. John Tyler was elevated to the Presidency following the death of William Harrison in 1841 but lost the Democratic Party nomination to James Polk in 1844.
