We had some wonderful wines from the Alsace-Lorraine region when we were there this summer. I had a local dry white (don't remember which one) but my husband had a sweet white he thought was good. Reply #161. Sep 29 16, 9:39 AM |

Had a bottle of bad wine the other night: Chloe Chardonnay 2014. With all the advances in winemaking, it's rare to encounter a really bad wine nowadays. But this managed it. And at around $12 a bottle, it isn't all that cheap. It does have a beautiful label, though. Reply #162. Oct 31 16, 5:44 PM |

I've never had a bad wine served to me while on holiday in Europe. Those European restauranteurs know what's good. At the supermarket, it's hit and miss. Reply #163. Nov 01 16, 5:04 AM |

I heard the cost of living is high in Australia though some things are more expensive than the U.K and some things are cheaper I believe. It's a pity wine is expensive but I guess beer may be the preferred drink there if the adverts are to be believed. Reply #165. Nov 01 16, 7:42 AM |

Thinking about Europe, we went to the South of France for our honeymoon many years ago and on the first night we ate at a Vietnamese restaurant. The next day we were both ill - food poisoning I guess. At the time I thought it might have been from inadequately re-heated pork but it could have been from the rice as that's notorious for causing illness when re-heated - especially if not kept in a fridge. Anyway we spent the next morning just sitting at a cafe drinking sparkling water for hours because we couldn't move. The waiter was very nice and didn't seem to mind us spending hours there just drinking water. Later that day we were due in Avignon but still feeling ropey on the journey. We ate outdoors at another restaurant and ordered house wine which came in ceramic pitchers. It was rose wine which I don't normally drink but it tasted lovely and though I was worried it might make us feel worse, it actually revived us and we felt much better. From then on I tried always to have some alcohol when eating out as it's sterile isn't it, and in medical settings it's used to kill germs, so I think it kills off any germs in food, as long as they are not too bad. Sorry about referring to Europe so much.I can't talk about the US or Australia I've never been further than Europe because of a fear of flying and a strange fear about not being let back into the U.K. Irrational I know. Reply #167. Nov 01 16, 8:00 AM |

$12 American is about $15.70 Australian. Not expensive, but not plonk, either. Today I tried another Chardonnay which is quite good: Rodney Strong Chardonnay Sonoma County 2014. Nicely balanced and tasty, just lacking depth. Very crisp, with a bit of oak. The style I like. Much better than the Chloe, and cheaper as well. Reply #168. Nov 01 16, 12:49 PM |

Wine, Just the thing over the next few days to blot out thoughts of the US elections and possible consequences. Reply #169. Nov 06 16, 4:11 PM |

My lovely friend Kathy stopped by after she got off work today, and we drank a bottle of La Crema Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2015. Really first-rate stuff, although rather pricey (about $26 a bottle). Perfect Chardonnay profile, albeit a bit light and lacking complexity. Good stuff! On the other end of the spectrum, my local grocery store was featuring Woodwork Chardonnay Central Coast 2013 for $2,99 Really nice, crisp Chard with good varietal character at an unbelievable price. Will buy a case if they have any left next payday. Reply #170. Jan 26 17, 6:14 PM |

This is sort of related to wine. Why is the mediterranean diet considered the healthiest. It includes fish, olive oil and fruit and a variety of vegetables but it's also often accompanied by wine. I've always had a feeling that wine helps to cut through fats. I don't know if that's so but I like a glass when I'm eating meat dishes. I read about some research into the benefits of apple cider vinegar. The researchers were seeking to find out whether the claimed benefits for arthritis were true and found that they were not, but they discovered another benefit, which was that a group that were given a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with 200ml of water to drink before each meal, had improved cholesterol readings compared to a control group that did not drink it. Vinegar is basically sour wine without the alcohol, so I was thinking maybe they have similar benefits. I occasionally drink some apple cider vinegar with water now (when I remember), and the taste has grown on me. (Wine itself is not so good for me now being a diabetic). Reply #171. Because of my healthy lifestyle - a diet of red meat, refined sugar, chocolate, and alcohol - avoidance of exercise and vegetables, and two packs of Marlboros each day, I am in good health and almost never sick. I have no idea if vinegar is good for one's health, but I would not take a chance by consuming it. There is a well known maxim that states: "Wherever you go, you'll see more old drunks than old doctors." I sent my youngest sister three bottles of wine for her birthday today. She is a vegetarian, and seldom well. Reply #172. Feb 02 17, 3:18 PM |

Perhaps you're a winner in the genetic lottery. The men on my Dad's side of the family followed such a diet (except perhaps less chocolate and a few more vegetables) and none of them lives beyond 75 whereas the women (apart from one), lived to the ages of 92, 102, and 105 respectively. I don't think I'll be so lucky. I take after the other side of the family. Reply #173. Feb 02 17, 5:05 PM |

At Xmas some friends brought us gifts. To our surprise they were giving away their stored wine as gifts having decided that neither of them can really drink it anymore. They know their wines so it was good stuff. We were a bit overwhelmed with their generosity but some of it made a lovely accompaniment to our Xmas day meal. The rest we are now storing. Reply #174. Just don't store it too long! Most wine doesn't improve with age, and isn't made for long-term cellaring. Reply #176. Feb 07 17, 11:03 AM |

Tonight I cracked open a bottle of Dark Horse Chardonnay 2015. This is usually about $10 a bottle, but it was on sale for $6.99. Just amazing wine for the price! A little on the light side, but with a flowery, attractive nose. and lots of apple, peach, and pear on the palate. Also a a fair amount of oak and a moderate degree of acidity. Very nice sipping wine, with a true Chardonnay flavor profile. Reply #179. Mar 23 17, 6:35 PM |

A couple of weeks ago, I got what seemed to be an unbelievable offer in the mail: three bottles of wine for $3 - including shipping! I have not had good luck with wine clubs in the past, but for three bucks, what did I have to lose? The wine, from a place called FirstLeaf, arrived yesterday. I opened one of the bottles this evening. It is called Harmonic Bridge 2013 Heirloom Reserve. Not sure what goes into this red blend, but I would guess a lot of Grenache - lots of cherry and strawberry flavors. Really isn't half bad - especially for $1! Reply #180. Mar 20 18, 4:15 PM |
