I had a rather sad thought about age one day. I was travelling on a bus and I looked out of the window and saw a line of people all with grey hair queueing for something. I suddenly though this is my generation, or if not mine, the generation of my siblings, and in a few years time all those people will all be gone. That thought just hit me at the time, but we've been a lucky generation, so can't complain really. Reply #61. Jul 09 18, 4:24 PM |

Sometimes when I've posted something on threads, I get the feeling I've posted the same comment before on a thread. Deja Vu or getting old and forgetting? If anyone notices that I've posted any comment twice please let me know. I don't mean posted twice in a row by accident, I mean more or less said the same thing before. Reply #62. I once reposted not my own joke but someone else's joke in the same thread. Now THAT's embarrassing. Reply #63. Jul 27 18, 3:36 AM |

I've recently had some unexpected surgery, and when my brother came to collect me from the hospital, we went to the drugstore to pick up some prescriptions. While he was in the store, I sat in the car and people-watched. I spied a cute young couple coming out of the store, and they appeared to be welded at the hip and were gazing into each others' eyes. I thought "Oh, how sweet," but the image shattered before my eyes because just at that moment each one reached into their hip pockets and soon both of the young lovers was chatting to other people instead of to each other. Ah, well.....young love just isn't what it used to be. It made me feel old, but at the same time allowed me to realize how lucky my own "young love" days had been. No cell phones! Anne Reply #65. I see that cell phones or mobile phones as we call them here, are addictive for people. I supposed that reveals me as old. Reply #66. Jul 29 18, 4:04 PM |

The strange thing is, as I was walking down the road today I was thinking how would a person from the 18th century react if you transported them to the present and described how it was normal to live now. I imagined they would think it marvellous to have such good healthcare, such good quality and abundant food and to be able to ride around and get to places so quickly in cars and the general standard of living that people have, but I imagined when told about computers and cell phones, they would be amazed but would soon start to miss the personal and social interaction they had in their daily lives - the people they spent time with and the communities they lived within and also the fact that people would have helped each other more in time of trouble and sickness rather than using technology to find help in a more independent and impersonal manner. I liked reading the biography of Dr Johnson, who, when he wasn't working on his dictionary, spent hours drinking tea and chatting to people and went out socialising most days. Reply #67. Mix, I read through the thread at a later date and discovered the joke on an earlier page. Reply #68. Jul 30 18, 4:45 AM |

You know how some companies needing information will have a pre-recorded machine that says something like "enter in your numbers followed by the pound sign"? I was thinking, in the future, maybe they'll change it to "followed by the hashtag sign". Seriously, # has always been the pound/number sign! #IDon'tGetThis Reply #70. Aug 01 18, 8:33 AM |

Skyflyerjen. I've never heard an automated system ask for the pound sign. They always say enter (whatever) followed by the hashtag. Reply #71. Aug 02 18, 2:42 PM |

It may be a Brit-speak/Ameri-speak kind of thing. Like Sky, I've heard 'pound' used... never 'hashtag' on an automated phone tree. Reply #72. Aug 02 18, 3:05 PM |

Isn't it odd that they say 'pound' in the USA but not in the UK, where they say 'hashtag'? I'd never have guessed that. Reply #73. Aug 03 18, 8:01 AM |

Wow, I had no clue there were some automated machines that said "hashtag"! You learn something new every day :) Reply #74. Aug 03 18, 8:53 AM |

The pound sign in the UK isn't this #, it's this £. I still call it an octothorpe, personally. Reply #75. Aug 03 18, 9:05 AM |

Hairy Bear, What is the pound sign in the USA when it's asked for? Surely USA keyboards or cell phones don't have pound signs as a standard key? Reply #76. Oct 17 18, 2:24 AM |

USA keyboards have the pound sign as the secondary symbol under the number 3. On cell phones (at least mine) the pound sign is on the bottom right of the keypad. The bottom row is the star symbol *, 0, and #. Reply #77. Oct 17 18, 10:01 AM |

When I get old age type aches and pains I usually exercise that body area and more often than not the ache goes away. The worst thing to do is to stop being active. Reply #79. Oct 17 18, 11:47 AM |

Yeah... it's odd. My mom hurt her knee, doctors still can't figure out exactly what happened, but she has to have physical therapy. I am baffled that the treatment for pain... is using the part of your body that hurts... over and over again. Reply #80. Oct 18 18, 10:58 AM |
