Family Circus
Bil Keane. Bil Keane has said that he dropped the second "L" in his name "to be different."
1960. When the strip first began, it was titled "The Family Circle," but the magazine "Family Circle" complained, so the strip was renamed "The Family Circus." It debuted in February 1960.
4. Bil Keane and his wife had 5 children who served as the inspiration for the kids in the strip. The cartoon characters are named: Billy, Dolly, Jeffy, and P.J.; Mr. Keane's son Jeff is the only one who has a character named after him. Mr. Keane's other children are: Gayle, Neal, Glen, and Christopher.
Billy. Billy is the eldest child in the strip. Sometimes when Bil Keane is "on vacation," Billy sits in and draws the strip for him.
Not Me and Ida Know. When Mommy and Daddy find things amiss and they ask the children who is responsible, the kids will often say, "Not Me!" or "Ida Know!" The reader of the cartoon will see little ghosts in the panel.
Barfy and Sam. The family also has a cat named Kittycat.
