Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

    Rodda, Emily

What is the gem hidden in the Lake of Tears?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

Ruby. The Ruby is the symbol for happiness, and pales in the presence of evil.

Until when must the giant guard the bridge?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

When truth and lies are one. All who pass must answer the giant's question. Lief manages to not only save himself, but make truth and lies one. (He made a paradox.)

What look was on Jasmine's face as she stepped forward to take the giant's challenge?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

pity. Jasmine pitied the man, who was actually a bird bespelled by Thaegan.

What number was the correct answer to Lief's question?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

      106. There were 104 that Lief almost answered, but he forgot to add Thaegan. Then he answered 105, but the answer was 106, because Thaegan's favorite food was a raven swallowed whole.

What can the Ralad not do under Thaegan's spell?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

Speak. The ancient race, the Ralad, had been bespelled by Thaegan (who seems to enjoy bespelling people) so that they couldn't talk. When Thaegan died, all of her spells were undone.

When Barda, Jasmine, and Lief had just rescued the Ralad man, what did the half of the sign that Lief found say?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

Ring And Enter. The sign was only half, and the full sign said, "Warning! Ring of Quicksand. Do Not Enter"

What was special about the way "Nij" and "Doj" talked?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

They talked backwards. "Nij" and "Doj" were really Jin and Jod, children of Thaegan. They had a spell on them that made them seem nice. Everything they said was backwards, but Lief, cleaning the Topaz which clears the mind, understood them.

Why was Lief confused by the gem?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

Because it was pink. Lief tried to remember which gem was pink, when he remembered that the Ruby paled in the presence of evil.

What did Kree do to kill Thaegan?Emily Rodda: "The Lake of Tears"

He cut her pinky. The only unprotected part of Thaegan was the pinky she did magic with. Kree couldn't stab her through the heart because Thaegan was protected by spells. I got the part about eating out the liver from a Greek myth about Prometheus giving fire to the humans and as punishment, Prometheus was chained to a mountain where an eagle ate out his liver every day. Kree has no magical powers that we know of. I hope you enjoyed my second quiz!

How old was Lief in the beginning of Part Two of "The Forest of Silence"?Emily Rodda: The Forests of Silence

sixteen. It was Lief's sixteenth birthday and he was strangely rescued from a Gray Guard.

What is the name of the blacksmith Jarred met as he left the castle?Emily Rodda: The Forests of Silence

Crian. Jarred stays and becomes "smitten" with Crian's daughter. He becomes the blacksmith after Crian dies, and sires Lief. (Or does he?)

What are the names of the two animals that live with Jasmine in the forest?Emily Rodda: The Forests of Silence

Filli and Kree. Filli, the rodent-like creature, and Kree, the crow, both lived with Jasmine.

What was Gorl protecting?Emily Rodda: The Forests of Silence

Lillies of Life. Gorl killed anyone who tried to steal the Lillies of Life, even his own brothers. However, the Lillies of Life never bloomed until Gorl died.

What is the sign of the Shadow Lord?Emily Rodda: The Forests of Silence

A hand. In the beginning of Part Two, Lief is in the backyard of a pottery and sees the sign. There's even a picture of it!

Which relative of Jasmine's appeared from the Topaz?Emily Rodda: The Forests of Silence

Her mother. Jasmine's mother told Jasmine to leave the Forests and join Lief and Barda in their quest. Without Jasmine, the quest would have been lost many, many times.

What letters were entered in the code that Endon and Jarred sent to each other?Emily Rodda: The Forests of Silence

EL. They talk about the secret code in the beginning. The note said "Del onel o telgel o telo tel hele kel itel cel hele nel sel mel i neli sel telhel e rele." Which, taking out the EL's said "Do not go to the kitchens. Min is there." I hope you enjoyed my quiz. I'll have the other quiz for the books out soon!

Who says "Equal shares" when the children of Thaegan catch Lief, Barda, and Jasmine?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Hot and Tot. Fie and Fly say "No", Jin and Jod are dead, and Ichabod wants it all for himself. Hot and Tot say, "Equal shares", until Ichabod knocks their heads together. I always think of Hot and Tot saying, "Equal shares" in a really high voice, but that's just me.

Which monster was left standing after the fight over eating Jasmine, Barda, and Lief?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Ichabod. The "Dreaded Ichabod" was the only one left standing after the fight of Thaegan's children over the pieces of Lief, Barda, and Jasmine.

What was Filli's favorite treat?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Honeycomb. This was a really small part, but when Jasmine, Barda, and Lief crossed the border from Thaegan's lands, there was a small paragraph on eating food the Ralads gave them.

In Tom's shop, what could the plates do?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Clean themselves. Among many other amazing inventions at Tom's shop, there was a plate that could clean itself.

How much did Barda pay for the muddlets in the end?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Eighteen gold coins. "'Eighteen!' he said. 'with saddles and bridles thrown in.'"

What was the name of Lief's muddlet?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Noodle. "After some discussion, Jasmine took Zanzee, Lief took Noodle, and Barda took Pip."

In the city of Noradz, what was the color the Ra-Katcher wore?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Red. The Ra-Katcher was really the Rat Catcher, in the city of rats.

In the city of rats, what did Lief think the goblet was made out of?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Silver. Lief didn't recognize that the goblet was the same as the one in No-Radz at first. Lief wasn't certain that the goblet was silver, because it was; "Stained and tarnished with age and neglect."

What was Reeah?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

A snake. Reeah held the Opal in its crown. Reeah started out as a "Tender worm" but grew with the rats the ratcatchers fed it.

Besides seeing into the future, what else does the Opal stand for?Emily Rodda: "The City of Rats"

Hope. "So now we have the Topaz for faith, the Ruby for happiness, and the Opal for hope."

How many apples did Lief, Jasmine, and Barda eat?Emily Rodda: "The Shifting Sands"

Six. They took nine, and ate six, and had three left.

Who were the guards of the apple orchard?Emily Rodda: "The Shifting Sands"

Bees. The bees had been riding on the old woman's shawl. "My guards are small, but many, and act with one mind."

What was the most coins someone could win in the beat the bird game? (Not counting the one they used to play.)Emily Rodda: "The Shifting Sands"

Ten. On the chart, you could see a ten as the highest. "Why, you could win five, six, or TEN silver pieces. Ten silver coins for one!"

What was Jasmine's false name at the Champion Inn?Emily Rodda: "The Shifting Sands"

Birdie. When asked their names, Barda came up with really absurd names, but they somehow relate to their real names, except for Berry. (Twig=Lief or "Leaf", Jasmine talks to birds=Birdie)

What were the words of the note, when someone took their key at the Champion Inn?Emily Rodda: "The Shifting Sands"

Do not try to win tomorrow or you will regret it!. Above the note was a skull. Jasmine had stabbed the intruder, and there were little drops of blood on the carpet.
