| Alright. Let's start with some basics. Russia is by far the largest country in area, followed by Canada, China and the US, respectively. Which is the NINTH largest? | World Facts and Figures

Kazakhstan. A rather large (at 2,717,000sq km) and sparsly populated country, once a former member of the Soviet Union. Will probably enter the news sometime in the future due to its combination of vast natural resources (notably oil and gas) and harsh government.
Germany. It's Germany with 82 million, followed by France at almost 61 million, the UK at 59 million, and Italy at over 57 million.
Yemen. It's Yemen with just over 50% of its population. That's what I call a baby boom.

Latvia. Again, as with the previous question, I see a geographic trend, this time in Eastern Europe. However, it's not as profound as the near two to one ratio in favor of the ladies in the UAE. That doesn't seem right.

VCR. 89.9 per every 100 homes (who knew?). I'm not sure what year this is from (sorry). Guess they really love their movies up there. The US and UK were not far behind.

Mozambique. Have you ever noticed that Madagascar appears to "fit" into Mozambique? This is because that millions of years ago, all the continents were part of one continent, called Pangaea. This is why South America and Africa appear to "fit" into each other as well.

Green. For those of you who don't know, Libya is located in the northern part of Africa, bordering Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Chad, Niger, and Sudan.

f. One syllable countries are Chad, Greece, France, Laos, and Spain. Only two of these border each other, France and Spain. Wales also is one syllable long.
Five. The five states that border the Pacific Ocean are California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. In comparison, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, a little bit of New Hampshire, and Maine all touch the Atlantic Ocean. The Gulf of Mexico is considered part of the Atlantic Ocean.
Texas. This Colorado River starts in northwestern Texas and winds southeast to the Gulf of Mexico. It is the 18th largest river in the United States and its drainage basin encompasses central Texas and parts of New Mexico.
Murrumbidgee. The Murrumbidgee River is the second longest river in Australia, following the Murray River. The Lachlan is the fourth largest, located in New South Wales, and meets with the Murrumbidgee.
Albania. The Strait of Otranto also links the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Croatia and Montenegro are separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea and Malta is separated from Italy by the Mediterranean Sea.
Heilongjiang. Heilongjiang, along with Liaoning, Jilin, and parts of Inner Mongolia (Nei Mongol), make up the industrial region of Dongbei, or Manchuria, that was established in 1932 and dissolved into China at the end of World War II. "Black Dragon River" refers to the Amur River, which makes most of China's northeastern border with Russia. This river is the eighth largest in the world.
Guayaquil. Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador. In terms of population, Cali, Medellin, and Barranquilla are second, third, and fourth largest cities in Colombia, in that order, after Bogota, the capital. Cartagena is the next most populous city after Barranquilla.
Africa. St. Helena is a British overseas territory. Napoleon was exiled there from 1815 to 1821. It is west of Angola and Namibia and claims to be the second oldest British colony.

Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world by area. It borders quite a few other countries, including Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Russia, and Turkmenistan. Interestingly, it borders two of the top three largest countries in the world (by area)!

Caspian Sea . The Caspian Sea is the biggest lake in the world in terms of area. Interestingly, this lake is saltwater, not freshwater. The five countries it touches are: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. The Caspian Sea is one of the few lakes that stick out on a map.

Iran. Iran is the 18th-largest country in the world by area. Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East. Libya is not considered part of the Middle East, although it is the 17th-largest country in the world by area, just barely bigger than Iran. Afghanistan is too small to be the second-biggest--it's 41st on the list of all countries by area.

Uzbekistan. On the eastern side of Uzbekistan's border with Kazakhstan lies the Aral Sea. This lake is rapidly declining in volume. The reason for this is because the former Soviet government used water flowing into the lake for irrigation purposes. This is also the reason the lake is very salty.

Ukraine. Ukraine is the largest all-European country by area, the fourth-largest country by area with any land in Europe (after Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey), and the third-largest by area of the former members of the Soviet Union. Ukraine is the 44th-largest country in the world.

Belarus. In the 20th century, four out of six times a man from Russia was the Executive Secretary of the CIS. However, Ivan Korotchenya was the Executive Secretary twice, from 1991-1998, and part of the year 1999. He was, of course, from Belarus.

Afghanistan. The currency of Pakistan is rupee, the currency for Tajikistan is somoni, and the currency for Kyrgyzstan is som (also called 'sum' or soum'). That leaves only Afghanistan, whose currency is afghani.

Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan is the 53rd-largest country in the world. It's located in the Middle East, and borders the Caspian Sea, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan. Some facts you may not know are that Turkmenistan is the fourth-largest former Soviet country, and the southern-most country in CIS.
