Swedish. Nobel Prizes are internationally recognised awards given to individuals on December 10 each year. Categories they cover include physics, chemistry, literature, medicine, peace and economics. No more than three people can share in any of the categories at a time. Born in Sweden in 1833, the chemist, engineer and inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896, accumulated a fortune from his many inventions during his lifetime. The most famous of these, rather unfortunately, was dynamite. In 1888, while still very much alive, Nobel was aghast to read in a newspaper that he had died, and to see himself described him as "The Merchant of Death". He was so devastated by this that he altered his will so that his fortune, upon his genuine death, was used to fund a series of awards to people who had brought about "the greatest benefit to mankind".
United Nations. The two-fold purpose of United Nations Day is to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of the Charter of the United Nations, and to promote the aims and achievements of that worldwide organisation. This momentous Charter came into force on 24 October 1945 at the conclusion of the Second World War. Included in the list of the important work the UN deals with worldwide is the monitoring of international law applicable to all countries, the investigation of, and mediation between, countries in dispute with one another, the handling of international military, economic and diplomatic issues, the application of force if necessary in intervening in international disputes, the chairing of the international court of justice, the promotion of social equality everywhere, the speedy dealing of human rights issues, and, most importantly of all, the working towards the establishment of a permanent world peace.
Yes. This annual day began in the Caribbean in 1999 and has been celebrated each year since in over sixty countries worldwide, with more yet to acknowledge the importance of this day. According to UNESCO, its focus is on male health issues, on highlighting contributions to humanity made by men everywhere, on improving relations between male and female with the promotion of gender equality, and, perhaps more than anything, on stressing the importance of positive male role models for young men and boys to emulate.

Attack on Pearl Harbour. National Pearl Harbour Remembrance Day was created to honour the memory of those who lost their lives during the Japanese air attack on the United States base, Pearl Harbour, on 7 December, 1941. In the horrifying overall tally of lives lost during the Second World War, this figure of 3,500 American citizens either dead or wounded during this attack would not appear to be high on paper, but the reaction to this onslaught was to prove far, far deadlier. Its immediate effect was to draw the United States into this global battle with an incredibly powerful vengeance.

Teachers. World Teachers' Day has been celebrated each year world wide since 1994. The day is designed to raise awareness and appreciation of the vital part that teachers play in the lives of children and adults of every land. An educated country is a country that faces the future with hope and enthusiasm. This international day to mark the powerful contribution that teachers make to the everyday life of individuals everywhere is now celebrated in over one hundred countries all over the world. Hopefully, one day, every boy AND girl on our globe will have access to the potential to improve their lives that education provides.
Andrew. Saint Andrew's Day is a great occasion each year in Scotland. It is celebrated all over the country as a national holiday filled with special events all with a Scottish theme. These include Scottish dance, the glorious sound of the bagpipes (deafening at close range), storytelling, street parties, songs, and Scottish cooking. One presumes that also includes haggish, a dish most associated with that country. The Scottish government also flies the Scottish flag on all buildings on this day now, having refused to fly the British Union Jack since 2002. These ever increasing rumblings of Scottish nationalism will undoubtedly continue to play an ever increasing part in that country's history in the future.

World AIDS Day. Created by the World Health Organisation in 1987, the purpose of the international World AIDS Day was, and is, to raise awareness about the massive spread of this terrible illness which has killed so many. Millions more people live with its effects every day. Despite improved treatments and knowledge about AIDS, it still continues its silent deadly work. In 2007 alone, more than two million died from the illness, a figure which, horrifyingly, included almost 300,000 innocent, vulnerable children.

Germany. German Unity Day marks the anniversary of the reunification of Germany in 1990.
At the same time, some state that it also commemorates the original unification of Germany in 1871. Prior to that, Germany had consisted of a large number of sovereign states, but under the leadership of the Prussian politician Otto von Bismarck the new nation was declared in Versailles following the defeat of the French by the Prussians in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.

World Diabetes Day. This important date, marked on November 14 every year, promotes awareness of the grim disease, diabetes. Described in its simplest form, this means that anyone with the condition has great difficulty in controlling their insulin and blood sugar levels. Because it is one of the unseen illnesses, in that its symptoms do not immediately leap to the eye of the observer, diabetes is regarded by many as not as serious as it really is, when, in fact, it is potentially deadly. It is treated with a combination of insulin, strictly monitored helpings of suitable foods, diet, exercise and sensible living. Should, however, blood sugar levels or the body's insulin levels be thrown out of balance by stress, excitement, the odd forbidden snack, or any other manner of issues that upset this finely teetering apple-cart, a life-threatening situation can and often does develop for many individuals with the illness. If this happens, immediate medical intervention is required.
This annual day was originated in 1991 by the World Health Organisation, following an alarming rise in figures for people suffering from diabetes all over the world. Though many people contributed to its discovery, that particular day was chosen because it is the birthday of the Canadian scientist, Frederick Banting, who has gone down in history as the primary discoverer of manufactured insulin, the drug that is imperative in the treatment of severe diabetes.
World Animal Day. World Animal Day began in Italy in 1931. A convention of ecologists who met in the beautiful city of Florence in that year kicked it off. It celebrates animal life on our planet in all its wonderful and varied forms. That date in October was chosen as it is also the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, the environment, and one of the two major saints of Italy. World Animal Day however cuts across all faiths, and is marked each year by people from every religious background right around the globe.
