Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Gabaldon, Diana
The 1700's. The book begins in 1945, and then Claire winds up in Scotland in the year 1743.
She walks into an ancient Druid stone circle. Claire accidently walks into a stone circle. She feels as if she is being torn apart and faints. When she comes to, she realizes that things look a lot different.
Frank. Jamie becomes her husband in the past. Is it adultery she wonders, if Frank hasn't been born yet? This is a dilemma she faces through most of the first book.
Brianna. Before Jamie sends Claire back in time, he asks her to name the baby after his father, Brian. Since she has a girl, she names her Brianna.
Geillis Duncan. Claire meets Gellis (Geilie) in the 1700's and finds out that she is from 1969. They meet in different eras in the first three books.
Colonial America. Claire and Jamie settle in North Carolina. This is while America was still a British Colony, so I'm sure the next book in the series will deal with the Revolutionary War.
May 1, 1721. There is some dispute over this, because conflicting years are inferred in different books. I posed the question to Herself (Diana Gabaldon), and her reply was that Jamie's birth year is 1721, despite the discrepancies. Also, in book five "The Fiery Cross," Jamie celebrates his 50th birthday on May 1, 1771.
Alexander Malcolm. From Book III: "Voyager". Alexander Malcolm are two of Jamie's middle names. (James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser; as if you had forgotten!)
Geillis Duncan. From Book III: "Voyager."
Cross Stitch. Also the working title of "Outlander", meant to be a play on idiom "stitch in time".
MacRannoch. From Book I: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch").
Aunt. Books I and IV: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch") and "Drums of Autumn".
hyacinth. From Book II: "Dragonfly in Amber". Jamie also has a very bad non-allergic reaction to the scent of lavender, thanks to Jonathan Randall.
Elizabeth. Book I: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch") I'm pretty sure Claire only mentions her middle name once, when she marries Jamie. (And, of course, this information can also be found in "The Outlandish Companion" a.k.a. "Through the Stones".)
A wooden snake. Book I: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch"). "Sawny" is a pet name derived from Jamie's second name, Alexander. The snake was given to him by his older brother, William.
Ian Murray. Book I: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch"). Jamie thought Jonathan had sired his nephew, but it turned out to be Jenny's husband, Ian.
Beltane. Book I: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch"). Beltane is around the beginning of May. Jamie would just have turned 23 when she "passed".
ship. The ship Jamie and Claire sail on to save Young Ian is called the "Artemis". Artemis is the Greek equivalent to the Roman goddess, Diana.
Laoghaire MacKenzie. From Book IV: "Drums of Autumn".
Alexander Randall. From Book II: "Dragonfly in Amber". Jonathan Randall is the person Frank thinks is his ancestor - Alexander Randall is Frank's genealogical ancestor.
Permission to beg. From Book I: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch") Hugh Munro has four of them.
Sassenach. From all books.
Bouton. From book II: "Dragonfly in Amber". Also known affectionately as "Monsieur le dishcloth".
French. All books. The Fraser clan motto is "Je Suis Prest".
40. From Book I: "Outlander" ("Cross Stitch"). When Claire "curses" Randall with the foreknowledge of the date of his death, she gives his birthdate of September the third, 1705. Since we know that he died in the Battle of Culloden (April 16th, 1746), it is easy to figure out that Randall died five months short of his 41st birthday.
Lady North-facing. From Book II: "Dragonfly in Amber".
William, 9th Earl of Ellesmere. Ian and William were trying to remove a rattlesnake from the privy.
We don't know. Brianna doesn't know if the baby is Roger's or Stephen's.
Ulysses. Ulysses was born free, but was claimed as a slave when his mother died. He was then sold to a travelling school teacher, who named him Ulysses and taught him to read and write. Hector Cameron bought him when the teacher died and gave him to Jocasta when she became blind.
The "Gloriana". Moray Firth is where she sailed from, "Phillip Alonzo" was the ship Brianna sailed on with Lizzie, and "Artemis" was the ship Jamie and Claire sailed on when they went in search of Young Ian.
Jamie Murray, her cousin. At the time, Jamie and Claire Fraser and Jocasta Cameron were in America, although Bree must have met someone prior to Young Jamie, from whom she procured her horse, Brutus.
