Special Sub-Topic: 10 Degrees of Dick Butkus

Dick Butkus and Chicago Bears owner/coach George Halas have much in common. Which statement below is false?

They both played linebacker during their professional careers. Halas played offensive end, not linebacker, for the Decatur (Ill.) Staleys and Chicago Bears. He also was the team head coach, handled ticket sales, and was in charge of almost all business aspects of the team.

In 1946, Chicago Bear coach George Halas drafted Heisman Trophy quarterback Johnny Lujack from Notre Dame. Name the state where Lujack was born?
Pennsylvania. Lujack was born on January 25, 1925, in Connellville PA. He joins Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, and Jim Kelly as Hall of Fame quarterbacks from Western Pennsylvania.

Quarterbacks Johnny Lujack (1943) and John Huarte (1964) were Heisman Trophy winners from Notre Dame. Which team drafted Huarte in the second round of the 1965 AFL Draft?
New York Jets. Huarte was drafted by the Jets but never played for them. He first played for the Boston Patriots (1966-67) before moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles (1968), Kansas City Chiefs (1970-71) and Chicago Bears (1972).

Quarterback John Huarte and WR/Placekicker Gino Cappelletti were teammates with the Boston Patriots. Which college did Cappelletti attend?
The University of Minnesota. Cappelletti began his career in the Canadian Football League (1955-59) before joining the Patriots in 1960. From 1960-70, he was the Patriots all-time leading scorer with 1,130 points (42 TD's, 176 FG's, and 342 PAT's) until 2005 when he was passed by Adam Vinatieri.

In the 1963 AFL Championship Game, Gino Cappelletti's Boston Patriots met the John Hadl led San Diego Chargers. What was the final score of the game?
Chargers 51 - Patriots 10. During the pre NFL-AFL merger years (1960-69), the Chargers 51 points are the most points scored in the AFL Championship game. The Chargers were 1-4 and the Patriots were 0-1 in AFL Championship games.

From 1984-85, John Hadl was head coach and Steve Young was quarterback of which USFL team?
Los Angeles Express. After the USFL went bankrupt following the 1985 season, Young played for the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1985-86) before joining the San Francisco 49ers in 1987.

In Super Bowl XXIX in Miami, San Francisco 49ers QB Steve Young threw 6 TDs. How many were thrown to WR Jerry Rice?
    3. Rice caught TD passes of 44, 15, and 7 yards. Young's other TD passes were to RB William Floyd (5 yards) and RB Ricky Waters (2 TDs: 51 and 8 yards).

For which NFL team did WR Jerry Rice catch his last NFL pass, and RB Franco Harris have his last NFL rushing carry?
Seattle Seahawks. After 16 seasons with the 49ers Rice joined the Raiders in 2001. In 2004, he played 4 games for Oakland before joining Seattle for 13 games, catching 25 passes for 362 yards. In 1984, after 12 seasons with the Steelers, Harris rushed for 170 yards in his final and only season with Seattle.

Pittsburgh Steeler teammates Franco Harris and Lynn Swann have much in common. Which statement below is false?
Both were college All-Americans. Swann in 1973 was an All-American WR at the University of Southern California. Harris attended Penn State, which had one All-American in its 1971 backfield, but it was Lydell Mitchell, not Franco.

During their NFL careers, Dick Butkus and Lynn Swann have many things in common. Which statement below is false?
They both appeared on the PBS television show Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Butkus (Chicago Bears) and Swann (Pittsburgh Steelers) played for only one team during their NFL careers, and both are in the College Football Hall of Fame. Despite only playing in the 1970s from 1970-73, Butkus still made the All-Decade Team. He is also on the 1960s All-Decade team. Of the two, only Swann visited with Mr. Rogers.
