Fun Trivia: C : Cats and Dogs for Kids

Special Sub-Topic: A Breed Apart

This dog generally has very short legs and a long body. Purebreds should not have any white patches of fur at all!

Dachshund. Dachshunds have been nicknamed "sausage dogs" due to their long round bodies. They are generally considered to be lively and intelligent pets but require lots of constant attention!

A medium- to large-sized breed, this dog is mostly noted for its black fur and brown spots located just above the eyes and on the underside of the body.
Doberman Pinscher. Doberman Pinschers can make excellent pets to those willing to put in a lot of time and training. They are also often used as guard dogs due to their lack of fear and protectiveness of their owners.

This breed is most commonly compared to a teddy bear! They have fluffy fur, big eyes and a purple tongue.
Chow Chow. The Chow Chow was originally bred for hunting and protection purposes, but due to their sweet appearance they have been relatively popular pets for some time.

These tiny lapdogs are mostly known for their very large ears.
Papillon. "Papillon" is actually French for "butterfly". The breed gets its name from the fact that their ears are very large and spread out to the sides, much like a butterfly's wings.

The most common variety of this breed has a tan coat with grey markings around the mouth and ears. They tend to weigh between only 12 and 20 pounds!
Border Terrier. Border Terriers are often recommended to people with mild allergies as they are low shedding dogs less likely to irritate sufferers. They used to be known as Reedwater Terriers.

Named after a state in Mexico, this small dog has a reputation for being very snappy and is often likened to a rat.
Chihuahua. Chihuahuas can tend towards being rather highly strung but with the right owner they can make highly intelligent and loyal pets.

This Canadian dog can reach a weight of 150 pounds! Mostly they are black or white with patches covering their long fur.
Newfoundland. Newfoundlands were originally bred to work with fishermen and were excellent at helping save victims of shipwrecks. Due to its calm nature the Newfoundland has become a popular family pet.

These dogs often have breathing problems due to their very, VERY short muzzle. They mustn't be over-exercised as their short legs support a lot of weight.
Bulldog. Bulldogs are often accused of being grumpy dogs due to their sour expression, but they actually make rather great family pet as they are quite docile and easygoing.

These giant dogs are jet black in colour, with white markings on their nose and chest and brown markings on their muzzle, feet and above the eyes.
Bernese Mountain Dog. The Bernese mountain dog dates back at least 2000 years and almost died out in the 1800s but quickly became popular amongst new dog owners due to their high level of intelligence and gentle nature.

Now for a slightly different description. What breed of dog is Snoopy (from the cartoon strip "Peanuts"), despite having the incorrect colour markings for such a breed?
Beagle. Snoopy is a white dog with black ears, whereas Beagles are mostly commonly tri-colored with black, tan and white on their face, back and tails. Incidentally the first time Snoopy was referenced as being a Beagle in the comic strip, he denied it! But he went on to accept his breed even serving for a while as "Head Beagle," the dog apparently in charge of all other dogs in the world.
