Douglas Nicholls. Joe Johnson was the first aboriginal to play VFL football. He played in Fitzroy's 1904 and 1905 Premiership Teams. Tom Dancey was the second aboriginal to win the Stawell Gift (1910). Graham "Polly" Farmer played for Geelong in the 1960s and is in both the VFL/AFL and Indigenous Teams of the Century.

The first tied Grand Final was in 1948 between Melbourne and Essendon with Melbourne winning the replay. Who was the central umpire in both of these two games?

Jack McMurray Jnr. McMurray Jnr officiated in 216 games (1941-1955) including 4 other Grand Finals. McMurray Snr. was the first umpire to officiate in VFL 300 games. He umpired from 1917-1936. Harry Beitzel umpired from 1948-1960 for 153 games. Alan Nash officiated in 114 games from 1950 - 1959.

How did Jack Dyer (Richmond) receive the nickname "Captain Blood"?

Based on an Errol Flynn movie of the same name. John Ludlow (cartoonist) drew a picture of Dyer as a pirate in 'The Age' newspaper in 1935. This was based on Dyer's hardman style of play and nicknamed after an Errol Flynn movie called "Captain Blood" which was being shown in Melbourne at that time.

I also coached Essendon and Melbourne. My older brother played 133 games for another VFL club and in one season won their Best & Fairest. Who am I?

Jack Baggott. Jack's older brother Ron, won Melbourne's B & F in 1940. Brothers Lou and Ron Richards both played for Collingwood and both played in the 1953 Premiership team. Don Cordner had 3 brothers (Dennis, Ted and John) who all played for Melbourne. Les Hughson played 73 games of VFL football for 5 different clubs(none of them was for Richmond). Les's brother Fred, played 164 games for Fitzroy, won the club's B & F in 1943 and was Captain-Coach in Fitzroy's last Premiership Team in 1944.

Gordon Coventry. Gordon Coventry was also the first to kick 100 goals in a season and to achieve 1,000 career goals. Jack "Skinny" Titus (Richmond) kicked 970 goals in his career (294 games). Bill Mohr (StK) kicked 735 goals in 195 games. Bob Pratt (SM) kicked 681 goals in 158 games. All of these players made their name in the 1920s and 1930s and all have won the VFL Goal Kicking Award at least once. Of the four mentioned, Bob Pratt had the best goals per game ratio 4.31.

When they played their last games Jack Leith was 39 yrs and 296 days, Craig Bradley was 38 yrs and 291 days and Michael Tuck was 38 yrs and 95 days (the 10th oldest player).

Brian Mynott (England - St. Kilda). Brian Mynott played 210 games, La Fontaine (171), O'Halloran (142) and Vinar (132). The top three AFL/VFL games played by those born outside of Australia are- Peter Bell (Sth. Korea- Fre/NM-286 games), Wayne Schwass (NZ-NM and Sydney - 282 games) and Alex Jesaulenko (Austria-CAR/StK-279 games).

Which of these players played the most VFL/AFL games without scoring a goal?

Ted Potter (COLL). Ted Potter played 182 games for Collingwwod and never scored a goal. Ian Synman played 154 games for St.Kilda without scoring a goal. Bruce Doull played 356 games but scored 22 goals and John Scarlett played 212 games for 44 goals.

The Footscray 1961 Grand Final side must have been one of the most inexperienced sides to compete for the Premiership. There were only two players with over 80 VFL games to their names including this match. Captain-Coach Ted Whitten was one with 184 games, who was the other "veteran" playing his 82nd game?

Alex Gardiner. This match was Schultz's 69th, Hoilles 63rd and Jillard's 47th. If you deduct Whitten and Gardiner the average games of the other 18 players was 36 VFL games. Surprisingly, Hawthorn had only 4 players over 80 games, but their total games average was 51.

I captained my club and played in 2 premiership teams. My brother Peter, played for St.Kilda and he won a Brownlow Medal during WWII in unusual circumstances. I also starred as Ned Kelly in the film "The Glenrowan Affair" and was once suspended by the tribunal for 8 weeks for elbowing an opponent. Who am I?

Bob Chitty (CAR). Bob Chitty played in the 1938 and 1945 Carlton Premiership Teams, the latter as captain. The film was made in 1951 and he received the 8 weeks for elbowing Bill Williams (SM) in the 1945 Grand Final. Peter Chitty won his Brownlow Medal in Changi Prison Camp for the B & F in the Changi Football League. The former Fitzroy Brownlow Medalist, Wilfred "Chicken" Smallhorn (also a POW) was one of the organisers of the league. Dyer, Coventry and Smith were all Premiership players but none of them had the distinction of appearing as Ned Kelly.
