    extraordinary. Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was hugely successful during his lifetime in popularizing science and championing rational thinking. One of his most celebrated books is "The Demon-Haunted World", in which he stresses the importance of skepticism and explains the scientific method.

    create. Clarke (1917-2008) was a celebrated British sci-fi writer. His most well-known work is "2001: A Space Odyssey."

    coincides with their own desires. Anthony (1820-1906) was an American rights activist who fought determinedly for women's suffrage. When in 1872 she cast a vote in the presidential election, she was arrested and found guilty in court. She never paid the fine.

    Mother Goose. Darrow (1857-1938) was the great American lawyer who defended Scopes in the Monkey Trial of 1925. Scopes was charged with teaching evolution in school. Despite Darrow's efforts and oratorical skills, Scopes was found guilty.

    not understanding the world. Dawkins (b. 1941) is a prominent British evolutionary biologist, and is frequently accused of being a "militant atheist." In 2006 he published the book "The God Delusion." Within, he argues that it is offensive to assign children religious affiliations - a child cannot be "Christian" or "Muslim" any more than they can be "Communist" or "Capitalist." They are not yet mature enough to make an informed choice.
