Special Sub-Topic: "Decks and Violence"
The Montecito holds a Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament. One of the entrants is an old friend of Mike's from back in college. Once Mike got in trouble when everyone was partying and he got caught up in jail. He called back to his dorm and only one person was there...who helped him out with bail. Mike said he'd forever be in debt to him... and there the guy is! Funnily enough, he shares his name with a character from my favourite TV show of all time, "M*A*S*H". What's his name?
Ben Pierce. Mike said he never really spoke to Pearce yet he could never thank him enough for bailing him out that night. In this episode...he repaid that debt.
As usual, there is a convention at the Montecito. This time it's the swizzle stick convention where collectors from all over America come to celebrate...swizzle sticks. Being the hip group that they are...they also have a fantastic acronym for their association. What is it?
S.A.S.S.C. The 'Society of American Swizzle Stick Collectors'. It's pronounced Sassy...you see. Monty, the president tells Danny about how he has the prize swizzle stick...one used by George W. Bush himself. Vice President Loretta Harris tells Danny that on e-bay it could be sold for at least $80-$85!
Magicians Vanko and Vera perform their magic show at the Montecito. They are a married couple and advertise that any couple that sees their show will live happily forever. Their magic fixes relationships! In one show...Vera went missing! Ed goes to Vanko's dressing room afterwards to ask what happened to Vera...and he asks what happens when Vera disappears. Vanko refused to tell him how their magic works... but he does give Ed a hint. He tells Ed that in magic there are five basic categories. They are appearance, disappearance, transformation, levitation and one more. He then tells Ed that this category is not in the trick. What is the final category?
Sawing. Sawink! There is no sawing involved in the trick...which is extremely obvious. Vanko basically revealed nothing to Ed.
Vanko and Vera also have an assistant. She's a pretty young Russian girl who is the bird wrangler. She's also in love with Vanko and takes over Vera's spot when she's missing. What's her name?
Olga. When Vera returns and takes her spot back...Olga cracks her magic stick and leaves in a huff. Her birds are named Horse and Carriage.
Mike's poker playing friend was staked into the poker tournament by a loan shark, Louis Ambrose. Now he owes Ambrose $40,000 and needs it urgently. With Mike's friend needing a few tips about poker...who does Mike take him to see?
Nessa. Nessa is a pit boss, and watches people play poker all day long. She has learned about people's reactions. When she's demonstrating to Pearce about reactions...she's looking straight at Phil Ivey, a well known poker player. Howard Lederer, Phil Gordon and Chris "Jesus Ferguson also appear in this episode. I found it amusing that Gordon's and Ivey's acting jobs in particular were quite rigid...amazing considering that acting is a big part of poker!
The swizzle stick convention takes a turn for the worse when the president, Monty McClure, has his prized George W. swizzle go missing. It was stolen! Who stole it?
Vice President Loretta Harris. Loretta Harris took it as she knew without Monty having it, she'd have the best collection. And with the best collection comes the honour of being president of S.A.S.S.C.
Mike's college friend played in a high stakes poker game to try and win some money back that he owes Ambrose. Unfortunately, Ambrose was there at the table and just his presence is enough to put him off. Mike's friend can't take it, so he bails out to throw up. Who plays for him, taking his place?
Mike. Mike took Ben's spot and duly wipes out Ambrose. He won back what he owes and with Ed in tow, Ambrose leaves with only $10,000. Ambrose tries to bluff...but Mike picks it. Chris Ferguson is sitting at the table at the time...but doesn't play for Pearce.
When Vera disappears...she doesn't come back when she's meant to. She's run away from Vanko. Without Vera, the Vanko and Vera show just isn't working, so Ed needs to find Vera. Did he end up finding Vera and leading her back into Vanko's arms?
y. When Ed finds Vera in a hotel room, she admits that she still loves Vanko and wants to come back. She does so duly and appears back in her cage at the show.
Danny gets shot at the end of this episode. Luckily for Danny, the gunman doesn't have the best aim...and gets him in the foot. Who shot him?
Louis Ambrose. The story behind this is quite entertaining. Just as filming for this episode had finished, Josh Duhamel rang Gary Scott Thompson, the producer, to tell him that he's done something bad. He tore his Achilles tendon while playing basketball and had to be on crutches for six weeks. They can't just kick out Danny's character for six weeks, so they had to write his crutches into the script. With the storyline about Ambrose the loan shark going, Ed at the end basically roughs up Ambrose by telling him where to go. Although that was meant to be the end of it all, they made it so that Danny would go and drive Ed's hummer to the front of the car park, and Ambrose, thinking Ed was inside, shot at him. He hits him in the foot, and voilą! Perfect alibi for Duhamel's basketball incident.
In a touching moment, all of the gang went to visit Danny in the hospital after he's been shot in the foot. Everyone comes and gives him a hug or a kiss...but only one kisses his foot. Who?
Mary. Of course it's Mary. She shows once again that she still deeply cares for him by kissing the cast on his ankle. Mike also leans in for a kiss but gets rejected. Thompson said that this scene was a nice little bonus to tack on after Duhamel's mishap.
