    A Radical Hindu. Upon gaining India's independence from Britain, Gandhi was struggling for unity between Indian Hindus and Muslims. He repeatedly discouraged any Hindu violence against Muslims. The country had such great respect for him that he held great sway over them, and anti-Muslim (or anti-Hindu) riots were usually short-lived. Unfortunately radicals did not want peace, and this ended Gandhi's life.
