Special Sub-Topic: Golfing Presidents


Ah, it is finally tee time. It may also be tea time if you live where the game of golf originated. This president was the first president to attempt the game of golf. It was not during the Battle of Shiloh. It was not at siege of Vicksburg. He was more famous as a general than a president. He was more famous as a president than a golfer. His attempt at golf was in Scotland (the birthplace of golf) in a tour of Europe after his presidency.

    Ulysses S. Grant. Grant promptly missed the golf ball six times, and decided not to try again.He was in Scotland: the birthplace of golf. Golf had started there in the 15th century. Grant did not want any part of it after his embarrassing display.

It is time to sink that birdie putt. This president claimed to have had a 79 one day, but it is also reported that he had to take 200 swings to get this accomplished. He was the "King of the Mulligan".
    Bill Clinton. He took so many mulligans that a writer who witnessed it claimed to have said they were "billigans". He played golf with a number of celebrities during his tenure.

This is a gimme. This president was notorious for his clumsiness, reported ineptitude and hitting spectators with golf balls. His reputation would be hurt after his pardoning another president over Watergate. Sink the putt.
    Gerald Ford & Ford. Ford played football at Michigan. He would lose his job as president after the pardon of Richard Nixon. He is the only president not to be part of an elected tandem. He replaced Spiro Agnew after he had resigned.

An eagle putt? This duo were the first relative presidents to play golf together when one was president. No they did not play at the Baghdad Country Club, but their troops could have.
    George H. Bush and George W. Bush. There has been several relatives to make it to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but the Bush duo were the only father-son presidents to play golf together.

Let's go to 5th hole. This president played more golf in his White House years than any other president. He was a member of Augusta, and once wanted a tree to be cut down in the middle of the course. The membership committee balked. Instead of cutting it down, they named the tree after him. This president was _________.
    Dwight Eisenhower. Ike played over 800 rounds as president, and left golf spike holes in the floor of the Oval Office. The tree is called the Eisenhower Tree. His demeanor around the oval office was dictated by his rounds of golf. It is said that the presidental staff would pray that he would do well, so he would be in a good mood.

Line up your putt for a break to the left. Golf has been long considered an "aristocratic" sport. This president did not want the American public to see him in this light. He refused to be photographed on the golf course because he said his predecessor played "too much" golf. He did not want to be stereotyped as a golfer in the White House.
    John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy would only play the middle holes because of his insecurity toward photographers. It is said some of his extra-marital affairs came in the clubhouse.

Let's go back to 7th. This president was playing at Augusta National on a day when a man took hostages in the pro shop. He was the oldest president to play golf in office.
    Ronald Reagan. Reagan played the fewest rounds of any president who "knew" how to play the game. They left the golf balls on the green the day the hostages were taken at Augusta. Reagan did speak to the man on the phone before SWAT members took over the clubhouse.

Make sure you put down the right score on your card! This president once said he had a 5 on a Par 5 hole, and the people who were playing him said he had an 8. He answered their concern that he was cheating by remarking "I am President of the United States and can have a mulligan anywhere I want to. I tell you to put a 5 on the scorecard". They did put a 5 on his card.
    Lyndon B Johnson & Johnson & Lyndon B. Johnson. Lyndon claimed golf relaxed him from his problems in Vietnam.

Fore! The best golfer of all of the United States Presidents. He was unable to play the last years of his life because of his struggle with polio. This president did get angry when people did not "FORE" warn" him of oncoming golf shots.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR was consistently in the 70's. He would become very depressed when the disease deprived him of playing the game.

Last chance for a birdie. Which of the following celebrities had the most influence in presidential golf as well as a comedy show to our armed forces. He was the first personality to get a presidential foursome together. They were Ford, Clinton, Reagan and Bush.
    Bob Hope. Bob was friends with most of the presidents, and then would make fun of them in jest on his tours and tv shows. He is also the first celebrity to build and raise funds for an exclusive country club in the Los Angeles area. 100,000 dollars would get you the chance to play at the Rancho Mirage Country Club.
