In this country the monarchy was abolished in 1910. The last king was Manuel II.

    Portugal. Manuel II was overthrown in 1910 and Portugal became a republic.

In this European country monarchy was abolished 1973. The last king was Constantine II.
    Greece. King Constantine II left the country after the military coup in 1967. The Colonels' regime lasted until 1973, when Greece became a presidential republic.

Muhammad VI was the last monarch to rule this country. He ruled from 1918-1922.
    Turkey. Muhammad VI was the last of the Ottoman emperors. Nationalists led by Mustafa Kemal, later also called Ataturk, took power 1923. He wanted a westernized, secular state.

This country was proclaimed a kingdom in 1910. The ruler Nikita, or Nicholas, was king 1910-1918, when he was dethroned.
    Montenegro. Nicholas I tried to expel the Turks in 1910. In 1914 he declared war against Austria and was soon overrun by Austrian and German troops. In 1918 Nicholas was deposed and Montenegro was united with Serbia.

In 1946 King Victor Emanuel III abdicated and left this country. A national referendum brought the end of monarchy in June 1946, and a republic was proclaimed.
    Italy. Victor Emanuel played a passive role in Italian politics before World War II. He accepted Mussolini in 1922 and let himself be crowned Emperor of Ethiopia in 1936 and also King of Albania in 1939. He dismissed Mussolini in 1943 but in a plebiscite held in 1946 the Italians voted to abolish the monarchy.

King Zog I was made king of this country 1928.
    Albania. Zog was premier 1922-24 and when Albania was proclaimed a republic in 1925 he was elected president. After that he proclaimed himself king in 1928. Albania became financially dependent on Italy and was finally occupied by Mussolini in 1939.

The last king of this country was the 'child king' Peter II. He was forced to flee the country 1941.
    Yugoslavia. In 1918 'the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes' was formed under Serbian king Peter I. In 1921 he was succeeded by Alexander I and the country was eventually renamed Yugoslavia. The uncle of Peter I, called Paul, was the de facto regent after the assassination of Alexander I in 1934.

Nicholas II was the last royal person to rule this country. He was overthrown and murdered 1918. Technically, though, his brother Michael was the last ruler, but he just ruled for a day or two.
    Russia. The Russian Tsar and his family were of course killed by Communist forces.

Boris III was tsar of this country 1918-43. The monarchy was abolished by popular vote in 1946.
    Bulgaria. Bulgaria had had severe losses during World War I, in which they were allied with the losers Austria-Hungary and Germany. Because of this Ferdinand I abdicated in favour of his son Boris III. In World War II Bulgaria joined the Axis powers and hence lost in both world wars.

The last king of this country was Michael, who was forced to abdicate 1947.
    Romania. Michael had surrendered the throne to his father 1930, but was restored in 1940. The dictator Antonescu joined the Axis powers in World War II. In 1944 King Michael and the Romanian army overthrew the Fascist regime and even changed sides, but this wasn't enough to preserve the power of the old élites.

This country was an empire until 1889 and the last emperor was Pedro II.
    Brazil. Pedro II was overthrown in a military coup in 1889 and Brazil was declared a republic. At the same time Brazil abolished slavery, the last country in the Americas to do so.

Maximilian was declared emperor of this country 1863, but was captured and shot 1867.
    Mexico. Maximilian was brother of the Austrian emperor Franz Josef. He was placed on the throne by conservatives supported by France during the civil war. Republican rule was restored 1867. Viewed from Europe, the attempt to make a Habsburg "Emperor of Mexico" in the 1860s looked like something straight out of a comic opera.

King Idris' monarchy of this country was overthrown by a military coup in 1969.
    Libya. Idris was overthrown by Muammar al-Qaddafi.

Faisal I was proclaimed king of this country 1920, but was overthrown by the French the same year.
    Syria. Syria was a French League of Nations mandated territory.

In 1921 the same Faisal I was made king of another country. This country was a British mandate. Which country was it?
    Iraq. The country used to be called Mesopotamia and was for a long time a part of the Ottoman Empire. It was renamed Iraq by the British who invaded the country in 1915-18.

The Cossack leader Reza Khan was proclaimed Reza Shah Pahlavi in this country in 1925.
    Iran. Reza Shah Pahlavi abdicated in 1941 after the British and Soviet invasion. His son Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi became took over the throne in 1941, but was overthrown by Ayatollah Khomeyni 1979.

Haile Selassie was overthrown by a coup in this country in 1977.
    Ethiopia. Haile Selassie was overthrown by Marxist dictator Mengistu.

Britain proclaimed this country an autonomous monarchy in 1922. The first king was Faud I.
    Egypt. FUD was succeeded by Farouk (1936-52).

Amanullah was proclaimed king of this country 1926. The monarchy was overthrown in a coup in 1973.
    Afghanistan. The last king of Afghanistan was Zahir Shah, who returned to the country after the Taliban fell in 2001.

In this country King Savang Vatthana abdicated 1975 and the country became a republic. Where are we now?
    Laos. The Communist Pathet Lao movement took power in 1975.
