Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A Hardy Cloyster with maximum EV's and IV's in defense will have how much Defense, precisely?

Answer: 499

Cloyster has an amazing 200 base defense, and as Hardy is a neutral nature, its defense plays by the normal Algorithms. On a neutral nature, the formula for calculating a stat other than HP (at Lv100) is:

((Base stat x2) + (EV's/4) + (IV's) + 5).

For HP, the formula is:

((Base stat x2) + (EV's/4) + (IV's) + 110)

For an advantageous nature, you use the correct Equation and multiply it by 1.1.
For a disadvantageous nature, you multiply it by 0.9 instead.
2. Is it possible to tell if your Shedinja has max IV's in HP?

Answer: Yes

All you need to do this is your Pokemon's personality. If it 'Often Dozes Off', and has a different IV above 26 (you'll probably need to calculate to find this out), it will have maximum IV's in HP. Sure, the HP will still be only 1, but hey!

You can use this technique for getting a rough idea about the dominant IV's of any Pokemon.
3. Which of these Pokemon will NOT help you in attack EV training? (NOTE: This is without your Pokemon holding the Power Bracer.)

Answer: Kricketot

Surprised?

A defeated Kricketot will give you 1 EV point in defense, not attack, which is quite unusual, because its evolution, Kricketune, gives you 2 EV points in Attack. Looks like a 'go figure' to me.

Unown give you 1 EV point in both Attack and Special Attack, and Infernape gives you an EV point in the three main mixed Sweeper stats: Attack, Special Attack AND Speed. Very useful, but unfortunately, you can't find many of them, so it would take a while if you wanted to precisely balance out your EVs in these stats (which would be 170 points in each, in case you were curious).
4. If a Paralyzed Persian Performs Pay Day on a Poisoned Pelliper, could you Perhaps Precisely Point out the Power of the Persian's Performance?

Answer: 90

Sorry about all the p's. I just got bored. You may have put sixty in as your answer, and you're probably outraged and confused about why it was wrong, but don't fill in the correction report just yet! There's a method to my madness. Here it is:

There was a less than subtle hint in the question that you might not have seen due to the multitude of p's: Paralysis. If a Persian is paralyzed, it means that it does not have its common ability, Limber. If it doesn't have Limber, it therefore does have its less common ability, Technician.

As we all know, Technician powers up moves with a base power of 60 or less by 50%. This raises the power to 60, but that's not all. Don't forget that Persian is a normal type, as is Pay Day. This STAB increases the already increased 60 base power to an amazing 90!

Not bad for a 'weak' move, huh?

Oh yeah, the poisoned Pelliper was just a red herring. It was basically just a wee test to see if you could separate the trivial info from the important.
5. Which of these moves is most effective on a Gastly (accurate to the 4th generation, ignoring any OPPOSING abilities, hold items or support moves)?

Answer: Grass Knot

Grass Knot may do almost no damage on a Gastly (due to it weighing about 91 grams), but Earthquake, Cross Chop and Hyper Beam all do absolutely nothing!

Ghost types are immune to Normal and Fighting type moves, which eliminates Cross Chop and Hyper Beam, and ever since Ruby and Sapphire, Gastly has had the ability 'Levitate', which renders all Ground moves (except Sand Attack) completely useless.

Unfortunately, Gastly's Levitate can be countered easily. Anyone with the moves Skill Swap, Gastro Acid, Worry Seed, Gravity, or the ability Mold Breaker can easily overcome this problem. Or, if the Gastly is holding an Iron Ball or Lagging Tail, it will no longer levitate as well (I'm not sure why it would be holding one of these items, but hey). =)
6. Which of these moves would be most effective on a steady Toxicroak? (NOTE: Assume identical Def and Sp.Def stats on the Toxicroak, and identical Atk and Sp.Atk stats on the attacking Pokemon, and ignore possible STAB.)

Answer: Ember

This hint was pretty vague, so don't feel bad if you missed it. The hint was 'a steady Toxicroak' meaning one that didn't shake, or to put it a different way, shudder. If it doesn't shudder, it doesn't shudder from Anticipation, and therefore can't have the ability, which means it will have the ability Dry Skin!

Dry Skin causes its host to absorb water moves, yet it also makes it weak against fire moves. This makes Hydro Pump useless against it. If you know your normal type alignments after this, you should be able to deduct that Ember is the most effective move!

Spark will have 65 power, as it has 1x effectiveness, and 65 base power. Hydro Pump will heal him, due to Dry Skin. Submission has 80 base power, but this will be reduced to 40, because of his poison typing being resistant to fighting type moves. Therefore, Ember will have the most power, with 40 base and 2x effectiveness, due to the Dry Skin, bringing it to a total of 80.
7. You're in a double battle, and your pokemon has just used 'Move X'. You are up against a Skarmory and a Drapion, and Move X is super effective on one, and doesn't even affect the other. What type is the move?

Answer: Ground

Drapion only has the one weakness, Ground, while Skarmory has two: Fire and electric. As Psychic is the only type that doesn't affect Drapion, and that is not very effective against a Skarmory, Ground has to be Move X's type, as it fits the equation, by being super effective against Drapion, whilst useless against Skarmory. Fire and Electric are both effective against a Drapion, but only as neutrals.

The two moves that Move X could've been are Earthquake, Magnitude and Earth Power.
8. You have just sent out 'Pokemon Y' against a Groudon. Groudon's Drought has made it sunny, yet it still needs to charge up a Solarbeam. What could Pokemon Y be?

Answer: Psyduck

Psyduck and Golduck can have the ability, Cloud Nine, which completely negates all weather effects, including single turn Solarbeams, surefire Thunders and Blizzards, powered up fire or water moves, and even the Special Defense boost on Rock types in a Sandstorm. Abilities affected by weather (i.e. Chlorophyll, Swift Swim, etc.) will also be made redundant. Rayquaza has a different ability, Air Lock, which has the exact same effect.

With either of these abilities in play (after the Groudon has entered, of course), Groudon will have to charge a Solarbeam in order to use it properly.
9. Which of these natures would cause a confused Pokemon to deal the most damage to itself?

Answer: Lonely

A lonely nature increases a Pokemon's attack, but lowers its defense, meaning that they will be at their most extreme, and they will hurt themselves the most in confusion.

When your Pokemon is confused, the damage it deals upon itself is calculated by two things:
1. It's physical attack and defense stats.
2. Any increase or decrease in these stats.

A Bold nature lowers attack and raises defense, so it will do minimal damage

An Impish nature lowers Sp.Atk and raises defense, so it will still do more damage than the bold version of the same Pokemon, but less than a Lonely one.
10. Is it possible to have all three of the starter Pokemon (in any evolution) legitimately on "Red" or "Blue" WITHOUT trading (or connecting to ANY other device)?

Answer: Yes

Argue all you want, but I've done this, and it's all down to the wonderful Missingno. glitch on Cinnabar coast. The glitch allows you to catch certain Pokemon over Lv100 on this coast, depending on what your name is.

The 3rd, 5th and 7th letters of your name decide what Pokemon you find. I'm not going to reveal what letters let you catch which Pokemon, but I will tell you that there are 'codes' for all three of the starters, in first or last evolution, and even Mewtwo!

Yes, you read right: Mewtwo. Put in the right name, and you could catch yourself a lv230 Mewtwo on Cinnabar coast. Just make sure that you have enough supplies to take care of a small country if you're going to attempt to catch one (or, just clone your Master Ball and do it the easy way).

Thanks you for taking this quiz! =D
