Fun Trivia: N : Norse Myth

Special Sub-Topic: Ragnarok!

What is Ragnarok also known as?

Gotterdammerung. This is the translation in the Norse native language. It literally means Doom of the Powers, or Destruction of the Powers, where Powers means Gods. A common misconception is that Ragnarok means the Twilight of the Gods. This is the result of a famous mistranslation.

What will happen first in the cycle leading to Ragnarok?
Fimbulwinter & Fimbulvetr. Fimbulwinter, or Fimbulvetr is the winter of winters. Three such winters will follow each other with no summers in between. Conflicts and feuds will break out, even between families, and all morality will disappear. This is the beginning of the end.

Next, the two wolf brothers Skoll and Hati will devour something each, what?
The sun and the moon. This will plunge the Earth into darkness, and consequently wipe the stars from the sky.

After that, Fjalar will crow to the giants, Gullinkambi will crow to the Gods, and a third will crow to the dead. What type of creature will be doing this crowing?
Cock. The third cock will raise the dead, who will form a lot of the ranks of one of the Ragnarok armies.

The world will then shudder with Earthquakes and the bonds of which animal will be broken?
Fenrir the terrible wolf. Fenrir could break out of any normal chains, no matter how heavy. So, the Gods called upon the Dwarves to fashion a chain that would hold Fenrir. The result was a bond made of, amongst other things, hair from a woman's beard, fish breath and bird spit.

The sea will rear up because Jormundgand is making his way towards land. What is Jormungand?
The Midgard Serpent. With every breath, Jormungand will stain the soil and the sky with his poison. The waves caused by the serpent's emerging will set free the ship Naglfar, and with the giant Hymir as their commander, the giants will sail towards the battlefield.

From the realm of the dead, a second ship will set forth carrying the inhabitants of hell with this God as their helmsman.
Loki. This ship will be made of fingernails. That is why the Norse always stripped their victim's corpses of their nails to prevent Ragnarok. Loki wanted revenge on Odin as Odin had chained him to a rock with snake's poison dripping onto his face as a punishment for killing Baldr, the God of light and joy. It was believed that Loki's struggling to break free caused earthquakes.

Surt will leave Muspell in the south to join against the Gods with what creatures behind him?
Fire Giants. Surt, carrying a sword that blazes like the sun itself, will scorch the earth.

Meanwhile, Heimdall will call the sons of whom, along with the heroes to the battlefield?
Odin. From all the corners of the world, gods, giants, dwarves, demons and elves will ride towards the huge plain of Vigrid ("battle shaker") where the last battle will be fought.

In the final battle, who will Odin engage?
Fenrir. This battle will rage for a long time until eventually Fenrir swallows Odin whole. Odin's son Vidar will kill the wolf with his bare hands, ripping its jaws apart.

Which of the following are also battles at Ragnarok?
Surt and Freyr, Tyr and Garm, Loki and Heimdall. Surt will seek out the swordless Freyr, who will quickly succumb to the giant. The one-handed Tyr will fight the monstrous hound Garm and they will kill each other. Loki and Heimdall, age-old enemies, will meet for a final time, and neither will survive their encounter.

Who will kill Thor?
Jormungand. Although in the fight between Thor and the Jormungand, Thor will slay the serpent first, its venom will kill Thor after he has walked nine paces.

Who will perform the final act in Ragnarok?
Surt. Surt will fling fire in every direction. The nine worlds will burn, and friends and foes alike will perish. The earth will sink into the sea.

True or false, some of the Gods survive Ragnarok.
    t. The only Gods who survive are Forseti the God of justice, and Bragi the God of bards; however, many other Gods will be reborn.

Which of the following best describes the world after Raganarok?
Idyllic, abundant with supplies. After the destruction, a new and idyllic world will arise from the sea and will be filled with abundant supplies. Wickedness and misery will no longer exist and gods and men will live happily together. The descendants of Lif and Lifthrasir will inhabit this earth.
