Chapter 1: 'Magic and Iron'. How old was Nevare when he was taken to Franner's Bend at the start of the chapter?

8. Franner's Bend was an old military outpost; it was here that Nevare first saw Plains magic.

Chapter 2: 'Harbinger'. According to the Writ, what was Nevare born to do?

wear the sword. The actual passage reads 'The first for an heir, the second to wear the sword, the third to serve as a priest, the fourth to labour for beauty's sake, the fifth to gather knowledge'.

Chapter 3: 'Dewara'. The plainsman Dewara is a member of which tribe?

Kidona. The Rew and Kidona are Plains tribes; the others are Native American tribes.

Chapter 4: 'Crossing the Bridge'. What is the third bridge that Nevare crosses made of?

Plants. The order of the bridges that Nevare must cross is Swanneck, ceramic pottery, plants, bird bones, ice and mud brick. Nevare could cross easily as he was Gernian and not truly Kidona.

Chapter 5: 'The Return'. What are the names of Nevare's parents?

Keft and Selethe. All the others are still characters in the book; Yaril is his sister, Rosse is his brother, Carsina is his promised wife, Epiny is his cousin, Sefert is his uncle and Spink is a cadet at the academy.

Chapter 6: 'Sword and Pen'. Dark Evening is also known as what?

Dark woman's night. This is supposedly because a married woman could be unfaithful to her husband on that one night.

Chapter 7: 'Journey'. What is the name of the boy who kisses Yaril at the party?

Remwar. The others are cadets at the academy. Remwa tells Nevare that his father is in negotiations for the two to be married.

Chapter 8: 'Old Thares'. How many people died in the jankship crash that Epiny tells about?

6. Epiny came into see Nevare late at night to talk to him while he was staying at his uncle's.

Chapter 9: 'The Academy'. What is the name of Nevare's house?

Carneston. Carneston, Bringham and Skeltzin are from the academy; Griffindor is from Hogwarts (the "Harry Potter" series of books).

Chapter 10: 'Classmates'. What is the second class that the cadets attend?

Maths. The order of lessons on the first day is Military history, Maths, Varnian (language) and Engineering and Drawing.
