    Belgrade. Belgrade means "white city". It is also called Beograde, Beograd, or Belgrad.

    Ljubljana. Ljublijana is pronounced "l-YOOB-l-YAWN-a" in English. The world's oldest musical instrument was discovered there, a bone flute that is probably 9,000 to 12,000 years old!

    Zagreb. Zagreb is in northwestern Croatia. It is the economical & political center of the region.

What is the capital of Macedonia (FYROM)?
    Skopje. The republic was admitted as a member of the United Nations on 8th April 1993 as The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

What is the capital of Montenegro?
    Podgorica. Podgorica means "under Gorica". It is also known as Titograd (Tito city).

What is the capital of Bosnia?
    Sarajevo.

    Cyrillic. Macedonian and Serbian both use the Cyrillic, and Croatian & Slovene use the Latin.

Which country is occasionally referred to as a Central European country instead of a Balkan one?
    Slovenia. Slovenia shares borders with Italy, Croatia, Austria, and Hungary.

    Istria. It is called Istra in Croatian.

Montenegro is landlocked. True or false? (Istina ili neistina?)
    F. Serbia is landlocked. Montenegro supposedly has very clean waters.

If you were at a bazen in Split, what would you say in English?
    A pool in a Croatian city. Split is the second largest city in Croatia.

Where would you find Banja Luka?
    Bosnia. Banja Luka means "Spa Harbor/Port". Strange, because the city is landlocked!

Where were Dalmatian dogs first bred?
    It isn't certain. Rumor has it that they came from Dalmatia, but there isn't sufficient evidence to support this claim.

What is Macedonia's anthem called?
    "Denes nad Makedonija". It means "Today Above Macedonia".

What is the general Yugoslavia's anthem?
    "Hej slaveni". "Hej Slaveni" is considered to be the anthem of Communists. The REAL anthem is considered to be either Serbia's or Montenegro's anthems.

What is Slovenia's anthem?
    "Zdravlica".

Does Bosnia have an anthem?
    Y. It is called "Zemljo Tisucljetna" (thousand year old land).

What is the official name of Croatia's anthem?
    Lijepa nasa domovino. The anthem came from a poem by Antun Mihanovic titled "Horvatska Domovina". The poem is written in an older form of Croatian which is quite similar to Slovene.

What is Serbia's anthem?
    "Boze pravde".

What does "Yugoslavia" mean in Serbo-Crotian?
    The land of the Southern Slavs. It is spelled Jugoslavija in Serbian. Jug means south, Slav is a slavic person, and the suffix "-ia" is used to mean a land. They all speak South Slavonic languages there.

When did Slovenia and Croatia declare independence from Yugoslavia?
    June 25, 1991. They had long complained that their economies were being unfairly drained. Hvala lijepa!
