When did the British Parliament pass the Stamp Act?

    1765. The Stamp Act was passed in March of 1765. It imposed a tax on documents and printed items including wills, newspapers, and playing cards.

What year did the Boston Tea Party happen?
    1773. The Boston Tea Party wasn't actually a tea party. It was a group of Boston rebels that disguised themselves of Native Americans and went into the Boston Harbor to take action against Lord North's Tea Act. They dumped 18,000 punds of the East India Company's tea into the Boston Harbor that December 16th, 1773 night.

What year did Parliament pass the "Intolerable Acts"?
    1774. One of these Intolerable Acts shut down the Boston Harbor, and another, calle the Quartering Act, authorized British military commanders to house soldiers in vacant, private homes and other buildings. In this same year the First Continental Congress was convened.

What year did the Second Continental Congress meet?
    1775. Colonial leaders called the Second Continental Congress to Philidelphia to debate their next move. Some wanted the independence from Great Britain, but others wanted to reconciliation.

When did the colonies declare independence?
    July 4, 1776. The Decleration of Independence (from Great Britain) was adopted on July 4th 1776.

When did the British surrender at Yorktown?
    1781. Charles Cornwallis (general of the British) planned on going south to fortify Yorktown and take Virginia. However, the armies of generals Lafayette and Washington moved south after finding out about Cornwallis' plan. In September of 1781 about 17,000 French and American troops surrounded the British in Yorktown and began fireing at them. On October 19th, 1781, Cornwallis surrendered and the Americans shocked the world because they had defeated the great British empire.

When did Daniel Shays lead a rebellion against higher taxes?
    1786. This was called Shays's Rebellion. It caused panic throughout the nation and led to call for a stronger national government.

What year was the Constitution ratified?
    1788. Supporters of the Constitution, or Federalists, favored the new Constitution because of its balance and power between the states and the national government. The Antifederalists opposed the Constitution because they didn't like the idea of a strong central government.

When was George Washington elected president?
    1789. George Washington didn't belong to any political party. He was born in Virginia on Feburary 22, 1732 and died on December 14, 1799.

    1792. George Washington served a total of 8 years as President of the United States between the years of 1789 and 1797. The next president to serve was John Adams.
