Special Sub-Topic: United's Crucial League Games
1964-65: United played Arsenal at Old Trafford. If United won this game they would win the championship with a game in hand. What was the final scoreline?
Manchester United 3 -1 Arsenal. United won the game 3-1 and with it became the first United squad to win the league championship since the Busby Babes' success in 1957-58.
The scorers were Denis Law with 2 and George Best. George Eastham scored Arsenal's consolation.
In April 1992, United travelled to Liverpool knowing they had to win to stay in contention for the title. They lost 2-0. Who scored the Liverpool goals?
Ian Rush & Mark Walters. United eventually lost out to Leeds United that year in what was the last season before the introduction of the F.A Premier League. United had been quoted at aodds of 8-1 on to win the title 3 weeks prior to the match but just one win in their final 5 games allowed the Elland Road outfit to come through and snatch the League title.
Manchester United achieved their first League title success in 26 years in season 1992-93. Which former Manchester United manager was the manager of the team which were runners-up that season?
Ron Atkinson & Atkinson. Atkinson was manager of Aston Villa who finished second in the first season of the FA Premier League. Norwich City finished third (conceding more goals than they scored!). There was a carnival atmosphere as United beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 in their final home game and received the trophy in front of an emotional Sir Matt Busby.
In the 1992/93 season, the runners-up suffered defeat against which club to hand the title to United?
Oldham Athletic. Oldham Athletic, managed by Joe Royle, defeated Villa to give United the title for the first time in 26 years. Oldham also defeated United that year when the reds visited Boundary Park with the Latics running out 1-0 winners. United had beaten them 3-0 at Old Trafford earlier in the season though.
In the 1992-93 season, Manchester United had a crucial game against Sheffield Wednesday at Old Trafford. Manchester United won with two headed goals scored in injury time by Steve Bruce. Who supplied the cross which led to Bruce's second goal?
Gary Pallister. Pallister's cross flicked off the head of a Wednesday defender and fell nicely for Bruce to head home and secure a 2-1 victory. Earlier in the game, Paul Ince had conceded a penalty which John Sheridan slotted away to give Wednesday the lead.
1974-75: which team did United draw 2-2 against to confirm their second division championship and promotion back to the top flight.
Notts County. Stewart Houston and Brian Greenhoff scored United's goals which made sure that United's first spell in the second division since 1938 was but a one year stint.
1955-56: A win against which team was their game of the season?
Portsmouth. A goal by Dennis Viollet allowed United to run out as winners.
1994-95: in one of the closest ever finishes to a league season, United were pipped at the post by Blackburn Rovers. Which London team ultimately denied United on the final day of the season?
West Ham United. United were held to a 1-1 draw. Just one goal more would have given them the title as Blackburn were defeated 2-1 at Anfield on the same day.
In the last game of the 1994-95 season against West Ham United, which West Ham player put United 1-0 behind?
Michael Hughes. Brian McClair scored United's equaliser.
1995-96: another last day decider. At which ground did United travel to and record a 3-0 win, to win the title?
The Riverside Stadium. United travelled to the riverside to face Middlesbrough whilst main challengers Newcastle faced Tottenham at St. James'park. United knew a win would win them the title and they won 3-0 with goals from David May, Andy Cole and Ryan Giggs. In the end, a draw would have been enough as Newcastle drew 1-1 with Tottenham.
1995-96 season: United won a crucial game against Leeds United at Old Trafford 1-0 but which Leeds player was forced to play in goal after the keeper, Mark Beeney, was sent-off early in the match?
Lucas Radebe. Roy Keane scored the only goal as Leeds produced an inspired defensive performance and centre-back Radebe played very well in goal. After this game, Ferguson questioned if the Leeds players would be quite as committed when they played Newcastle in their next game. These comments led to Keegan's infamous outburst: "I'd love it if we beat 'em... Love it!"
In the treble winning season 1998-99, United faced Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford knowing they needed a victory to be sure of beating Arsenal to the title, but who were main challengers Arsenal facing on the same day at Highbury?
Aston Villa. Arsenal ran out 1-0 winners after a second-half Kanu strike but this was not to be enough.
Who were the scorers in the 1998-99 treble winning season's final league game against Tottenham?
Manchester United 2 (Beckham, Cole) Tottenham 1 (Ferdinand). Les Ferdinand lobbed Schmeichel to give Tottenham a shock lead but Beckham equalised just before half-time when he curled into the top corner from a Scholes pass. Cole lobbed Walker superbly to score the winner just after half-time.
In the 1997-98 season, Arsenal claimed a heart-breaking victory at Old Trafford which went a long way to taking the title to Highbury. Which Arsenal player scored the winning goal?
Marc Overmars & Overmars & Marc. This game was the point when people realised that Arsenal would be taking the title back to the capital. To cap a thoroughly miserable day for United, Peter Schmeichel pulled a hamstring after coming up to attack a corner and missed crucial games in the run-in.
In January 1995, United recorded a 1-0 win against the eventual title winners Blackburn Rovers when Eric Cantona headed in a Ryan Giggs cross. This game was also Andy Cole's United debut?
t. This is true. Cole actually had a chance in the opening minute but he screwed it wide. Cole did not have a happy debut and criticism would follow him throughout his United career but he was appreciated by United fans and his 5 Premier League winner's medals, 2 F.A Cup winner's medals and his European Champion's League winner's medal allowed Cole to stick two fingers up at critics.
