Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these is not a type of penalty?

Answer: Mild Penalty

There are 6 types of penalties that can be called: Minor Penalty, Major Penalty, Bench Minor Penalty, Misconduct Penalty, Match Penalty, and finally Penalty Shot.
2. How many minutes in the penalty box will a minor penalty get you?

Answer: 2

A minor penalty will net you 2 minutes in the penalty box, while a major penalty will net 5 minutes.
3. What happens if a single player gets 3 major penalties in the same game?

Answer: Ejected from the game

Upon receiving a 3rd major penalty, the player is automatically ejected from the game, although a player may get ejected on certain major penalties at the discretion of the referee.
4. When a player receives a player misconduct penalty, he gets sent to the penalty box, and a player is allowed to replace him when his penalty is done.

Answer: False

A player called for a misconduct penalty is sent to the penalty box for 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes are up, the player must stay in the penalty box until the next stoppage of play. He must re-enter the game unless there is an injury pending.
5. If a goalkeeper displaces his goal posts when the opposing team is on a breakaway before any shot is taken, what happens?

Answer: penalty shot is awarded

Normally, a minor penalty (Delay of Game) is called on the goalkeeper, but if it happens during a breakaway, a penalty shot is awarded.
6. What type of penalty is called if a player is found to have deliberatly injured an opponent?

Answer: Match Penalty

A match penalty would be called and the player would be suspended from play until the Commisioner of the NHL rules on the issue.
7. If a goalkeeper commits a minor penalty, that goalkeeper must serve two minutes in the penalty box?

Answer: False

When a goalkeeper commits a minor or major penalty, another player on the same team as the goalkeeper that was on the ice the moment the penalty occured must take his place in the penalty box. The player sent to the box is chosen by the team's coach or manager, and it cannot be a player already in the penalty box serving penalty time.
8. For the penalty "High Sticking", what part of the body must the offending player's stick contact above on his opponent for it to be called?

Answer: Shoulders

If a player's stick contacts anywhere above an opponent's shoulders, a "high sticking" penalty will be called, and that player will be issued with a minor, or in the case of an injury, a double minor, or possibly a major.
9. For the penalty "Cross-Checking", both hands of a player are holding the stick while delivering a check to a player by extending his arms?

Answer: True

A minor or major penalty may be given by the discretion of the referee. A major penalty of this sort will usually result in an additonal fine.
10. If a player swings his stick at an opposing player, what penalty is called?

Answer: Slashing

The penalty can be called whether or not the stick makes contact with the player. Although if the stick contact is not agressive and makes contact with a player's pants or shin pads, it's not called.
