Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The string of flowers sewn together and tied at the ends to form a circle - given on special occasions to loved ones is called a:

Answer: lei

Leis are given at almost any special occasion (especially graduations) to a loved one - be it a family member or just a close friend. It is a symbol of love.
2. Hawaiian people have their own special style of dance. This is called:

Answer: Hula

The word 'hula' actually means 'dance' in Hawaiian. Some young girls and boys start their hula training at 5 and 6 years of age and continue to dance until they're old and gray. Hula is used to express stories and legends of ancient Hawaii, feelings of love and even hatred, and can basically convey any emotion, any story, any activity.
3. There are two types or styles of the dance native to Hawaii. They are:

Answer: Auana and Kahiko

Auana is a more 'modern' style of hula, somewhat of a 'white influence'. Hula Auana is accompanied by guitars, ukulele, sometimes even piano. Auana has a more 'melodic' untertone. Kahiko is an ancient style of hula, done to chanting rather than music. Untouched by outside influence, this style of dance was done only by men in ancient Hawaii (strictly forbidden to women). Hula Kahiko is accompanied by instruments such as drums and ipu, without the 'melody' that auana has.
4. There is a huge hula competition in Hilo, Hawaii. Held annually for roughly the last 35 years, this is called the:

Answer: Merrie Monarch Hula Festival

Hula schools come from as far as Japan (and a couple from California!) to participate in the Merry Monarch Hula Festival. Men and women compete for three nights. The first night covers solo performances, second night the Kahiko (ancient) and the third night is held for Auana (modern) dance. A very prestigious award to have on your shelf!

Mahalo is something you hear quite often in Hawaii. It only means one thing: Thanks!
6. In many languages, one word can mean a number of different things. There is one word in particular in Hawaii that can mean a large variety of things - like love, hello, welcome, goodbye... That word is:

Answer: Aloha

7. Hawaii's state flower is:

Answer: Hibiscus

Hibiscus flowers come in many shades - red, yellow, orange, pink and many more!
8. What is the capital of Hawaii?

Answer: Honolulu

Honolulu is the most densely populated area in the whole state. Quite the tourist attraction.
9. Filmed on location in Hawaii, Elvis starred in this movie:

Answer: Blue Hawaii

Nothing interesting about this except that now they have a drink named after it. Good drink.
10. A word describing a large party with lots of Hawaiian food and live entertainment:

Answer: Luau

Luau's are given on special occasions such as a baby's first birthday, a graduation and weddings. Many hotels offer a luau package to tourists including dinner and usually a hula show. Laulau, poi and kalua are Hawaiian foods - normally served at a luau!
