The Ups and Downs of Bereavement Quiz

Start with a six-letter word (an emotion). The next word will be one letter less and may need to be unscrambled. After you get down to one letter, I'll begin to add letters to make a new word. I would say "have fun," except for the subject of this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of six letters is a synonym of sorrow.

Answer: Misery

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, 'misery' is defined as a "state of grievous affliction, condition of external unhappiness," from Old French 'misere,' meaning "miserable situation, misfortune, distress." And from before that, the Latin word 'miseria' translates as "wretchedness."
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word describing the rulers of Qatar and Kuwait.

Answer: Emirs

The term 'emir' is of Arabic origin and translates as "lord" or "commander-in-chief." In modern usage, an emir is the equivalent of a prince. Two countries that have an emir as the official ruler are the monarchs of Qatar and Kuwait, and even all of the male members of the Saudi royal family carry the title of emir.
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to describe what the sun does every morning.

Answer: Rise

Not only does the sun rise above the horizon every morning (whether we see it, or not), the word 'rise' can be used in many similar contexts, both as a verb and as a noun. In all cases, it has a meaning of lifting up or moving in an upwards direction, or increasing.
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that is a synonym for anger or rage.

Answer: Ire

To experience 'ire' most likely means that one is openly displaying an intense form of anger. The word has its origin in the Latin term 'ira,' which, appropriately enough, means 'anger, wrath, rage, passion.'
5. Again, drop a letter and rearrange the rest to come up with the second syllable of the solfège scale.

Answer: Re

Popularized by "The Sound of Music" (1965) wherein Julie Andrews sang "Do-Re-Mi," the different notes of the solfège are generally well-known. Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do are the verbal versions of the different notes of the major scale. And it is also possible to show changes from those notes to make a full chromatic scale: Do Di Re Ri Mi Fa Fi So Si La Li Ti Do.
6. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with the letter that represents the molar gas constant in chemistry.

Answer: R

Indicated by the symbol R, the molar gas constant (or ideal gas constant) in chemistry is defined as the "constant of proportionality that relates the energy scale in physics to the temperature scale and the scale used for amount of substance" (Wikipedia). Essentially, it is the Avogadro constant multiplied by the Boltzmann constant:

R = 8.3144598(48)J.mol-1. K-1
7. Now add a letter to give a gender-neutral pronoun used in Esperanto.

Answer: Ri

Used in a similar way to 'they' in English when one's gender is unknown or unspecified, 'ri' is used in Esperanto as an alternative to 'li' (he) and 'ŝi' (she).
8. Add a letter and rearrange them to make a type of evergreen coniferous tree.

Answer: Fir

As mentioned in the clue, fir trees are evergreen coniferous trees, meaning they keep their needles on all year round. They can range in size from 10 to 80 meters tall (33-262 feet), and can be found in North and Central America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
9. Add another letter to make one of the four classical elements.

Answer: Fire

It was the Greek philosopher Empedocles, who lived in the fifth century BC, that first suggested the four classical elements as a group: earth, water, air, and fire.
10. Finally, add one last letter and rearrange them to come up with another synonym of sorrow.

Answer: Grief

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary gives one definition of grief as a "deep and poignant distress caused by or as if by bereavement." It can also refer to the cause of such suffering, or to various types of trouble or annoyance.
