Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The vanilla cream filling wasn't the original flavour of Twinkies. What was the original flavour?

Answer: banana

Twinkies were created in 1930 in Illinois by a baker who noticed that the machines for filling strawberry shortcakes were collecting dust when strawberries were unavailable. He came up with the idea of a banana cream filled snack cake. However during World War I, bananas were rationed, so he changed the filling to vanilla cream. The public loved it and the modern Twinkie was born!
2. Ketchup was originally sold as what?

Answer: medicine

Imagine ketchup as a medicine! Dr John Cook Bennet suggested that ketchup could be used as a remedy for indigestion, rheumatism, jaundice and diarrhea, and made it into a pill.

The ketchup recipe has changed significantly from its original form. It was made in the UK, the main ingredient being mushrooms, and it was brought to the US by the British colonists. Many different recipes were tried over the years, including one with anchovies, until it developed into the ketchup we know and love today.
3. Oddly, the British singer Harry Styles has four what?

Answer: nipples

Harry Edward Styles was born in 1994 in England. He auditioned for the television show 'X Factor' in 2010, and after advancing to bootcamp, was eliminated. Styles got together with four others who were also eliminated and they formed the band, One Direction. Styles was born with a condition called polythelia meaning 'accessory nipples'.
4. We all know that the Eiffel Towel is in Paris, but which city did Gustave Eiffel originally submit the plans to?

Answer: Barcelona

Gustave Eiffel submitted the plans to Barcelona but the city officials rejected the idea as they felt it was not an attractive addition to the city. Paris accepted the plans, despite their misgivings, and the Eiffel Tower was built over the course of two years for the Paris World's Fair in 1889. The Eiffel Tower has become one of the most iconic landmarks in the world.
5. In Canada, in order to enter sweepstakes what must people do?

Answer: answer a skill testing question

Under the Criminal Code of Canada, games of random chance are considered to be illegal lotteries. The skill testing question proves that the person put forth an effort to be qualified to win, thus eliminating the possibility of a game of chance. The Canadian courts have agreed that the question be a mathematical one with at least three operations, and the entrant may not receive any help (calculators, other people, etc) either.
6. Of the 50,000+ species of mushrooms, there are 70+ that can do what 'bright' activity?

Answer: glow in the dark

Yes, some mushroom species do glow in the dark. They are able to do so because of the interaction between specific molecules, a particular enzyme, and oxygen. The reason for this strange ability is to attract insects that spread the mushroom spores, thus assisting with reproduction.
7. What was unusual about the honorary mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, until 2017?

Answer: he was a cat

The cat, named Stubbs because he was a Manx (no tail), was the honorary mayor of Talkeetna for 20 years. He was a great tourist attraction and performed his duties until his death in 2017.
8. In WW2, a US naval destroyer apparently won a battle against a Japanese submarine by throwing what at them?

Answer: potatoes

In 1943, the USS O'Bannon was returning from the Solomon Islands to its home base. They noticed a Japanese submarine nearby. The ship's captain was going to ram the submarine, but feared that the ensuing crash might cause the two vessels to explode. At this point, the O'Bannon was too close to fire its weapons, so they began to throw potatoes which were being stored on deck.

The Japanese sailors had no idea what was being thrown at them and they began to panic. This allowed the O'Bannon to get far enough away to fire at the submarine and sink it.
9. What happened in Mexico City on September 19 in 1985, 2017, and 2022?

Answer: earthquakes

Strangely, in Mexico City there were earthquakes in all of those years and all on September 19. In 1985, a magnitude 8.0 quake hit the city. In 2017, a magnitude 7.1 occurred and in 2022 a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit. The chances of severe earthquakes hitting the same city on the same day in three different years, are between 0.000751% and 0.00000024% according to experts.
10. Which is the world's oldest currency that is still in use today?

Answer: the British pound

The British pound has been in continuous use since Anglo-Saxon times making it approximately 1200 years old. It has changed a great deal over the years. One of the more significant changes was in 1971 when the money became decimalized.
