Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first person to be murdered in the book?

Answer: Leonardo Vetra

Leonardo Vetra was the first person murdered. One of his eyeballs was removed in order to gain access to the Vetra lab downstairs. He had the "Illuminati" brand on his chest and was supposedly murdered for a) the antimatter or b) his philosophy on the coming together of the church and science.

This is meant to shock you, and it really shows the reader just how far this particular villian will go to get what he or she wants.
2. What was the name of the poison used to murder the Pope?

Answer: Heparin

The name of the poison was Heparin. Because the Pope never gets an autopsy, he was said to have been killed by a stroke. Heparin's symptoms are extremely similar to that of a stroke. Vittoria knew this because Heparin is used in less lethal doses on sea mammals in captivity to prevent blood clots from inactivity. (She's a marine biologist). One of the only ways to tell whether the Pope died naturally or was poisoned was to see whether his tongue was black.
3. According to the "Illuminati", what are the four mystic elements?

Answer: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water

The four mystic elements are Earth, Air, Fire, and Water according to the Illuminati. They also made four corresponding ambigrams, which were branded onto the Cardinals, at each religious point all around Rome. The Cardinals were displayed publicly and the homicides were eventually caught on tape.
4. At what University is Robert Langdon a professor?

Answer: Harvard University

Robert Langdon is a professor at Harvard. He teaches religious iconology there. Harvard is located in Cambridge, which is in Boston, Massachusetts. It is among one of the many colleges there including Boston University and Boston College.
5. The Vatican denounced the Illuminati brotherhood as 'Shaitan'. What does this term mean?

Answer: God's adversary

At first, the Illuminati brotherhood was not anti-Christian. Then they went underground and emerged extremely dark. Their power grew to such a point that the Vatican denounced them 'Shaitan'.
'Shaitan' is the Islamic term for 'adversary', specifically God's adversary. 'Shaitan' is the root for the English term 'Satan' or the devil (who happens to be God's adversary in more than one belief) Why the Vatican chose Islamic? They thought the language was dirty.
6. Who was the BBC reporter who was doing the story on the election of the new Pope?

Answer: Gunther Glick

The BBC reporter was named Gunther Glick, with his camerawoman Chinita Macri. While he was reporting on the "Pope-Watch", a mysterious man called him and told him all about the murders of the Cardinals. The two reporters were the first ones at every murder scene and were the only reporters who went underground with the Camerlengo at the ending of the book.
7. What is Vittoria wearing the first time we meet her?

Answer: khaki shorts and a white sleeveless top

We first meet Vittoria when she is stepping out of the chopper (she was coming from researching in the Balearic Sea.) She is described "Descending from the chopper in her khaki shorts and white sleeveless top, Vittoria Vetra looked nothing like the bookish physicist he expected."
8. What was the name of the folio Robert and Vittoria were looking for? (Hint: Galileo)

Answer: Diagramma

First, Robert looks at Archive Vault number 9, thinking the theme of scientists would be where to find Galileo. However, he did not count on the fact that Archive Vault number 10 was entirely Galileo. The indicator tabs on Vault 10 all carried the same keyword: IL PROCESSO GALILEANO. There he found Galileo's "Diagramma" which held the key to solving the puzzle!
9. What phobia does Robert have?

Answer: claustrophobia

Robert suffers from claustrophobia after having been trapped down in a well when he was a child. Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders, achluophobia is the fear of the dark, and algiophobia is fear of pain. It mentions several times in the book when Robert is in a closed space of himself trying to calm down, and at one point we have a flashback to when he was a child and he fell into the well.
10. What is the last thing Vittoria says in the book?

Answer: "You've never been to bed with a yoga master, have you?"

The very last thing Vittoria (or anyone) says in the book is, "You've never been to bed with a yoga instructor, have you?" She says this after several back and forth exchanges with Langdon and I think it leaves a very lasting impression of her character.
"I'm not the kind of man who could have a religious experience." This is the last thing said by Langdon.
"My fellow guards and I are curious. Those last few minutes in the helicopter...what happened up there?" This is said by Chartrand (Swiss Guard)
"I saw you leave the square last night. I followed you. I am relieved that you are still here." This was also said by Chartrand.
