Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of monster is Curucu in the motion picture "Curucu, Beast of the Amazon" (1956)?

Answer: a large bird with claws

Curucu is a very large bird-like monster with sharp and strong claws, capable of tearing a person apart. It can swim underwater. Curucu is reputed to live somewhere upstream behind a waterfall.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: The Girls of Zombie Island

"Cat Girl" (1957) followed Val Lewton's "Cat People" (1942) and preceded "The Shadow of the Cat" (1961). "Devil Girl from Mars" (1954) concerns a voluptuous space maiden in a skin tight suit on Earth to collect virile males to regenerate her race. "Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957) has little to do with the Robert Louis Stevenson story and is instead a werewolf movie.

There is a movie which went straight to video in 1995 called "Female Mercenaries on Zombie Island." There is an animated movie, also straight to video, in 1998 titled "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island." There is a 2012 YA novel by Samantha Hoffman called "Zombie Island." There does not appear to be a 1950s film called "The Girls of Zombie Island."
3. How is the monster in "The Manster" (1959) killed?

Answer: He is thrown into an active volcano.

Larry Stanford struggles with the two identities within him: his original self and the monster which grew a second head on his body. Near the end of the film, the two identities "split" and become his original self and a gorilla-monster. His good self throws his evil self into the volcano where they fight each other.
4. Which American actress played Janet Smith in "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957)?

Answer: Gloria Talbott

In "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll," the actual daughter of the physician who turned into a monster is played by Gloria Talbott. She is not, however, subject to her father's transformative curse. Her guardian, Dr. Lomas, attempts to convince her that she is a homicidal monster, responsible for several women's deaths in the neighbourhood. Talbott brought her great beauty and her experience as a "scream queen" to the role.
5. The coelacanth in "Monster on the Campus" (1958) is a fictional fish, invented by the film's screenwriter.

Answer: False

According to the fossil record, coelacanths lived 410 million years ago and were believed to have become extinct about 55 million years ago. That was the scientific consensus until 1938 when one was caught off the coast of South Africa. Scientists called it "a living fossil." The fish remains an endangered species.
6. Was "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1953) a remake or a sequel or a prequel or what?

Answer: It was part of a thematic series.

"Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948) was such a great success that it begat a series of "Abbott and Costello Meet a Monster" formula pictures. Universal-International cranked the camera to produce "Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff" (1949), which was followed by "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951), "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1953), and "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" (1955). Poor Charles Lamont, who did not really care for the subgenre, ended up directing almost all of them.
7. In "Zombies of Mora Tau" (1957), had other expeditions come seeking the diamonds sunk on board the Susan B.?

Answer: Yes

When the expedition arrives, Mrs. Peters takes them to the graveyard. There she shows them the graves of the previous salvage parties: British in 1906, Germans in 1914, British again in 1923, Portuguese in 1928, and American in 1938. She explains that they are the sixth group to seek the diamonds and that their graves have already been dug for them.
8. For what is Nathan Juran best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: directing

Naftuli Hertz "Nathan" Juran (1907-2002) was trained as an architect, became an art director in motion pictures and ended up directing for the rest of his professional life. Juran was experienced in making giant-monster-rampage movies. He directed "The Deadly Mantis" (1957), "20 Million Miles to Earth" (1957), and "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" (1958).

He also directed the classic Harryhausen motion picture "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" (1958). In addition to his work on films, Juran directed television series such as "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "Lost in Space," and "Land of the Giants."
9. Where is "The Thing From Another World" (1951) set?

Answer: in the Arctic near the North Pole

The film begins in Anchorage, Alaska, where a group of airmen are dispatched to investigate an aircraft which crashed near a North Pole research station. The motion picture was filmed, in part, in Glacier National Park in Montana, and, in part, inside an ice storage plant located in Los Angeles, California.
10. What happens to Baron Victor Frankenstein at the end of "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957)?

Answer: He is led off to the guillotine.

The cinematic frame in which "The Curse of Frankenstein" is set is an explanation of all that has happened, made to a priest by Victor in prison, while he awaits execution. He had been convicted of several murders and sentenced to death. His story is told in flashbacks. At the end of his narration, the priest does not believe him and the guards lead him away to be killed for his crimes.
