Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Middlesbrough sits close to the mouth of the River Tees. Can you tell me which two professional league clubs are the closest, geographically, to Middlesbrough?

Answer: Hartlepool and Darlington

Sunderland and Newcastle are Middlesbrough's local rivals, but the teams from Darlington and Hartlepool are much closer. Darlington is roughly 15 miles away to the West, and Hartlepool is roughly the same, heading northeast.
2. Which of the following best describes Middlesbrough's traditional home kit?

Answer: Red shirts with a white chest band

The white chest band was first introduced in 1973 by the legendary manager Jack Charlton, but the traditional red has been the predominant colour since 1899.
3. What was the capacity of the Riverside Stadium, built in 1995, when it was extended three years later?

Answer: 35,100

Like many other clubs, Middlesbrough moved out of their old stadium, Ayresome Park, back in 1995 following the Taylor Report. Although having a lovely big new stadium is very nice indeed, it still can't generate the atmosphere that the old ground could.
4. Which of the following has not been an official club sponsor with the company name emblazoned on the shirts?

Answer: Flymo

Sponsorship. Without it, many clubs would simply not survive. So clubs sell the space on the front of their shirts and the players become mobile adverts. Cup Finals become grudge matches between rival beer companies or opposing mobile phone suppliers.
5. Midlesbrough have signed some exciting and talented players since the move to the Riverside Stadium in 1995. Which of the following connects former Middlesbrough players Branco, Juninho, and Karembeu?

Answer: All 3 have World Cup Winners medals

Branco was in the Brazilian team that won the 1994 Final on penalties against Italy and scored from the spot in the shootout. Juninho was part of the 2002 Brazilian squad that won the trophy in Japan/Korea. He played in the early games but lost his place to Kleberson in the latter stages. Christian Karembeu was an important member of the French team that won the World Cup in 1998, and played in the final against Brazil.
6. Back in 1999, what did ex-player and later local radio commentator, Bernie Slaven, promise to do as part of a bet -- if Middlesbrough were to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in their up-coming league fixture?

Answer: Bare his bottom in the window of a large Middlesbrough department store

It is a local saying that, "I'll bare my backside in Binns' window" (Binns is a local department store in the town centre). Unfortunately for Bernie, he said it "on air" and, amazingly, Middlesbrough beat Manchester United 3-2. A few days later, his posterior was displayed with the scoreline written on the cheeks.
7. Middlesbrough won their first major trophy in their 128-year history when they won the 2004 Carling Cup. Which statement tells what happened in the final?

Answer: Middlesbrough beat Bolton 2-1 in Cardiff's Millenium Stadium

Bolton Wanderers were the opposition at the wonderful Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. The game was only 7 minutes old when a penalty made it 2-0 to Middlesbrough. Bolton got one goal back in the 21st minute but that was the end of the scoring and the Cup was adorned in red and white ribbons and heading back to the northeast.
8. Middlesbrough qualified to play in the UEFA Cup in 2005 and 2006, and enjoyed some memorable games and some stunning fight-backs. The quarterfinal and semi-final games in 2006 saw Middlesbrough 0-3 down in both, yet they won both games 4-3 on aggregate. Which teams were on the receiving end of these comebacks?

Answer: FC Basel and Steaua Bucharest

The 2006 UEFA Cup was a fantastic achievement for a club like Middlesbrough, and getting to the final in Eindhoven meant another great day for the fans. Sadly, Sevilla proved too good, and deservedly won the UEFA Cup.
9. The two Australian internationals who played in the UEFA Cup final side for Middlesbrough in 2006, shared the same Christian name. What was it?

Answer: Mark

The two Marks, Schwartzer and Viduka, were both long established Australian international players; despite the names which are originally German and Croatian. Other Australian international players who have also played for Middlesbrough include centre back Tony Vidmar, and midfielders Paul Okon and Luke Wilkshire.
10. The Chairman of Middlesbrough, Steve Gibson, is widely regarded as one of the best in the league. Which of these best describes him and how he runs the club?

Answer: A local self-made Millionairre, a genuine fan of the game, lets his manager manage and doesn't interfere

Without Steve Gibson, Middlesbrough would have gone bankrupt back in 1986. Since then, he has guided the club he loves to a high level and wants to go further. Thankfully, the fans are fully aware of the debt owed to him and he is much respected in the town and in English football.
