Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For many decades, Ty Cobb held the record for being the youngest player to win a batting title. Which player in 1955 broke Cobb's record?

Answer: Al Kaline

The other greats had not begun their careers yet. In 1955, the Detroit Tiger Kaline batted .340 to win the batting title. Cobb's record was set in 1907 with the Tigers when he hit .350. Al was born one day later than Cobb on December 19, therefore breaking Cobb's record by only one day of age. Kaline played for the Tigers for 22 seasons from 1953-1974.

He was 20 years old when the won that batting title.
2. Babe Ruth was the first slugger in history to reach the 50 home run season barrier in 1920. How many did he hit?

Answer: 54

It was the Babe's first year as a Yankee. In 1919 as a member of the Red Sox, he hit 29 home runs which smashed the AL record. He doubled it in 1920 with 54. In 1921, he bettered that mark with 59. Jimmie Foxx was the second player in history to hit over 50 in 1931 with the Athletics.
3. Who was the first pitcher in Major League history to throw 300 strikeouts in a season?

Answer: Rube Waddell

Waddell was the first to reach this plateau. In 1903, he surpassed the 300-barrier with the Philadelphia Athletics. Walter Johnson was the second pitching arm to do it. After striking out 313 in 1910, the Big Train then struck out 303 batters in 1912 with the Senators.
4. Which of the following pitchers led his league an amazing eight times for most wins?

Answer: Warren Spahn

Warren Spahn played 21 of his 22 seasons with the Braves of Boston and Milwaukee. He won the crowns in 1949, 1950, and 1953 before running a streak of five consecutive from 1957-1961. Warren was a Cy Young winner in 1957, the second to receive the award, and was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1973. McLain of the Tigers led his league twice, and both Burdette and Gibson led their league once.
5. Which pitching great never won 300 games in their fantastic career?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

The Los Angeles proclaimed strikeout king with the Dodgers played for only 12 seasons. He won three Cy Young awards, three Triple Crowns, and many other awards from 1963-1966, but chose to retire due to elbow problems. He won 97 games in those four seasons, and still retired with only 165 career wins. Nobody will know what could have been. Lefty Grove was the 'lesser pitcher' of the others listed with exactly 300 wins over his 17-season career with the Athletics and Red Sox.
6. In 2002, Mike Cameron joined the list of sluggers who hit four home runs in one game. Which other slugger joined that list also in 2002?

Answer: Shawn Green

The others retired before the 2002 season. Cameron played for Seattle and hit his four home runs early in the season in May. Mike hit a total of only 25 home runs in the season. Green's 42 for the Dodgers season, including his four in one game, put him in the third spot for a season total behind Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds.
7. Many baseball fans have been exposed to the Red Sox and Cubs going through more than 80 seasons without winning a World Series. Which franchise once held the record for waiting 77 years before they went to and finally won in the promised land?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

After 98 years in baseball, beginning in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers, the franchise finally won their first World Series in 1980 with the help of Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt. The franchise won the National League pennant in 1915 and 1950 before winning it all in 1980.

The World Series began play in 1903 between the American and National League. Throughout the entire 20th century, the Phillies had only reached the 100-win plateau in a season twice, and both of those moments were with manager Danny Ozark at the helm.
8. Which of the following players did not hit 500+ home runs in their career?

Answer: Jose Canseco

Ernie Banks' 512 was topped by Killebrew's 573. Palmeiro, still playing in the Majors in 2005 as an Oriole, hit over 550 in his career. Canseco began his career with the Oakland Athletics alongside with Mark McGwire. This was one of the biggest one-two home run combination punches since Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in a batting order.

After 17 seasons, Jose (claiming that he was black-balled from baseball) retired in 2001 with the Chicago White Sox with 462 four-baggers.
9. Which of the following sluggers set a season record for the most home runs hit in their rookie season?

Answer: Mark McGwire

McGwire broke the previous record of 38 by a rookie, when he hit 49 in 1987 with the Athletics of Oakland. Canseco hit 33 in his rookie season, helping him to win the Rookie of the Year award in 1986. Williams hit 31 and Willie Mays hit 20 in their rookie seasons. McGwire retired with 583 home runs after the 2001 season in only 16 seasons, and only three short of the great Frank Robinson.
10. Which of the following set a speedster record for stealing over 100 bases in his rookie season?

Answer: Vince Coleman

None of the others listed ever stole more than 20 bases in a season during their entire career. Vince Coleman with the St. Louis Cardinals stole 110 in his rookie season in 1985. Vince stole 107 and 109 the following seasons.
