Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first All Star game was played at Comiskey Park in 1933. The American League won the game 4-2. Who was the winning pitcher and who picked up the save for the A.L.?

Answer: Lefty Gomez (win) Lefty Grove (save)

Gomez was the starting pitcher for the American League and grabbed the win thanks to a 2 run homer by 38 year old Babe Ruth in the bottom of the third, that put the A.L. in front 3-0 (and the A.L. stayed in front, winning the game 4-2). Grove pitched three shutout innings to finish the game and earn the save.
2. Which of these Hall of Fame stars had a .200 batting average in his only World Series appearance?

Answer: Ted Williams

The great Ted Williams managed only 5 singles in 25 at bats for the Red Sox against the St Louis Cardinals, in the 1946 World Series, after hitting .342 with 38 homers and 123 runs batted in during the regular season.
3. After 8 plus seasons with the New York Yankees, this player finished his career with his hometown team the Detroit Tigers. Who is this former Rookie of the Year who was born in Detroit, Michigan?

Answer: Tom Tresh

Tresh was born in Detroit on September 20, 1938. He played college baseball at Central Michigan University in Mt Pleasant, Michigan. He made his major league debut September 3, 1961 and played with the Yankees until he was traded to the Tigers in 1969. He retired after one season with the Tigers.
4. Where was the great Babe Ruth born?

Answer: Baltimore, Maryland

George Herman "Babe" Ruth was born February 6, 1896.
5. This slugger, known more for his home run prowess, led the National League in stolen bases for four consecutive seasons (1956 to 1959). Who is this right handed hitter?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays hit 660 homers in his career but was an all around great player.
His 40 stolen bases in 1956, 38 in 1957, 31 in 1958 and 27 in 1959 were league bests.
6. In 1931 these teammates tied for the American League lead each hitting 46 homers. Who are these two sluggers?

Answer: Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig

Unfortunately Ruth and Gehrig were unable to break the tie in the post season as they finished 2nd to the Philadelphia Athletics in the A.L. pennant race.
7. Denny McLain won back to back Cy Young awards in 1968 and 1969 while pitching for the Detroit Tigers. He shared the award in 1969 with a Baltimore Oriole pitcher. What Oriole starting pitcher tied McLain for the award?

Answer: Mike Cuellar

Denny McLain never reached the success of his previous seasons after 1969. He was the last pitcher to have a 30 win season (31 in 1968) and it is likely no other pitcher will ever match that feat in the foreseeable future.
8. On April 8, 1974, Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run to break Babe Ruth's record for career home runs. Al Downing of the Los Angeles Dodgers gave up the record breaking homer. Both players wore the same uniform number. What number did they wear?

Answer: 44

Other well known players who wore number 44 were Reggie Jackson, Willie McCovey,Early Wynn, Darryl Strawberry, Jim Bouton and John Kruk.
9. What left-handed slugger hit a monster 532 foot home run in the 1971 All-Star game held at Tiger Stadium?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Jackson's homer was hit off Pittsburgh pitcher Dock Ellis. Had the ball not hit a transformer at the top of the stadium it might still be traveling.
10. Who was the first player to register his 3000th hit as a designated hitter?

Answer: Al Kaline

Kaline spent the final season of his outstanding career (1974), as the designated hitter. He did not play any games in right field where he previously won 10 Gold Glove awards.
