Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Arizona Diamondbacks were a MLB expansion team in 1998. In 2001, in only their fourth year of existence, they won the World Series, thanks largely to the efforts of which pitching duo?

Answer: Randy Johnson & Curt Schilling

The D-Backs were up against a New York Yankees team who were attempting to win their fourth consecutive World Series crown. All seven games were won by the home team, with Arizona scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win game seven 3-2. Johnson and Schilling were named co-MVPs of the series - both won two games, and their combined ERA was 1.40.
2. Which tennis player from Globe, Arizona, won four consecutive US Championships in the 1930s, as well as the 1936 Wimbledon crown?

Answer: Helen Jacobs

Jacobs was born in Globe, Gila County, in 1908. She won her first US Championship (the forerunner of the US Open) in 1932, beating Carolin Babcock in the final. The following year, she beat her great rival, Helen Wills, in the final to retain her crown. Sarah Palfrey would be her victim in the finals of both 1934 and 1935.

She finally got her hands on the Wimbledon crown in 1936, beating Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling in the final.
3. Arizona's climate makes it ideal for golf, especially in the winter. The Phoenix Open is a part of the PGA tour which is traditionally held on Superbowl weekend in February. Which course has hosted this event each year since 1987?

Answer: TPC of Scottsdale

The Phoenix Open was held intermittently between 1932 and 1940 and annually since 1944. Famous winners of the event include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Phil MIckelson. TPC of Scottsdale was designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and opened in 1986.
4. The Phoenix Suns were an expansion team in the National Basketball Association in 1968. They reached the NBA finals twice in the 20th century, losing to which two teams?

Answer: Boston Celtics & Chicago Bulls

The Suns made their first run to the finals in 1976. Victories over Seattle and Golden State saw them through to a meeting with the Boston Celtics. The teams shared the first four games in the best-of-seven series before Boston pulled clear to win 4-2.

In 1993, the L.A. Lakers, San Antonio and Seattle were despatched as the Suns made it to their second finals. Standing in their way were the Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls, and the Suns went down in six games.
5. Michael Carbajal, from Phoenix, was a world champion boxer in which weight divison?

Answer: Light Flyweight

Carbajal was born in Phoenix in 1967. He won a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul before turing professional. He won his first world title in 1990, beating Muangchai Kittikasem to win the IBF light flyweight crown. He added the WBC version in 1993 with a victory over Humberto Gonzalez. The WBO version was added to his collection with a win against Josue Camacho.
6. Kerri Strug, from Tucson, was an Olympic gold-medallist in which sport?

Answer: Gymnastics

Strug was born in Tucson in 1977. She was part of the US team which won bronze at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. In 1996, at Atlanta, she won gold in the team event. She clinched the gold medal for her team with her final vault, which she performed with a damaged ankle.
7. The Arizona Cardinals made it to their first NFL Superbowl in February, 2009, behind the arm of which veteran quarterback?

Answer: Kurt Warner

Warner had previously led the St Louis Rams to victory in Superbowl XXXIV. He was 37 years old when he helped the Cardinals reach Superbowl XLIII. Unfortunately for the men from Phoenix, they came up just short in the big game, going down 27-23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
8. The Arizona Wildcats men's basketball team have been consistent national championship contenders in recent years, taking part in the NCAA Championships in 25 consecutive years between 1985 and 2009. Their only national title during this streak came in 1997, when they defeated which university in the championship game?

Answer: Kentucky

The University of Arizona Wildcats are based in Tucson and are members of the Pac-12 Conference. They didn't have much of a reputation on the basketball court until Lute Olsen was hired as head coach in 1983. During his 24 seasons in charge, he led the Wildcats to 11 conference crowns, and made the NCAA tournament every year bar his debut one.

In 1997, the Wildcats met the defending champions Kentucky in the championship game in Indianapolis, and won 84-79 in overtime.
9. NHL ice hockey came to sunny Arizona in 1996, when which Canadian team moved south and became the Phoenix Coyotes?

Answer: Winnipeg Jets

The Jets were playing in the smallest market, and smallest arena, in the NHL when the owners decded to move to warmer climes in 1996. The newly-named Coyotes were competitive in their first few years in Phoenix, regularly reaching the play-offs, before decline set in in the early years of the 21st century. The arrival of coach Dave Tippett in 2009 saw a revival of the team's fortunes.
Winnipeg fans would have to wait until 2011 before they could watch NHL hockey again, when the Atlanta Thrashers moved north to become the second incarnation of the Jets.
10. If you attened a Phoenix Mercury game, which sport would you be watching?

Answer: Basketball

The Phoenix Mercury are a member of the Women's National Basketball Association. The Mercury are one of the original eight franchises who began WNBA play in 1997. In 2007, under head coach Paul Westhead, they won their first league championship, beating Detroit Shock in the finals.

In 2009, with coach Corey Gaines at the helm, they won a second title, Indiana Fever being their victims in the finals.
