Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The league was the brain child of two men, Gary Davidson and Dennis Murphy, who had a habit of starting rebel sports leagues. They would both go on to found the World Football League in 1974 but before that they would start another league that was in operation when they started the WHA. What was that league?

Answer: American Basketball Association (ABA)

Murphy and Davidson were rebels themselves and are probably the only people to start 3 professional sports leagues to challenge the established league. Sadly none of them lasted 10 years but they all, even the train wreck known as the WFL had a lasting impact on the NFL. One of the incorrect answers, WTT, Dennis Murphy was one of it's founders but Davidson was not.
2. The WHA planned for a 12 team league to start. Not only did the league want teams in cities like L.A. or New York, they also wanted teams in cities with no professional hockey teams. One of those cities was Miami where a franchise was to be named the Screaming Eagles, however, they couldn't find a suitable arena and a proposed arena/office complex was planned but it ran into zoning problems. Unfortunately, Miami couldn't host a team with no arena so the team was sold and moved and became known as what team?

Answer: Philadelphia Blazers

The Blazers came to be and began play at the Philadelphia Convention center with their brightly colored orange and yellow uniforms. Unfortunately one bad omen after another plagued the team and they only spent one year in Philadelphia before being sold and moving to Vancouver.
3. Screaming Eagles - this franchise became the first to lure an established NHL player to the rebel league when they signed goaltender and future hall of famer Bernie Parent. From which team was Bernie signed away from?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

Bernie began his career in Boston but was drafted by the Flyers in the 1967 expansion draft. He was then traded to the Maple Leafs and when his contract expired he signed on with the rebel league. When the Blazers moved to Vancouver, Bernie decided to return to the NHL where the Leafs traded his rights to the Flyers. All Bernie did was lead them to the Stanley Cup in 1974.
4. One of the charter teams was the New York Raiders. The Raiders had hoped to play in the new Long Island Arena but the deal fell through when the Islanders were formed forcing the Raiders to play in Madison Square Garden under an impossible lease. Plagued by poor attendance, the team decided to restructure and came back at the start of the 2nd season as the New York Golden Blades but they were worse than the Raiders and in mid season picked up, moved south, and became what?

Answer: Jersey Knights

The Golden Blades moved to Cherry Hill, NJ and became the Jersey Knights but they were doomed from the start. They were in the same market as the Philadelphia Flyers who were into the season that led them to their first Stanley Cup, the Cherry Hill Arena was unfit for a major league franchise, and they got no media coverage as everything was still broadcast out of NYC.

They did have cool uniforms though. After the 1973-74 season the Knights moved west to warmer weather in San Diego and became the Mariners.
5. The WHA finals the first season, 1972-73, was between the New England Whalers and the Winnipeg Jets for the AVCO Cup. The Whalers defeated the Jets 4-1 in the series but something was strange about the post championship celebration. What was it?

Answer: They Had No Trophy To Skate Around

The AVCO World Trophy was not only the first professional sports trophy to bear a corporate name, it hadn't been completed in time to be skated around by the champion Whalers so they had to substitute the Eastern Division trophy instead.
6. The biggest coup by the WHA was signing legend Bobby Hull away from the NHL. But he wasn't the only star to go to the new league. Maurice Richard coached, albeit briefly, the Quebec Nordiques, Jacques Plant played a few games in goal for the Edmonton Oilers, Derek Sanderson played all of 8 games for the Blazers even though he signed what was then the biggest sports contract in history, Gerry Cheevers played for the Crusaders in Cleveland, and this legend who signed on to play with his sons in Houston. Who was this legend?

Answer: Gordie Howe

Gordie Howe came out of retirement to play along side of his sons Mark and Marty in Houston for the Aeros. Gordie, who was 44 at the time he started in the WHA, played like he was in his prime scoring 99, 100, & 102 points in 3 straight seasons with the Aeros and had a 96 point season with the Whalers in 1977-78.
7. Several young players got their start in the WHA then went on to distinguished careers in the NHL. Players like Mike Gartner, Mark Messier, Mike Liut, Mark Howe, Rod Langway among others became NHL all stars and even a few hall of famers. But no player made as big an impact on the NHL than Wayne Gretzky who went on to set records that are still being chased today in the NHL in a career where he played for the Oilers, Kings, Blues, and Rangers. But what team gave Gretzky his first major league experience?

Answer: Indianapolis Racers

The Racers signed the then 17 year old Gretzky, something that was a no-no in the NHL as there was an unwritten rule not to sign players under 20(although Marty Howe was 18 and Mark was 17 when they signed in 1972). After 8 games with the Racers, Gretzky and 2 other players were sold to the Edmonton Oilers and the rest is history.
8. Several teams moved or folded as the league progressed through the 1970s. Some in mid season. One was mentioned in question 4. Another was the LA Sharks who moved to Detroit to become the Michigan Stags but in mid season moved to Baltimore to become the Blades. But the weirdest move came in the 1975-76 season when the expansion Denver Spurs were forced to move after 34 games to what city?

Answer: Ottawa

The Denver Spurs were originally in the Western Hockey League and were somewhat successful. Owner Ivan Mellunix hoped to get an NHL franchise and was nearly granted one when the California Seals began to have financial troubles but the deal fell through.

The WHA granted Denver a franchise but it was beset by fan apathy because they didn't consider the WHA a major league as well as talks of the Kansas City Scouts potential move to Denver(which they did). The Spurs moved to Ottawa, Ontario and became the Civics but someone forgot to tell the players.

The players didn't find out about the move until they were set to play the Stingers in Cincinnati when the name Civics was on the scoreboard and the Canadian national anthem was played. Ironically, the Civics were a success playing to sellout crowds but the proposed sale to a group in Ottawa fell through and the team folded after just 2 weeks making the Spurs/Civics the first WHA team to fail to complete a full season.
9. The Los Angeles Sharks were a charter member of the league but they were only around for two seasons before moving to Michigan and became the Stags. One player for the Sharks was only the second black player to play in a major professional hockey league. Who was this player?

Answer: Alton White

Alton White was the 2nd black player after Willie O'Ree to play in a major professional hockey league. The 3 incorrect answers were all black players with Mike Marson becoming the 3rd black player and 2nd in the NHL when he played for the Washington Capitals.
10. The final season for the WHA was the 1978-79 season. Starting in 1979-80 four teams would join the NHL. But before that, there was a final AVCO Cup finals to be played. The winner were the Winnipeg Jets. Who did the Jets defeat to take home the last AVCO Cup.

Answer: Edmonton Oilers

The Birmingham Bulls were the only team to fail to make the playoffs in that final season. The Jets won 3 AVCO Cups including this final one. These finals were also Wayne Gretzky's first finals as a player. He wouldn't reach another final until the 1982-83 Stanley Cup Finals and he would win his first Stanley Cup a season later.
