Terry, born on January 25th, 1944 in Vero Beach, Florida played Dr. Christian Shephard in this episode. He first began playing the role in the season one episode, "Walkabout." For the first five seasons, he appeared in seventeen episodes. On the show, we found out Dr. Christian Shephard went into surgery, one day, drunk and his son, Jack, reported him to the medical board.

As a result of this, Dr. Christian Shephard lost his license to practice medicine and this caused him to have a rocky relationship with his son. Terry has guest starred on the TV shows, "Las Vegas", "24", and "ER."

Jack suffered a devastating blow when he operated on a woman, in a flashback at the beginning of the episode, and she began to flat line. Jack tried everything he could to revive her but it looked hopeless. Jack's father, Dr. Christian Shephard, was right by his side and told him he had to call in the death. Jack accepted that his patient was dead and gone.

There was a board meeting, in a flashback, to discuss what had happened and Dr. Christian Shephard made a false statement and tried to implicate Jack in wrongfully having the woman declared dead. It was revealed, at the meeting, that the woman was pregnant and the autopsy revealed it. Jack stood up and said that his father was drunk, during the surgery, and this set the chain of events in motion that led to the patient's death.

In the opening scene, at the caves, Hurley was talking about how one of the passengers, Ethan Rom, was not in the passenger manifest. Jack asked Michael where Ethan was and Michael responded that Ethan went into the jungle to get wood to start a fire. We soon learned that Ethan had a wife and she died, while she was in childbirth.

They return and enlist the help of Kate and Boone to look for Charlie and Claire. They eventually split up, to cover more ground, and Jack and Kate went together and Boone went with Locke to look for Charlie and Claire.

Jack and Kate were getting closer, to Charlie, and they followed Ethan's path to find him. Jack and Kate came upon Charlie and, when they did, they noticed that he was hanging from a tree branch. Jack and Kate cut Charlie down, from the tree, and Jack performs CPR on him. Kate tells Jack, during the CPR, to not bother since Charlie appeared dead but Jack did not give up. Charlie came to and he survived.

While Jack and Kate looked, for Charlie and Claire, they got separated and Jack slid down an embankment. This was right after he heard some screaming and he thought it was Claire so he rushed to get to her and that was when he took his fall. When he gets to the bottom of the embankment, he sees Ethan and Ethan warns him that, if he continues to follow him, he will kill either him or Claire. Jack and Ethan fight and Ethan knocked Jack out and Kate came to Jack's aid.
