Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Speedway Boulevard was once labeled by Life Magazine as the ugliest street in America. It was named Speedway when racing enthusiasts in the '20s and '30s used the dirt road to test their skills. What Arizona city are you traveling through?

Answer: Tucson

Tucsonans still test their skills on Speedway, but the road is paved and four to six lanes wide now and traverses the city from east to west. And that ugly label came from all the billboards which have been cleaned up a little.
2. You are going south on State Highway 90, on your way to historic Fort Huachuca when you see a sign advertising Arizona's newest State Park. What park should you stop and visit?

Answer: Kartchner Caverns

Kartchner Caverns were discovered by spelunkers Randy Tufts and Gary Tenen in 1974, but were a well kept secret for 14 years. After much preparation they were finally opened to the public in 1999 and are well worth the short drive from Tucson. You might want to call for reservations.
3. You are on the border with Mexico, in a town with a Spanish name that means walnuts in English. When the post office opened here in 1882, the town was called Isaacson after one of its early settlers. Later the townspeople renamed it what?

Answer: Nogales

There were two walnut trees straddling the international border at that time, hence the name, Nogales or walnuts. Still a gateway to Mexico, it is about a one hour drive from Tucson.
4. Along Interstate 19 between Tucson and Nogales you can find an artist colony and a rebuilt presidio. It was from here that Captain Juan Batista de Anza launched his expedition to find an overland route to California. Where are you now?

Answer: Tubac

The Tubac Presidio State Park and the adjacent art galleries are a neat diversion for the day. Tubac was also where Arizona's first newspaper the "Weekly Arizonan" was first published.
5. On the south side of Tucson you come upon a beautiful cathedral on the west side of Interstate 10. It is referred to as the "White Dove of the Desert" and is over 200 years old. What historic site will you visit now?

Answer: Mission San Xavier

Mission San Xavier del Bac was begun in 1783 and took 14 years to complete. Its bright white twin towers are visible from miles away but one of them has never been completed. Legend has it that the Spanish taxed any completed building, so the Franciscans left the cap off of one tower to avoid the tax!
6. North of Tucson you go up State Highway 77 and visit Biosphere Two. You travel a few more miles northeast on the road to a small town at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains. What town is this?

Answer: Oracle

Oracle is a good place to escape Tucson's heat in the summer. It was also home to the Mountain View Hotel at the turn of the century, which was one of the first businesses to be owned and operated by an African-American, "Curley Bill" Neal.
7. You are headed north on State Highway 79 and you pass through this historic town. On your right is the State Prison and on the left is the main part of town which happens to be the Pinal County seat. The original courthouse, built in 1891 is still used to this day. Where are you?

Answer: Florence

Florence is kind of remote which makes it an ideal choice for the prison. If you need to check the time, don't use the courthouse clock. It seems that they never installed the working parts of the clock and it permanently reads 9 o'clock.
8. You stop at the Turf Paradise and bet on the ponies. Then you play 18 holes of golf at the Thunderbird Country Club before catching your flight at Sky Harbor. Where are you now?

Answer: Phoenix

If you play golf, welcome to Mecca! Phoenix has many top quality golf courses and with the ideal weather, they are open year round.
9. Your flight from Sky Harbor Airport lands at Pulliam Field. You rent a car and head east on Interstate 40. In what city did you land?

Answer: Flagstaff

Flagstaff is a beautiful town and is home to the Lowell Observatory where Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930.
10. Heading east on I-40 at milepost 233 you see signs for a natural wonder that you really shouldn't miss. What is it?

Answer: Meteor Crater

Best estimates indicate that a huge meteor struck here about 20,000 years ago, creating a hole nearly 600 feet deep and almost a mile in diameter. It is quite impressive. Apollo astronauts trained there in the '60s prior to the moon missions.
11. You stop in this town along I-40 and get a bite to eat. There is a billboard that quotes the lyrics from an Eagles song near the highway. Where are you?

Answer: Winslow

Too easy but once I was actually "standin' on the corner in Winslow Arizona, such a fine sight to see". The girl in the flat-bed Ford never came along but...well...ya' had to be there!
12. You are going to head south off of I-40 and onto State Highway 77. You turn right at this town which was the sight of a legendary shootout in 1887. This town is located near the junction of Rio Puerco and the Little Colorado River. Where are you?

Answer: Holbrook

Holbrook was the area where the Pleasant Valley War happened in September 1887. Commodore Perry Owens, the sheriff of Apache County took care of business, killing three outlaws in one day.
13. You stop at the adjoining towns of Pinetop and Lakeside to take in the scenery. What Indian reservation are you near?

Answer: Fort Apache

Fort Apache is being restored and is worth a visit. Geronimo was held there briefly.
14. You travel down State Highway 60 into this mining town at the base of the Pinal Mountains. The oldest mine here was called the Old Dominion and Rose Mofford, former Governor of Arizona is a native of this town. Where are you now?

Answer: Globe

Similar to Bisbee, the town is built into the sides of the nearby mountains.
15. You've made it back to Tucson and you want to visit an old baseball venue. Now renamed Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium (previously called Tucson Electric Park) what two teams used to call this venue home each spring?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks / Chicago White Sox

The Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium was formerly known as Tucson Electric Park and was home to the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago White Sox.
It has not been the spring training home of the White Sox since 2008 (they play in Glendale now), nor the Diamondbacks since 2010 (they are in Scottsdale).
