Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dungeons and Dragons is considered the progenitor of these.

Answer: role-playing games

The role-playing game industry generally gives credit to D and D for its birth.
2. These two were the co-creators of the original Dungeons and Dragons game.

Answer: Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson

Both Dave and Gary were still active role-players until their deaths in 2009 and 2008 respectively. Gary had his own game system and Dave was an extra in the Dungeons and Dragons movie.
3. What did 'TSR' initially stand for?

Answer: Tactical Studies Rules

The company was initially a producer of strategic war games, hence the 'tactical studies'.
4. The figurines often used in conjunction with the game are now largely made of plastic or pewter. Pewter figurines replaced what other type?

Answer: lead

Lead, as it can be poisonous, was replaced. I hope I didn't handle too many of those.
5. Which of the following was actually one of the three booklets included in the original Dungeons and Dragons game (the white box set)?

Answer: Men and Magic

I think a map and some reference sheets were included along with the three booklets, as well as a set of dice. Mine is in poor shape and I have only the booklets. My apologies for an early misprint in this question if you happened across it.
6. Prior to the production of 'Advanced Dungeons and Dragons' there were advanced rules published as a blue softbound book. The wizard on the illustration looked into a crystal ball which pictured the characters on the basic game rules book illustration. According to the blue book's cover, these were the _________ rules.

Answer: expert

While arguably both optional and additional, the word 'expert' was used on the cover.
7. Which of these official D and D worlds is the oldest?

Answer: Greyhawk

Greyhawk, particularly Blackmoor, was Arneson's work. Such well known characters as Mordenkainen were created by Gygax for the world.
8. The original 'Deities and Demigods' book contained two sections that turned out to be problematic with respect to copyright and that were omitted from the third edition onwards. Which of the following was one of the two removed sections?

Answer: Cthulhu

The other removed section was the Melnibonean section. My copy is post Cthulhu, unfortunately. If you have one of the originals, hang on to it. My guess is that its value will only increase.
9. Patricia Pulling started an organization which opposed Dungeons and Dragons. What was it called?

Answer: BADD (Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons)

Patricia Pulling started BADD after the death of her son. She blamed the game for his suicide though there was no apparent reason to. She tried to sue the school where her son played the game and the case was thrown out of court. A role-playing game advocate named Michael Stackpole has since shown the suicide rate among role-players to be lower than the national average.
10. Jack Chick has been another producer of misinformation regarding role-playing games. What was the name of his infamous cartoon tract warning people of the dangers of role-playing?

Answer: Dark Dungeons

I hate to think how many people were introduced to the role-playing game via this publication. It shows the game as a potential link to the occult.
