Frank Baum Trivia Questions

1. What was the exact title of the book?

From Quiz
The Story Behind the Wizard of Oz

Answer: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz"

Baum's manuscript was originally called "The City of Oz". The publishers rejected a second proposed title, "The Emerald City", citing an old belief that any book with the name of a gem in the title was bad luck. The other incorrect answers were proposed titles as well. Ultimately, the book was published as "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". The word "wonderful" was dropped for the first stage production in 1908. Baum wrote 55 books in all, most of them for children, and 14 were set in Oz. His place names and character names are among the most expressive in literature, including: Mr. and Mrs. Yoop, Kwytoffle the Magician, the Woggle-Bug, King Dox of Foxville, Rinkitink, Woot, and Queen Zixi of Ix.

2. How did the Nome King plan on raiding Oz?

From Quiz "The Emerald City of Oz"

Answer: By digging a tunnel

The Nome King was furious that his Magic Belt had been taken from him, but he had no safe way of reaching the Emerald City to take it back, since the deadly desert was impossible to cross. So the nomes devised a plan to dig UNDER the deadly desert to reach Oz. The nomes were strong, hard-working creatures and digging came naturally to them. Despite this, it took them a long time to dig such a long tunnel.

The Rainbow's Daughter, Polychrome, got what she asked for as well: dewdrops and mist-cakes. The next morning, the king had left them the same food they'd gotten the night before. They took some of it with them for the trip ahead.

4. Where was Dorothy visiting in the beginning of the story?

From Quiz "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz"

Answer: San Francisco

The Good Witch of the North gave the Wicked Witch's silver slippers to Dorothy, adding that they carried a special charm. The Good Witch also gave her a protective kiss on the head for her travels. The woman in turn made a deal with the Witch of the East to help keep the girl. The Witch put a spell on the Tinsman's axe that caused him to cut off his own leg. The Tinsman had a new leg made of tin and was soon back to work. Eventually all his limbs and head were cut off by the axe. He had all these parts replaced by the same man who did his leg.
